It's the external appearance of a functional marriage that gives him the sense of authority and responsibility that he desires. Not the actual woman in the relationship - neither his wife nor mistress.

I think it may be a little deeper than that. I think there is some guilt involved keeping him with Beth. If you watch the full show when Beth told her husband she had 6 months to live because of some rare medical illness, he believes her and makes a plan to marry his mistress after that time is up. Everyone in town knows that rob is a serial cheater. Including a neighborhood husband on the lane. While he expects Beth to be home taking care of house duties, he openly (in public) displays his affection for his mistresses. He cheats only on Beth’s clock so to speak. So marrying a mistress before a natural grief period, consequently will only make him look like more of an awful man.
The guilt of their child dying is something that weighs on robs shoulder everyday. He knows he has only has himself to blame. With that, he knows that Beth was partially destroyed that day because her daughter died and if he did decide to dissolve their marriage that would destroy her completely. So rob foolishly remains being married to Beth out of some guilt and hope she will never discover his sins. He is trash for sure but I don’t believe he cares much for his reputation. Only his wife’s opinion of him matters.

When I was a single woman, any guy I found out was already committed to someone (several guys who asked me out, but I hadn't dated yet), I immediately turned down.

I feel very lucky to have been happily and faithfully married for 20 years, to a man that was single when we met, and has stayed extremely loyal the entire time. Loyalty isn't an accident. It's a conscious decision. I'm sure he's had plenty of opportunities to stray. But he hasn't, and neither have I. Because of that, we can get through any disagreement or difference. We are there for each other every day.

He ignored & silenced everything she tried to say to him. He dgaf about her opinion. His boss's opinion does matter to him, though. If it’s only about his image why doesn’t he cheat discretely and only in motels (which some guys do). He seems to cheat very carelessly because all his neighbors know his cheating antics already and it seems like he only cares if his wife finds out.
Secondly, if all he cared about was an obedient wife why wasn’t he looking elsewhere when Beth was completely defying him(both out of anger and defying him out of her new found purpose)? like when she showed up high af to his bosses dinner because she found out rob does pot with his mistress but he doesn’t with her. Or the time when Beth took all of her clothes off because she was fed up with the way rob never noticed anything she did to look nice. Also (his boss saw that too lol). Or the time when Beth didn’t even bother to make him dinner at the end of the show because she was busy af planning how to get away with his murder. Beth told rob she ordered Chinese, but I know she didn’t because like why even bother when she’s killing her husband. I feel like if rob didn’t have a shred of empathy he would have divorced her a long time ago. Like if his wife is openly unhappy, openly defying him then why didn’t he leave Beth for April once it looked like she wasn’t going to serve his purpose anymore?
Lastly, when Beth pretended to have cancer- why didn’t he jump ship right then and there? If Beth got super sick she wasn’t even going to be able to make him his delicious dinners anymore but he still told his mistress (April) to wait six months for marriage. Rob planned to stay with Beth until she passed because that’s how long Beth told him she had to live. It feels like it doesn’t make sense why Rob did the things he did in the show if it wasn’t out of guilt. Also every time Beth wanted to talk about their daughter it looked like rob was going to throw up. If that’s not severe trauma and guilt I don’t know what is.

If tgey would be honest about that noone would want them so they kinda stuck in being insincere to get what they want. everyone a means to get them happy and tgeur desires fulfilled and their 'love' is based on what kind of feelings they get, not about who the other person is. They lost the connection to their heart and women who value their connection to their own heart, will learn to recognise this lack of loyalty. The mistress got suckered into having an affair with a married man because he never communicates his feelings properly with his own wife about what he’s missing from her, and therefore looks outside of his marriage to find it. In doing so, he falls into the devil’s trap of having to keep up his appearances and even goes so far as to blame his wife for the death of their child, just so he won’t be exposed.

Both are wrong in this situation. Sir has the upmost audacity, that’s self explanatory. Girl, you need find your self-worth because if y’all REALLY think a man is gonna leave his wife for you and y’all live happily ever after, I hate to burst your bubble but it won’t. He’s gonna cheat on you, too. Very rarely do they not and even then, it’s still morally wrong to be with someone who is in a monogamous relationship. I always tell people who cheat or participate in the cheating, go be polyamorous and stop wanting a cake and eat it, too. That’s not normal.

He was absent in his marriage but didnt invest in his mistress either. This means he has deep personal issues. His mistress isn’t particularly interesting compared to his wife either. He didn’t do it for excitement or for lust. He did it to escape himself. It’s himself he can’t live with.
He blames his wife for their child’s death. He tells his wife that he smoked weed for the excitement and makes excuses as to why he had the affair. He gaslights and manipulates. Here, he manipulates the mistress the exact same way by saying that he can’t leave his wife. He’s not loyal to either and this type of man never is because the problem is deep.
When it’s men who are stable in all other areas, it’s usually an event or past trauma that triggers such extreme instability and lack of consistency in emotions, stance, views and behaviour. He doesn’t have logical reasons for his actions or lack of accountability. That’s because it’s an emotional and psychological problem.
