Bunny hops are an essential MTB skill and are the foundation for a lot of skills like jumping and just flowing through the trails. Knowing how to bunnyhop whatever bike you're riding and whatever the terrain is therefore very important. Here Neil shows you the specific of bunny hopping on a hardtail bike.
To get started with bunnyhopping on your hardtail mountain bike, look at your bike set up; a lower saddle and a shorter stem will make this easier. Then, move on to your body position, buy using down and backwards motion with your hips to get the front wheel in the air. Don't just use brute force to bunny hop - that won't get you anywhere. To get your rear wheel in the air, dip your toes and push back slightly on the pedals. To put it all together, lift the rear wheel as your front wheel peaks.
There you go - bunny hopping on your hardtail mountain bike! As always, let us know what you think in the comments below and don't forget to LIKE and SHARE this video!

Definitely more hard tail vids please as not many people have full squishes :)
Joe Milnes haha you cracked me up with full squishies
cringe gaming and now, 7 months later I have a 'full squish' and I retract this statement 😂
Joe Milnes haha I just seen the comment and im still giggling a bit at it xD

Can you do more skills on hardtails? A lot of the fanbase has hardtails.
+BizbDesign|Danyloo Thanks, we will be. Neil
Can i borrow ur old Hardtail bike?hoho

yes, good idea
Lol why...

+Justin F just give us a full suspension bike or stfu.
Don't know why you are so mad and I just because fs bikes are smoother and stuff idk
As a smaller rider, I appreciate that Neil used a large bike for this demo. I've been working on this technique for some time and am still far from mastering it.
So... Did you master it? Can it actually be done?

Loving the hardtail vids. Can we get one on how to manual a hardtail?
Rear sus. doesn't really make that much of a difference if you are lifting the Front wheel. It's a god damn front wheel
The sus squishes and slackens out the geo and makes it a little easier to prop the front wheel up
No, they describe that you need to get in a manual position to do a proper bunny hop. They don't tell you how to hold a manual on a hardtail. Do you know what a manual is?
Yeah don't think you know what I'm talking about... :D
I'm talking about holding a manual for like, more than five feet. Not the same as putting your arse back and watching your front wheel pop up a few inches.
Yeah you should look up what a manual is it's different than a wheelie. I don't think you should be arguing with me if you don't know what I'm talking about...
THANK YOU NEIL!! At 50, I re-kindled my interest in MTB after watching most of your videos. My bike was hanging on my wall since 2012. But after watching your tutorials, I felt hope in upgrading my skill (not my bike yet ). I just knew about GMBN lately, but with your "How to..." videos, I can now do a 4" bunny hop. I will continue practicing to gain height and will move on to other skills like the turning endo, track stand, side hop and of course the jumps. More power to you guys! Cheers.
That's awesome to hear! Keep up the good work :)
No worries, glad to hear it! Neil

lucky! Didnt work for me.
More hardtail videos please!
Great guys , do more hardtail videos :D
Great video! I am one of the 'shorter riders' you are talking about. I really appreciate you demonstrating bunny hops on a bike that is set up "too big" for you especially with the seat being higher up, and being more stretched out. You've replicated my bike vs. body geometry almost exactly. Now I have motivation to get better at it. And keep up the great work with the hardtail vids!
I am learning bunny hop since 1 month and now I am able to do a decent bunny hop from a 29er hard tail (all thanks to you)
I've been waiting for this specific video from you guys for awhile. Not preloading the bike as hard was the fix for me. It always felt akward doing it, and I always thought that was my issue. Now I can bunny hop curbs after the first attempt.
YES YES YES! Thank you Neil!

that actually sounded very poetic. lighten up.
Lol "He's dead he can't ride... Have fun riding!"
Who’s that. Sorry. Is that the guy in the vid?
after a lot of practice and studying this video I learned how to bunny hop! I'm getting pretty good at it too. thanks GMBN
Thank God! Finally a simple and comprehensive video about how to PROPERLY do a bunny hop. I've seen tons of vids and none of them helped me. After watching this one, 1h of practise and call it done. Thanks GMBN!
hardtails are love ;)
hardtail is love
hardtail is life
hardtail is wife
Yes! Do more hardtail how to's!!
No different!!
i am brand new to the mountain bike world. at 55 years old i find it interesting. (guess i haven't broken enough bones in my life) i have been watching your videos and learned quite a bit. thank you for taking the time to do these vids. they are short and to the point. i will continue to watch and learn. again........thank you
Thanks for making videos for us hardtail riders!
#voteformorehardtailvideos
really helpful was trying to pump like crazy but it didn't help now i think im going to nail it!
I don't think i thrust my hips backwards hard enough cause front wheel doesn't go high at all.
+Peter Wobacz I think its more about shifting your wieght smoothly and making sure that you get your hips low, and back over the rear axle. I'm struggling with this too, but I think it's largely because I am not getting the weight low and back enough.
#ASKGMBN can you make some detailed vid on rear wheel lift using hard tail.
Really well explained. Thank you
Can't wait to try it out!
"I have XXX and XXX, I'm XXX tall, can I bunny hop"... ;D Theres always hundreds of these on every bunny hop video
I seem to have a hard time getting out of the L position and throwing my hips forward. I am assuming you are pulling on the bars to get back up from almost a seated position. Do you actually pull the bars towards you to give you enough leverage to get back up from the manual?
You shouldn't be using your hands at all for a manual/bunny hop
+Gram Nylen It certainly looks as if he is pulling that bike into his stomach. I know he is launching his hips forward but if you watch him very closely you can see that he is definitely pulling back which I suspect is to get back up out of the L position. I need to work on getting my timing down better. I think I am doing exactly what he says is the common mistake of waiting to long to try and launch forward.
Today I just bought my new cube hardtail I rode a full sus for about two years and they fell so different this really helped thanks.
best explanation ive seen yet
How to rear wheel lift? it is so hard
@ehaso yes I try many time more then one month. But their is something trick to push cycle back without using front break.. 😑my comment is 2 year's bro
@ehaso try more it's easy .. Try to do with small and light weight bicycle🚲... We learn fast on that.. 😭not every one have gear bicycle and bmx to do stunts. Do with anything until you hop from objects on street
@@hungry_pen bro you know squat? Just imaging you are jumping with a squat mode, you could feel the power output from your ass

#AskGMBN What are your thoughts on Sr Suntour XCR fork ?
+Sarcastic Gamer LOL!!!
My first bike had one, it pretty much packed up after about 10 rides, honestly steer clear of budget suntour forks, they are absolute garbage, save your money and get something with a Rockshox sektor or something like that
Sooo stoked, just got my first GMBN T shirt all the way from England to the California Desert!
The L shaped motion for the hips was perfect. Helped me so much. Thank you!
Same .. how’s the progress now ?
What bike are you using in the video?
that's a hot ht
Scott 905c
Guys how to manual a rigid??
You literally do the SAME EXACT THING
How would it be different please tell please
I have been practising for half month and could do decent bunny hop from a 29er hard tail (all thanks to you)
Thanks for this detailed tutorial, it helps alot.
That rear wheel lift looks really impossible @@
Believe me or not but I can do it...
Of course you can do it ! A lot of people can do it ( not all of them). Neil can do it, means other people can do it ( except me )
Tbh i found this step way easier than the manual
Try to do it first in really slow speed with braking with your front break to complete stopping, that will give your brain the notion of the move of your hips towards the bars and transfering your weight forward. Then you can start to do it without the help of the brake. Thats how i learnt it and it was really easy
How long did it take you to learn it ?
How tall is Neil?
+Corey Hamelin 178cms
+Global Mountain Bike Network
me too xD exactly 178 cm
+StinkEye//GFX Designer O.o He looks much smaller on video
+rcs2003 : maybe the plus size tires and the dropped seatpost matter.
He's a giant next to me. i'm a good 20cms shorter, however once on the trails i find it makes no odds. And no one ever wants to borrow one of my bikes, which is good...
Awesome! I've been waiting for this hardtail video. thanks!
This video is even better than your previous one. Congratulations!!!!!!
#askgbn will bunny hopping can damge our MTB ??
Mayank Chaudhary no
depends what components your mtb has
Can u do it on TANDEM!? XD
Thank you so much this is the exact video is was looking for cause this is the type of bike I ride.
great to see more Hard Tail vids!!

Next: How To Manual a Hardtail.
plz 🙏🙏🙏
YES!!!!!
Yes! Seems like Neil struggled to keep manual on this bike.
Peter Wobacz haha indeed
Lucas Cornette if you listen you know why, the bike is to big for him and the stem also don't help to do it. If your bike is to large for you, you never get good results. This can also send you more often into the hospital.
Thank you sir it will be very useful across speed breakers😊
avid fan of your vids lot of lesson for mountain biking.. thanks for sharing.
Landing bunnyhops that nose heavy look and feels ugly.
Literally exactly the same as a full sus
Yeah idk why everyone likes to see hard tails so much lol. They just make me ache just seeing him land that
+Justin F they are easily 5x as common as full sus, and they handle differently. I prefer to watch hardtails, it's more fun to see them take on obstacles.
+Sam Hilton Basics are the same, but not having a rear shock to compress, the throwing weight back needs to be exaggerated and popping the back wheel is so much more difficult. On the trails I avoid the hop on my hard-tail unless I absolutely have to, tend to just manual then unweight the rear
Rob J Nah, the shock absorbs the compression, hopping a hard tail is far easier
+Rob J it's all the same technique. i just hear excuses
Wow, that video was game changer, so much helpful , now I'm finally start practicing, thank u so much!
Just awesome and very very helpful
Thank u so much man! I am riding my bike for so many years now but i nevee knew how to lift up my rear wheel! I‘ve never thought off pushing against my pedals!
Greetings from Austria
All of your videos are amazing☺
Awesome looking hardtail!
that Scott scale looks so good, my dream bike
Thank you so much, this is so helpful!
Thank you GMBN ! :)))
I'll try to do my best :D
Thank you mate! I'll go out now to practice it.

Dude awesome, can't wait to try this.
Hey I just wanted to let you know that you guys have taught me so much! And I really like your channel!
Thank you bro this is so Helpful!!
Neil nailed it. (again)
thx for the hardtail vid
That helped a lot thanks guys do more hard tail vids
Im so happy right now because i just learnt to bunny hop and this was the video that made that happen so i just say thanks!
What a beautiful bike!...
Thanks this video really helped. I was able to lift my rear wheel a ton but didn’t have the correct front end technique so I almost went over the bars a couple of times
😱 your bikes are just sooo cool
Thanks bro....
I really.. learned bunny hop ..
I can't believe it 😱
Ty that was the best tutorial on youtube
Exactly what i needed
@GMBN I really enjoy all your skills videos. When I was young we just fell off a lot and didn't make much progress because we never knew these techniques.
Amen!
Thank u so much this was very useful
One thing that worked out for me was using a 6L bottle of water on the ground (with some small rocks to avoid movement by the wind) and I tried to bunny hop over it! It works very well and if you do a mistake there's no problem hitting the bottle and it wont damage any bike part ;)
Thx i learned alot
thank you so much i learn how to do this and now i am doing it very well
Thanks man
best technique Tnx ✊
this video was really helpfull for me
Thanks guys
Thx finally I did it
Thanks mate
Great video...Helped me nail it straight away...More hardtail videos please
Thanks great video
This explaination suit me...thanks...
Thank you GMBN! Best video yet on the bunny hop. Normal everyday bike with an 80 mil stem. So damn frustrated I can't manual.
Finally, more hardtail videos
Thanks for making this video! Finnaly i do bunny hop right :)
Thank you so much I finally learned how to bunny hop
Thank you
the bike you have is exactly like mine seat as low as it goes long stem and seat is at perfect place around 3 to 5 mm up lol nice to see y'all on a bike I am used to
I like this hartrail. It's pretty agressive.
They make it look so easy.
I used to ride BMX. Transitioning to mountain bike and trying BHop was so exhausting. This really uses a lot of your strength.
Being a younger, newer mountain biker, your channel has helped me out,but it would be cooler to start doing more hard tail videos
Thanks. Simple explanation. Good video :)
Thanks so much. Now it's so clear :D
