How to advocate for captive wildlife | Tyler-Jane Robins | TEDxTufts

  • TJ discusses her internship at Fauna Foundation, the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Canada, where she witnessed the lasting impact of captivity and abuse on former pet, performer, and research chimps. She connects the experiences of the Fauna chimps to those of captive wildlife in general who are frequently commodified - and mistreated - for the sake of human entertainment, and she stresses the importance of engaging responsibly with wildlife in-person and online. TJ Robins (she/her/hers) is a Tufts senior double-
    majoring in biology and anthropology. Next year, she’ll be attending the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine
    where she plans on studying zoological/conservation
    medicine. TJ is really excited to discuss her experience
    interning at a chimpanzee sanctuary where she was able
    to care for and study chimps retired from cross-fostering research, biomedical research, and zoos. In working with the chimps, TJ became increasingly aware of the ethical problems associated with keeping and/or interacting with captive primates and captive animals in general. She’s inspired to give a TEDx talk on the ethics of “captive wild animal encounters” to spread awareness about the issue. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      That way we can eradicate them faster? As sad as it is, for many species, captivity is the best chance at avoiding extinction.

    • @SaikolaM
      @SaikolaM Před 4 lety +4

      Rpicquendar Tyui the problem is that animals bred in captivity can never possess the same “quality” as wild animals. Not only do they lack the complex behaviors that help them survive in the wild, by caring mainly about quantity, the process of natural selection is made impossible. This results in animals that are in many ways less capable of surviving in the wild, sometimes crippled versions of their wild ancestors that had to survive on their own. They can cause what is called genetic pollution. We can never breed animals for nature, we can only breed them for our ego.

    • @romeomargot-picquendar1281
      @romeomargot-picquendar1281 Před 4 lety +1

      @@SaikolaM Yes I mostly agree with your ideas. Although I disagree in terms of genetics (since human selection is far more precise than natural selection), without a harsh environment to adapt to, they would definitely lose certain traits (much like dogs vs wolfs). But the main point I wanted to make is that it is infinitely better to be bred in captivity than to be totally extinct. Of course, it's far from ideal, but if it's all we got, then we have to go that route. Rejecting an imperfect solution without any better alternative is not a good process for decision making.
      We have been able to successfully reintroduce certain species that were extinct in the wild back into their natural habitat, all thanks to the work of certain zoos. Oftentimes, the revenue generated by the zoo is whats actually goes to animal conservation, especially given the lack of government funding. Also, they give us a basis for research that helps us understand the animals better, they raise awareness of the public on the status of the animals and why we should be working harder to keep them around. So, zoos are definitely a vital component of our animal preservation arsenal (and obviously not talking about the Tiger King kind of zoos).

    A good rule of thumb is to imagine yourself in the animals' situation, being thrown into an unfamiliar environment without a voice, and any attempt to show that you don't like it would lead to severe repercussions. Everyone is human and can innocently be spreading pictures of distressed animals so it's our duty to help them see what they're doing without forcing it on them.

    Thank you so much Tyler Jane Robins‼️ I feel that animals are one of the last minorities to have rights, freedom, and LOVE in this human world. They are continuously misunderstood, exploited, and mistreated‼️All animals are used for human purposes, because we are SO SELFISH and everything is always about us. It's so sad and it's such a sign of how humans are so slowly evolving❗️ Imagine working in a laboratory and thinking you are doing good by abusing and terrorizing these chimps‼️ It's hard to believe that anyone could work in that kind of a place with that kind of unconsciousness, doing those unspeakable crimes to innocent animals, it is so HIDEOUS‼️ These scientists and others who work in these labs should be thrown in jail❗️ Compare that to Nazi's tormenting Jews, it's the same thing❗️ I have exclamations after every sentence because it's all so massively mean and sadistic❗️ I think all those laboratory people should experience some of the pain they inflict on these helpless animals. I am so disgusted by the human race with it's self absorption and everything resolves around our safety, health, and entertainment. WAKE UP PEOPLE and stop thinking only about ourselves. We share this planet with many other species....we are not the only species, we just act like it....

    As someone who wants to own a pet store that only buys/sells animals (like bearded dragons, snakes, birds, etc.) from reputable breeders that care for their animals, and require prospective owners to prove their knowledge and that they've done significant research and are prepared to care for whatever pet they're trying to purchase. And also wants to run a reputable and well run wildlife sanctuary, I love this video.

      @@Em-mp4hf rescues would be available too, I actually already work with an organization that rescues reptiles. And the only way we can discourage irresponsible ownership is by education, I'm more likely to prevent a family from getting one they shouldn't by requiring research and making sure they know what they're getting into, instead of them going somewhere like Petco and just buying one from there with no info and not even the right supplies.

    I don’t like any video that show wild animals in any type of captivity. The only thing I find alright is associations that take animals out of this type of situation and in to a retirement. Anytime you see a baby they have been taken away from there moms or moms killed so they can get the baby.

    I worked i zoos that treat their animals better than most hospitals treat their patients, I've seen freacking elephants recieve acupuncture right in front of me.
    Plus most zoologists even famous ones like Sir David Attenburough and Jane Goodall are pro zoos by not speaking of the Irwins. Even national Geographic supports good zoos by having several programs and documentary about said zoos

En esos "santirorios" se le da un trato muy malo a los animales, los lastiman e impiden libertades sólo para la diversión y entretenimiento de las personas.
