I've been faking it. I fake confidence all the time. I fake confidence about my injury, playing situation for next year, trials, try-outs, etc. I always am faking it because I am a firm believer that if you keep up the positive self-talk and are constantly hammering in positive thoughts about your situation, then eventually... you start to believe it. In this video, I talk about how I fake it all the time.

The faking that ur injury is ok is so tru tho. Especially when ur like me and I've been injured for 14 months and still am not getting any better. I have to fake to my coach all the time that I'm ok and can keep going because there are no other people on my team that can play me position on the field so I always play full games. It's tough having to convince everyone including urself that ur okay. I hope u get better Matt!

I understand where you're coming from. I've been having achilles tendonitis for sometime now and I ruptured my achilles 2 years ago before I had a trial down for the Charleston Battery. I bounced back 100%, at least I thought so. It has healed but every now and again it gives me problems and I tell myself that I can get through it regardless but in reality I'm scared because what if this time it won't rupture and it actually tears and pops. I just gotta stay positive and don't think on anything negative about it or else eventually that's just going to bring me down and I'll lose my motivation. But I believe in you man and you can definitely do this, You have already made your dream come true just stay patient and trust the process.

  • @jimibrando

Man that part about injuries and faking it was the most real and relatable thing I've ever heard any pro say. I'm going through a very similar recovery right now; had a hernia repaired and now my lower abdomen feels great but my groin gets extremely painful whenever I play/train for longer than 45 mins. It's frustrating going to surgeons and doctors and them just telling you to wait. I'm 22 and was planning on tryout for teams in Hungary over the summer but that's looking more and more unlikely. Frustration sets in and if you're not positive and have the right mind set, you end up just another failed pro soccer player. Like you said, you've gotta keep that positive mind set when everything is working against you. If you don't believe in yourself, who will right? Keep your head up man and keep working hard. Hopefully one day we'll meet on a professional pitch :)

Hey,Matt ! I just want to say that I feel you 100%. This is the reality of being a football player... but you gotta keep going, quit is not an option ! I had a knee operation in mid 2016 and coming back from a serious injury is really hard. Especially when the team decides to release you, because you got injured ( I was in the same situation) . Going to trials and looking for a new team is really stressful, I have experienced this and I really understand your struggle, because you always wonder what if I don't find a team and all those thoughts ... but you have to be positive in those moments and you will make it ! I remember when I was abroad, far away from family and friends ..waiting to get a trial and find a new team. those moments are tough, but they either make you or break you .. You have to believe in yourself !!! Keep posting those REAL videos, because it shows what the reality of being a football player really is ! Wish you all the best bro 💪🏻 I believe in you !

Hey Matt you should check out Norway. For example my local team Honefoss BK is a second division team in Norway. They played in Obos ligaen ( it was called Tippeligaen back then) for 2,3 years ago. Norwegians suck at football, so we rely on people like you to help us. XD Short but true. The footballers in Norway get paid really well even though they play like shit. The division is so weak because most of the norwegians players dont work as hard as you for example.
Look at Martin Ødegaard. 15 years old he was dominating the league, ofc he was good but also because the league is shit. But still he got bought up by Real Madrid. So you get easily scouted in Norway and if you play good for a season, you may end up in a top team in Europe.
Trails in Norway is super easy. Just go to any top club, 1 division or second, for example Honefoss BK. Send them a email and they most definetly will let you play for 2 or 3 trainings. Honefoss definetly lack in defence and they need a right or a left back. I definetly think you could dominate in that position for Honefoss! Good luck in the future!

For me it was the opposite, I tore my abdominal area all the way through my left groin, but the groin healed in 2 months and the abdomen didn't get better until 8 months after the initial injury. Main lesson learned here is that you need to learn to understand your body so that you can try to prevent injuries. Take more time to do stretches throughout the day (prevention). With pulled ligaments and/or tendons you need to rest and not stretch as much in these more tender areas. Always admire your motivation and hustle, big fan from Toronto.

I can relate to your situation so much , except I let it break me , I let my self get out of shape and didn’t train everyday like I used to , got an opportunity and missed it, I train again bc life isn’t the same without , I play everyday whether it be futsal or indoor , about to start a semi pro indoor season and hopefully play spring at my college, my main hope is to get second chance , you have to be prepared for any opportunity that comes your way

Hey Matt, I don't know if you read these so I'm probably wasting my time, but if you do, I just want to thank you for making these videos and for your honesty. I was able to secure myself a tryout with an NPSL team here in the U.S. thats coming up in a couple weeks, so I can relate to the sort of limbo you must feel you're in right now. Pretty much my entire future is just hanging out in the balance, and it could all come crashing down. Best case scenario is that I make the team, have to move halfway across the country, find a place to live, find a way to actually support myself (npsl is amateur) and do all this while actually fitting in time to train and improve as a soccer player. If everything goes according to plan, counterintuitively, my life will become 1000% harder. But in the worst case scenario, everything stays the same. I stay unemployed, without a team, and without any other options. I have given up virtually everything I have in pursuit of this dream. There is so much weight on my shoulders but I've just been pretending it isn't there. It's crazy to hear you say exactly what I've been feeling, even though I've never been able to explain it to myself. Even though I'll be starting at the bottom of the barrel, a start is a start and it's a step that I have to take. I wasn't lucky enough to have been raised in a soccer family, or to have been brought up through some elite academy, or to have even been born in a country where soccer is a priority, but I still have this immense passion for the game that I developed on my own and am now in desperate need of. I have nothing else. So again, thanks again for sharing your journey with us. It gives people like myself hope that perhaps all of the all of the sacrifices are worth it. If you're interested, I'll let you know how the tryout goes. Who knows, maybe I'll run into you out on the pitch someday :)

Sh*t bro, i haven't experienced half the stuff you been through, but i know about injury(i got an ankle injury and was out for a year) and these same thoughts ran through my mind, will i retire? Will i get back to my previous level? Can i still become a pro? And there's a point where you gotta say f*ck it and just live man, one day at a time, shit is rough for you and what you said is true, just keep being positive bro, it'll work out somehow👍

Yes you're right Matt, keep positive thinking on life because once you think or worrying the negatives it's really dark, and nasty , keep your mind off of negatives that probably gonna happen , just focus on what you can control , by think , talk to yourself positives , rather than think and worrying about your problem, the problem comes by the problem itself , I feel it but I rise from the darkness with positives on my life and the result is I am hungry for new failure , problem , cause I know from that I can be more positive and confidence ,
Matt wish you all the best , may God bless your injury ,problem , and keep positives , keep faking it until you make it 😉

Matt, don't worry about the future and don't bring yourself down, you will find a team. Look for team tryouts. During tryouts try to the best of your ability, Players that have the work ethic and the skill you have usually will find a team regardless if you get rejected by another. It will be hard for me im 15 and i want to go professional and i work every day on myself and my mentality, i realize how hard it is, i want to play in the top leagues like la liga, premier league, calcio a, league one, bundesliga, and make my family proud and play internationally for south korea. Matt no homo i love you man. Like you always say listen to your body. You're a right back, if a coach can't see the skill you have as a defender, the coach has been paid by other rb to make the team. Just continue to work, the moment you doubt yourself is when you fail and won't do anything. I will take the risks for myself and for my family, i play the game for my family and for the game. The beautiful game i play is what i will always play. Lots of professional players have been rejected and they never gave up which is the reason all of them have a team they play for. Matt you got this.
