- TJ discusses her internship at Fauna Foundation, the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Canada, where she witnessed the lasting impact of captivity and abuse on former pet, performer, and research chimps. She connects the experiences of the Fauna chimps to those of captive wildlife in general who are frequently commodified - and mistreated - for the sake of human entertainment, and she stresses the importance of engaging responsibly with wildlife in-person and online. TJ Robins (she/her/hers) is a Tufts senior double-
majoring in biology and anthropology. Next year, she’ll be attending the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine
where she plans on studying zoological/conservation
medicine. TJ is really excited to discuss her experience
interning at a chimpanzee sanctuary where she was able
to care for and study chimps retired from cross-fostering research, biomedical research, and zoos. In working with the chimps, TJ became increasingly aware of the ethical problems associated with keeping and/or interacting with captive primates and captive animals in general. She’s inspired to give a TEDx talk on the ethics of “captive wild animal encounters” to spread awareness about the issue. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Thank you, Tyler-Jane Robins, for being a real world advocate. Please stay strong and vocal. Our beautiful beasts deserve our respect. Humans have been savages. Time to evolve.
Freedom for all animals
Free them from the zoos, they best run wild
Mother nature calls to them
@Moto Trooper yes and slaughterhouses! No place for living being.
That way we can eradicate them faster? As sad as it is, for many species, captivity is the best chance at avoiding extinction.
Rpicquendar Tyui the problem is that animals bred in captivity can never possess the same “quality” as wild animals. Not only do they lack the complex behaviors that help them survive in the wild, by caring mainly about quantity, the process of natural selection is made impossible. This results in animals that are in many ways less capable of surviving in the wild, sometimes crippled versions of their wild ancestors that had to survive on their own. They can cause what is called genetic pollution. We can never breed animals for nature, we can only breed them for our ego.
@@SaikolaM Yes I mostly agree with your ideas. Although I disagree in terms of genetics (since human selection is far more precise than natural selection), without a harsh environment to adapt to, they would definitely lose certain traits (much like dogs vs wolfs). But the main point I wanted to make is that it is infinitely better to be bred in captivity than to be totally extinct. Of course, it's far from ideal, but if it's all we got, then we have to go that route. Rejecting an imperfect solution without any better alternative is not a good process for decision making.
We have been able to successfully reintroduce certain species that were extinct in the wild back into their natural habitat, all thanks to the work of certain zoos. Oftentimes, the revenue generated by the zoo is whats actually goes to animal conservation, especially given the lack of government funding. Also, they give us a basis for research that helps us understand the animals better, they raise awareness of the public on the status of the animals and why we should be working harder to keep them around. So, zoos are definitely a vital component of our animal preservation arsenal (and obviously not talking about the Tiger King kind of zoos).
Absolutely amazing talk! I have left several zoos and animal sanctuaries in tears after seeing the conditions, tiny cages, and the look in captive animals eyes. It must be a wonderful feeling to speak for our furry friends who don’t have a voice. Continue the much needed good work! ❤️
What a fabulous talk! This young lady is going to be an outstanding vet. Thank you for all the great information! I've been looking for a way to help animals in more ways than I currently do. This has given me the answer. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for doing this!
Such a good speech ! Show compassion to animals, do not be complicit in their exploitation, and go vegan !
I love this talk. Thank you Tyler jane
A good rule of thumb is to imagine yourself in the animals' situation, being thrown into an unfamiliar environment without a voice, and any attempt to show that you don't like it would lead to severe repercussions. Everyone is human and can innocently be spreading pictures of distressed animals so it's our duty to help them see what they're doing without forcing it on them.
Love this talk. Thanks TJ Robins. And best of luck. ✌🏾
I love animals more than I love people! There, I said it.
Me too..but I do love children too 🤫🤭
Release of "tiger king" documentary was a great push for wildlife advocates, for sure
Tiger king did reveal a different side of humanity
This lady really cares about wildlife. Kudos for her commitment! Thanks Mrs. Robins for encouraging human responsibility on how we treat great apes.
Injustice must have a voice, and humans should know about the appalling treatment that animals in captivity receive.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Good work!
oh my gosh... i couldn't watch the whole video yet, I will, tho... But at 4 minutes I can't stop crying...
I'm taking notes.
This lady is amazing omgggggg she's gunna go so far in life

Fantastic job!!! So impressive!!
Thank you so much Tyler Jane Robins‼️ I feel that animals are one of the last minorities to have rights, freedom, and LOVE in this human world. They are continuously misunderstood, exploited, and mistreated‼️All animals are used for human purposes, because we are SO SELFISH and everything is always about us. It's so sad and it's such a sign of how humans are so slowly evolving❗️ Imagine working in a laboratory and thinking you are doing good by abusing and terrorizing these chimps‼️ It's hard to believe that anyone could work in that kind of a place with that kind of unconsciousness, doing those unspeakable crimes to innocent animals, it is so HIDEOUS‼️ These scientists and others who work in these labs should be thrown in jail❗️ Compare that to Nazi's tormenting Jews, it's the same thing❗️ I have exclamations after every sentence because it's all so massively mean and sadistic❗️ I think all those laboratory people should experience some of the pain they inflict on these helpless animals. I am so disgusted by the human race with it's self absorption and everything resolves around our safety, health, and entertainment. WAKE UP PEOPLE and stop thinking only about ourselves. We share this planet with many other species....we are not the only species, we just act like it....
As someone who wants to own a pet store that only buys/sells animals (like bearded dragons, snakes, birds, etc.) from reputable breeders that care for their animals, and require prospective owners to prove their knowledge and that they've done significant research and are prepared to care for whatever pet they're trying to purchase. And also wants to run a reputable and well run wildlife sanctuary, I love this video.
Shelby Pennington why don’t you just sell animal products instead of animals- think about all the families that get dragons and fish, get sick of them and just throw them out! Be realistic! Unless you start some kind of rescue for animals just like this. Watch ohio fish rescue..
Shelby Pennington great ...so you believe in trading in wild animals and that they should be kept as pets.! Not good. Please don’t do this.
@@PencilFull0fLead I literally said from responsible breeders, as in not wild caught. There is nothing wrong with (CORRECTLY) keeping reptiles like bearded dragons and certain snakes. They live much longer as pets and have literally every need taken care of. (again, if the owner is responsible, I support responsible pet ownership)
@@Em-mp4hf rescues would be available too, I actually already work with an organization that rescues reptiles. And the only way we can discourage irresponsible ownership is by education, I'm more likely to prevent a family from getting one they shouldn't by requiring research and making sure they know what they're getting into, instead of them going somewhere like Petco and just buying one from there with no info and not even the right supplies.
Juno Donat thats exactly what I’d like to try to change, animals are not commodities, they are living feeling creatures that deserve to be treated as such. We won’t change anything buy just saying it’s hopeless and not trying.
I don’t like any video that show wild animals in any type of captivity. The only thing I find alright is associations that take animals out of this type of situation and in to a retirement. Anytime you see a baby they have been taken away from there moms or moms killed so they can get the baby.
Thank you
Best inspiration speeches this channel ❤️
Let's never forget that this and much more is the experimentation that so many African enslaved endured.
Good one
Is it ethical/possible to have a sanctuary where the animals are able to move freely in a large area but have the option to safely say hi to people?
It's strange to think that Bubbles outlived Michael Jackson. Thank you for bringing this information to the public!
Thanks to much good luck 👍
I do not think so this will create any form of impact on the humans. The animals are going to be treated the same manner. But this is only knowledgeable for us. There - she said the reason why many Research Institutes still function; tax payers money. If people are concerned to put an end to this then they should protest
Damm good speech... however I am not against to advocate for captive wildlife... but our first priority is to ensure human beings must have all the facilities than ANIMALS..
@@kaylae3661 practically you are right ..since we human kill them if we don't preserve now... We need to educate our generation..
I love you!
If there's any chick that can get me to sit and listen to a captive wildlife ted talk, it's this one.

How to advocate for wildlife prisons.
Bu konuşmanın Türkçesini nasıl izleye bilirim ???
I've never understood the fascination people had with zoos and aquariums. If people stopped going and being entertained, there would be no reason to capture them. But you can't help it, people will do anything for entertainment.
to be fair with coronavirus, its been found that since the zoos have shut, the animals have been getting quite sad without humans. I've seen footage of dingo's going mad when a single zoo keeper approached during the zoos closure so the animals must like humans to a degree
Good credited zoos do more for conservation than any of us will do in 10 lifetimes, zoos serve as embassadors for the animals, a visit to a zoo, seeying the animals right there in front of you surpasses any emotion you can get from a documentary, of wichbkids just dont have the patience to sit through.
I worked i zoos that treat their animals better than most hospitals treat their patients, I've seen freacking elephants recieve acupuncture right in front of me.
Plus most zoologists even famous ones like Sir David Attenburough and Jane Goodall are pro zoos by not speaking of the Irwins. Even national Geographic supports good zoos by having several programs and documentary about said zoos
Просто шедевр
This is so very sad.
