Behold the most powerful M car ever made, the M5 CS is an eye watering £140k new, but promises to be the most dynamic M Saloon ever. Sitting at 635BHP and 750nm, the 0-60 is even lower than the competition at 3.0, which as you’ll see is a conservative estimate (oh and 0-200 is just 10.4 seconds.)
It’s the latest limited edition M5 in a long history of limited M5’s in the past. When we did the history of the M5, you’ll recall it’s predecessor the M535i. Back then racing was all the rage in South Africa, so BMW SA with the help of #BMWM and AC Schnitzer made a Motorsport Limited Edition 530 MLE, with thinner lighter panels, unique wheels and design, all years before the M1! You could call it the first true M car.
E34 saw an interesting one too. With an edition made by an F1 driver called the Winkelhock edition. He stripped the weight with a smaller fuel tank, stripped sound insulation, lighter battery and less luxury items inside, it also had wider rear tyres and recaros inside! Some similar thinking to our car today. E60 saw a one off M5 CSL that was never sold. 110 pounds lighter with a carbon roof, more power at 580BHP from a bigger 5.5 engine, and a Nurburgring lap of 7.50!
More recent times saw the M5 30 Jahre edition: the then most powerful bmw, with 600BHP, only 300 made. But apart from some unique design touches, that was it!
Our Frozen Deep Green metallic car bring parts from all of the past cars into one mega M5. It’s 70KG lighter thanks to use of Carbon with an all new bonnet made of CFRP, and has air vents with exposed carbon fibre. Carbon front splitter and mirror caps come from the #BMW M8, and the rear spoiler and diffuser are also carbon. The intake silencer and engine cover are also carbon. We have a lot of sound insulation and other elements removed so all of this contributes to a reduction of 70kg vs the standard car.
The M Carbon ceramic brakes are 23kg lighter than the M Compound brakes, and are in a unique red finish. The CS rides as standard on Pirelli P Zero Corsa track tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear.
The suspension is shared with the new Competition, meaning new dampers from the M8, but retuned and honed to account for the lighter car. The bearing springs at the front and rear axle are retuned and damper control refined for the lower weight and the tyres’ increased performance.
And finally, we have bespoke engine mounts with a spring rating of 900N/mm, giving us rigidity and rapid engine response.
The coolest bit is the design, with the motorsport inspired yellow lights which activate in either low or high beam, or when unlocking the car. Gold Bronze details are everywhere from the grille, the side badges, the boot lid and as an optional finish on the unique wheels. Inside is a real highlight too, it only seats four, with 4 individual bucket seats. Detailed in mugello red and the Nurburgring logo on the headrest, there are loads of details which I’ll share with you in the video!
But it’s still a crazy price, so can it ever hope to justify it? Today we explore:

It’s very interesting isn’t it, when the F90 first launched it received praise but really the E63 S was acknowledged as the superior driver’s car. It seems like the launch of the M5 Competition put the two rivals on equal footing which makes sense as the E63 S is a step up from the standard E63 and the suspension changes to the competition gave it the edge and excitement M5 fans expected. Now with the CS I feel that BMW has truly put the matter of who makes the best super saloon to bed. They invented this class of car with the original M5 and the used the current CS to remind us all of that 🤌🏾🔥
Well said, have had 3 M3's including the CSL and two M5'S then had a C63 the last normally aspirated version. Also had an E55 that was a dog. Marc has closed the handling gap over the years BMW jus widened it again somewhat !!!!!
Tbh I'm just very disappointed in AMG. They didnt carry on innovating their cars like M. the new e63s and c63s were extremely lazy efforts and don't compare to M3s and m5s
@@harrisr1018 I see your point, but I actually think those cars were quite innovative for Merc and AMG as each of them debuted new technology. The C63 was one of their first regular series cars to get the 4.0 turbo V8 and the E63 debuted their 4matic plus all wheel drive. They have stagnated a little over their product lifecycles but they’re cracking cars all things considered. It’s all the other cars that have followed since that I have an issue with, they’re all good but they’re pretty much just rebodied variants of the E63.

BMW did not invent this class of car, another European brand was the pioneer.
The BMW M5 CS feels more like an EV because the Torque range extends from 1800rpm - 6000rpm. Basically doesn't matter what gear you're in, you'll always feel a kick and the turbo lag is pracrically negligible

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a great hybrid M5. Consider what Porsche did with the 919 Hybrid, for example, or the Koenigsegg Gemera.

While our m5 comp will most likely to be the last ICE full size sedan for awhile, seriously, the F90 platform imho truly is one of the best "fast-drivers" sedan's on the market right now. They check off all the right boxes hands down. Can't imagine how good the CS is being that the Comp is even more than I need. Great review, hear your passion about it which is spot on!
This car is a work of art. Truly special inside and out. If I had the money I would buy it without even thinking twice. Nevermind the price, it will hold its value anyways so no harm done to the wallet 🙂

Such an absolutely amazing piece of engineering! Can‘t even imagine how impressive that thing feels to drive, as I‘ve only got a 540i G30 and that already feels pretty fast to me.
You and Joe Achilles are the 2 best reviewers on CZcams, you tell it straight and give honest comments. I have an M5 competition and would love to see how it compared in a drag race against the CS, especially as Joe and Matt from Carwow got sub 3sec in the latest competition.

I had e39 m5 20 years ago, it was and is still my favorite car that i've own. I replaced it with a e63 m6 and it just average. Even the 997 turbo that replace the M6 is not as fun as the e39.

The only thing Mercedes’ got on bmw is sound of there v8’s sound amazing and they have the best ambient lighting but other than that bmw is a better car brand overall
M5 CS is perfect....my only tweak would be 2 WD only to save more weight....but love the 2 WD option...
3 years and 50k miles on my e63s. It is fantastic at doing everything and a car I struggle to replace. The only car I would happily replace it with is the M5 CS - no other M car has ‘done’ it for me before. But this just looks like a total weapon. Pitty they are absolutely eye watering in price if you are lucky enough to find one for sale! And being that exclusive and pricey means owners won’t want to put mileage on them.. which then begs the question of what’s the point. An M5 isn’t no weekend toy.

@@chriskarsseboom2200 it’s a W213. It’s still current, I have no idea what you’re talking about. The facelift W213 is still the current competitor to the F90 M5 LCI and RS6 - both cars were revised after the W213. The E63s will likely it’s totally new replacement first and the others will follow.

The yellow DRL lights is a nice touch and kind of a throwback to Chris Bangle's angel eyes era.

I'm still amazed at this dude's animations. I'm so confused, are the cars actually there? Or it just computer effects? You spoke about many cars in this videos and they all appeared in front of us
great review as usual... I love the performance figures of the m5 but to me, not only is it too big, it lacks in styling where the new m3 doesn't, like in the hips, etc. this just seems a little too bland once you get past the front (which may appeal to some as a non showy sleeper 5 series).
As a South African, very proud to see a ******GP license plate which in itself is a brand.

Absolutely fantastic review and a fantastic vehicle but the price is absurdddd!!! But I completely disagree as I bought me a standard m5 ( not even the comp ) and tuned it for 5k with down pipes, ecu tune, lowered suspension and upgraded radiator and I can absolutely promise you that mine feels as special if not better with its incredible soundtrack. I’m All in for only 91k usd, oh and that includes ceramic coating. Not to mention how much faster mine is now compared to the CS.

If those red calipers were bright orange with tiny blue bmw logos on them with orange highlights and stitching in the interior and the all exterior trim in bronze metallic was actually the regular gray matte metallic and only the wheels were that gold colour this would be the perfect car. 👌🏾
