Wonka (2023), starring Timothe Chalamet, has been released, and surprisingly... it's good? In this review, we'll discuss the controversy of Chalamet's casting, as well as the charges that this film is just a cynical money-grab!
wonka review,wonka chalamet,wonka 2023,wonka,wonka (2023),timothe chalamet - Zábava
I personally think that the character being a little bit less dark and more optimistic and lighthearted, kind of makes sense for a younger version of the character. The version of Wonka that you see in the original film is somebody that already had to go through years of the same kind of struggles that you see happening in this movie. I was telling a friend of mine that it actually makes a lot of sense in terms of character development that he would start off to be more this way, but then overtime become more guarded and prickly as you say. The film also leaves room I feel for more in between movies to show more times that he had to struggle against Slugworth. In the original lore, it states that in the height of his success that he had to continuously fight against Slugworth trying to steal his secrets. Another film or two could show this development to the point where he decides to shut down his factory, which is alluded to in the original film. I thought it was quite well done.
First of all, I really don't think there is anything wrong with a director not auditioning for a role. The director has a vision, it's his film, and if he sees an actor who is perfect to be the ML in his production, he should hire him. After all, even scripts are written for a specific actor/actress. There is nothing wrong with that.
Secondly, the Wonka in the Wonka film is young and idealistic, not a puffed-up middle-aged guy. As if anyone didn't know, personalities change as a result of life experiences. The fact that a movie telling the story of a young Wonka is colorful and friendly is a good thing.
True some films are written with an actor in mind
“A vision” lol this movie was shit out like Diarrhea without any care or insight or foresight to any form of quality
Wonaka will do well with audiences because its very safe, has a star-studded cast, and is family friendly for the holiday. Theaters and restaurants will also enjoy promoting it because of the food-tie-ins.
How is this soyboy considered a sex symbol and how does he have a career after that N@z¡ p3d0 movie? Putting him in this makes this a no go. WB movies are as off my list as Disney.
The cast is not that 'starry'.
There's Timothy himself, small parts for Hugh Grant, Key, Olivia Coleman, & basically a cameo of Sally Hawkins. The rest are not really known
+++++, SAME
Doesn't have a star studded cast, and ISN'T safe by today's PC standards.
I was skeptical of Timothy being vast for this HUGE role and I’m a Gene Wilder fan. But Tim nailed it. This film was like a musical but I think it’s a good prequel
I like how he was trying to explain to Noodle that a little orange man steals his chocolate and he's being honest and she thinks he's making it up like Willy ate his own chocolate, and for a second Willy is like "That could be a possibility." 😳 🥰
Hahaha that happened like twice, he kept saying “Oh yeah that makes more sense” 😅 like Noodle is the real adult in the relationship ahahaha
Just saw this movie and thought it was great! I realize it was a prequel, but comparing it to the other two popular Wonka/Charlie movies, I actually liked this one better. I'm 58 years old and it reminded me a little of the feeling I got as a child watching the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with Dick Van Dyke. Not quite so dark and just a nice, light-hearted fun watch with some catchy tunes and really fun characters. This is really what I needed to kick off my Christmas week to get my spirits up, and I would highly recommend to parents of young children. I can't imagine many children under the age of maybe 12 not thoroughly enjoying this movie!
Not surprised it was good. This film was done by the same director as the 2 Paddington films. If you haven’t seen them I highly recommend them.
GREAT 👌 WONKA REVIEW 👍👍👍
The fact that he sees nothing wrong with one of the “actors” from that N@z¡ p3d0 movie playing Willy Wonka does not make me want to see anything else he made.
@@Attmay
I'm confused.
What are you talking about?
Yes! He knows how to make a fun family movie with no agenda
I believe it's not uncommon for actors who are known, to not have to audition.
I honestly, think we’re all starved for good stories; does that make any sense?
And when we occasionally get one, we’re like, “Where have you been; we’ve missed you.”
As far as this movie having a more light-hearted feel, I can see why that isn’t a bad thing. Too many films have gone dark and brooding over the last 15 years.
2 things: #1 Is this the first time pappy chen used a cursed word? 😳 #2: I always wondered about this: in this movie, whatever happened to Wonka's dad? It talked about mom but never had time to talk about him.
I loved it, this is the best movie the family should see for the Holidays. It's fun, colorful, magical, adventurous, and brings out the kid for everyone that grew up with the 1971 Willy Wonka Movie I give it a good 8.5/10
So it's not woke at all?
@@stevegiles9080 if anything it will piss off the woke mob cause of the fat jokes 🤣🤣🤣 I'm waiting to see the articles talking about how its offensive to body positivity
@POPINCONEJO88 ok we got godzilla minus one and another good movie not too bad
The fat chief or the bulking up of the chief wasn't really negatively viewed by characters in the movie... but my memory isn't that good so, yeah.
Love your reviews and insight on all other things. Really love Papa Chen’s added wisdom. How lucky you are to have him.
I saw the film on a Sunday... And about 4 days earlier... My Grandma had passed away... So honestly I think I really needed a film like Wonka.. I went with my mom and saw it because she loves the original 1971 film. And we both loved it... I even cried during one certain part... But yeah... this was probably one of the best films of the year... besides the Mario movie....so for some people it's a film we wanted... But it's a film we needed and I am thankful that I got to watch it..
Willy Wonka as played by Johnny Depp gave me an irrational fear of child show hosts like Steve from Blue's clues.
Why have they made 3 Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory movies but not one Willy Wonka and the great glass elevator movie?
That would be trippy!
Willy-wonka and the great glass ceiling. Recast as a feminist entrepreneur with a vision.
The author said no to the 1974 version getting a sequel. He hated it
Wow im so happy to see this!! I showed my daughters the original and they loved it. But was very worried this would be another woke movie! Glad i saw this so now not worried aboit what type of agenda will be in it
Define "woke"
Btw i love how you and your dad go to movies together ❤️
Reminds me of Emma Stone not auditioning for La La Land. Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. I want to see this. About the sugary part of Wonka maybe before he became more cynical later in life through capitalism that made him stop leaving the factory in the 1971.
I had low expectations but it was great. No THE MESSAGE
Worth seeing in theatres
Papa Cam is something to look forward.. always keeping it straight.. He's the real G
I saw it and it was pretty good. I didn’t feel like I was getting preached to. The kids enjoyed it 🤷🏾♂️.
- Good story
- Great characters
- Positive and wholesome
Essentially the opposite of mainstream Hollywood. We need more movies like Wonka. It's the Nate Bargatze of Movies.
Timothee Chalamet is a great actor. Good reason why he's an It Boy right now.
I disagree
I thought it's because people think he's hot?
@@lawsattitude1999 he isn’t good-looking, and he isn’t a good actor either. He is proof of how far our standards have dropped.
@@Attmay dunno about his acting but agree with the looks. I think birth control is doimg something to women.
I think it makes sense that Wonka in this movie doesn't have his dark edge. This is him at the beginning of his career when he's still optimistic. In the other movies Wonka has lost his innocence and gained a dark side and that is why he is looking to retire and leave the factory to someone more pure.
Most people don't get that.
I saw this movie with my daughter and it was ok…for kids. I really think subconsciously our standards are dropping as Hollywood continues to rot. We simply WANT to like a movie we spent money to see.
Godzilla nuked those expectations...
Agree, I thought it was awful and the songs were bad.
@@peterjohn8625 No way, this movie was really solid.
Absolutely AGREE! I'm so confused by everyone loving it. It was not really funny as people are saying. Nor charming. It was essentially The Greatest Showman but without the good songs.
@@dianabarrios688Still a solid movie to take kids though!
The best part of this segment was your father. I like when he said "pissed off". He's hip!! LOL!
Didn’t expect it to me a musical but it was a great fun family movie
I had a good feeling about this movie, ill check it out on the weekend.
this movie was a freaking gem. Great music, heart, some guineanlly funny moments, including some absolutely hilarious pay offs for jokes that didnt even need to go anywhere. Also, Hugh Grant was deadpan as f and I loved every second of it.
This was a really good movie! The songs were fun, the actors were fun, and the story was very solid! I enjoyed it!
I sure didn't expect much seeing the trailer either, but all the positive reviews make me want to see it. I doubt however this is the start of a new era of musicals as some have said.
Love seeing Papa Chen
It’s nice to see you review something you enjoyed. I will definitely be seeing this film. Love your reviews.
The first 10 minutes showed promise. Then the next hour sussing out the plot was a dumpster fire. I kept thinking, “with the writers literally having a *world* *of* *pure* *imagination* to work in, they chose such a week plot and characters?” Not to mention the audacity of calling this a Prequel and so heavily handling the “re-imagining” of the lore and making it impossible to match either of the two movies… I love the silliness and absurdity of the the existing properties, but this movie’s plot itself was just plain absurd in idiocy.
I thought it was excellent and for the fact that they saved imagination to the very end was perfect timing very nostalgic emotional I laughed I even got a little teary on the mom scene I thought it was great it's about time we have a good feel good movie like this in 2023-2024
I didn't watch it and I didn't have plans to watch it (specifically because I grew up with the original). But after your review I might give it a try. Would be nice for a change to watch something that doesn't try to push a message and is just wholesome. Thank you for your review
In the original, the "Stop, Don't, Comeback..." in this one, he would mean it.
Timothée Chalamet can be pronounces either
1, French Harry Styles
2. Not Tommy Steele
I think that Timothee Chalamet dad is French but his mom is American!
It is entirely possible that by everyone "being different" that everyone in actuality winds up the same.
Hollywood's need to "deconstruct" everything has made it where wholesome will now stand out as fresh and original.
I can give a similar example with B rated anime.
So many anime are about one guy and multiple love interests that any anime featuring one boy and one girl who are for one another stands out 😅
I liked it a lot! It was delightfully whimsical. Timothée Chalamet was a solid lead. I agree with you that it felt like a movie from 25 years ago!
I had to laugh out loud when you said, "NOT a Dark Chocolate person here..." Enjoyed the review! I'm planning to see it soon.
Instead of too sugary. The prequel was too milky chocolate person lol
Not dark chocolate person lol
I prefer your French pronunciation of his name.
It's more fun!
Saw it. Speaking very honestly. This wasnt a prequel. This was a reboot.
The moment Wonka mentioned his mom was when i knew.
Now i didnt like it at first. But the backstory for wonka is better.
Willie Wonka from the remake went into chocolate to spite his father who was a dentist.
This Willie Wonka however had a dream. Came from a poor family. No father. Just his mother. And she was a brilliant chocolate maker. And willie wanted to be a magician but combined his passion for magic with the love of chocolate he got from his mom and i think thats absolutely beautiful.
From a narrative standpoint this is brilliant.
We also got to finally meet after what? A four decades? The competition that stole wonkas ideas and put him out of business.
Songs could've been better. Not a single one stuck to me but there were a ton of money shots which i did enjoy.
Oompa Loompas.... Got a little messy. And thats all ill say in terms of their origin.
But i adore. And i mean ADORE the chocolate designs in this film. Not gonna lie i was craving chocolate the entire time especially that thunder cloud wonka made. Like the entire design with the candy and chocolate was gorgeous.
Mat Baynton and Simon Farnaby are two of the Six Idiots. They're the only reason I cared to support this movie because they've already proven through the other projects they've worked on together that they know what they're doing when it comes to writing, directing, and acting.
Of course the young Wonka wasn't as cynical and worldly as the older, established Wonka. His beginnings would have started him on the road to cynicism and it would just have grown as he got older and had more negative experiences.
11:47 "Nothing weird...." 😂 Papa Chen is always so refreshingly blunt and honest. 😂
Gotta say when a lot of people are getting offered a role without needing to audition and that actor isn't the same race and/or sex as the original character I often hear cheers. Maybe the people complaining about this wouldn't have supported those decisions either, but for those that are it's just hypocrisy
I think it makes sense that an older Wonka would be a bit more cynical. After all, he was on verge of retirement.
I call him “Timmy Chimmy.”
Great video ... excellent presentation ... perfect energy ... love to hear you speak ... and you are easy on the eyes ... but those commercials are just to-o-o-o-o-o-o pon-n-n-n-n-ng
It is pretty easy...when speaking English, use English pronunciations, when speaking French or any other language, use that language's pronunciation. It is rude otherwise. When Spanish speakers say their name in Spanish to me, most of the time I have no idea how to spell it our even say it back. That is because languages use different sounds. As someone who also speaks Japanese, I know most native Japanese speakers can't hear the difference between R and L. When I lived in Japan and when speaking Japanese, I always said my name using Japanese pronunciations even thought it sounds NOTHING like my name in English. It is about being considerate.
While I was always looking forward to the movie I will say it was even better than I expected definitely in the top 10 movies this year.
Shad & his wife were thoroughly unimpressed, but you liked it... Glad to know the film is so divisive! XD
FYI as a French person we really don’t care if you mispronounce our last names.😅 Glad you liked the film.
I just could not get interested in an origin story for Willy Wonka. Had they gone a different route, I was just thinking that Jeremy Renner us probably the best actor I can think of that could do the character justice. But, I know, Hollywood needs their A-listers
I blame Timothee Chalame he gives it's best to every role he gets and it shows
This would not be the first film where a director had a certain actor in mind for the lead role. There have been times when a writer writes a movie specifically for a particular actor.
I LOVED IT!!!! And so very happy they created a story that actually matches the magic of the original movie. I say thank you to everyone who had a hand in bringing this movie to all of us.
I know right it had the same magic as the original, it was fantastic!
Willy Wonka always frightened me. Kinda like Freddy Kruger, Jason, and that silent picture Dracula guy, they make you see at the library during Halloween. Ahhhhhh! Nice sweater, though. I think it was the reindeers that got me through this review. soooo.... Thanks for that, and Merry Christmas. =].
Merry Christmas.
sorry but I saw the preview and it went against everything in the story. None of the stuff shown in preview match the book or movies.
Um, there has been 2 good movies but not Hollywood movies, Japanese movies:
Studio Ghibli's Hayaō Miyazaki's The Boy And The Heron (anime)
Toho's Godzilla Minus One or Gōjira Mainasu Wan (ゴジラ-1.0マイナスワン) and this latest Godzilla is a stunning masterpiece with a budget equal to $15 and leagues better looking than anything Marvel or Lucasfilm for 4 years. Its the same director/writer/VFX, he did that much of the movie. It is a human story, with great challenged characters you want to see persevere and Godzilla is scary in this movie mostly because of the characters. There is genuine tension, and all about 10 days before Hiroshima- June 1947. Post war japan rebuilding than Godzilla takes them from 0 to -1.
See both films. Leagues better than Wonka. Saw it Saturday then went and bought a ticket for Godzilla for a 3rd time since release. I have not seen a new movie in theater more than once since The Dark Knight in August 2008, a LONG time ago. Godzilla Minus One and The Boy And The Heron are the best films I've seen for over a decade.
Its nonsensical nonsense for the sake of nonsense alone, bereft of the wholesome values for which the origional was a vehicle... "Good" is a stretch.
Does it open up to a sequel?
Totally agree! I thought the same. So much fun . Love it!
Lauren, how are the knuckles? I noticed you smack them on the microphone stand sometimes. You must have regular bruises lol.
Dahl also wrote Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.....love to see that turned into a movie....
This was Wonka as he was first coming into the role of being a chocolate maker. Sure, he was naive and bright-eyed, but that's the point. He was new to the chocolate scene and would more than likely grow to be more cynical as he aged, especially when his own employees would steal his recipes. Anyone saying Timothy wasn't dark or crazy enough doesn't realize that people dont start out like that. It takes steps, gradually moving further and further into that role, so in a couple of decades, you could clearly see a difference between Wonka then and now.
Sounds like a Wonka version of the Tucker car story except with a happy ending.
I loved this movie. I laughed a lot, I teared up at a few parts, and it felt like an overall heartfelt wholesome family movie. A much needed surprise.
Wonka looks like a fun time, I might see it sometimes after Christmas.
She was paid to write a positive review! Do your research people! The only ppl that say the movie is tolerable are 5 year olds
I've always believed and still do, not all prequels are bad.
Revenge of the Sith was absolutely AMAZING!
We had a Wonka that looked like that throwing himself off outside some woman and childs house in England 😡
I saw it last night and I really enjoyed it. I don't think it did anything ground breaking or spectacular - it was just a solid movie, that knew what it was about and accomplished it's purpose. Charming, light, with small touches of emotional moments. I also thought it did a decent job as a prequel to the Gene Wilder version. To me it makes sense that Chalamet's Wonka doesn't have that "edge". We see this boyish optimism that he starts out with and it's conceivable that some of that cynicism grows over time and contributes to him becoming a recluse later on.
I agree, I’m glad they didn’t make it dark like the original. Wonka was kind of sadistic.
Lauren ... you're ... french??
Now I finally understand why you say "quantamania" like that. It all makes sense now.
nice. Oz The Great & Powerful was a good prequel too.
underrated
I just saw it today and found it delightful! It was so colorful and funny! 😊 Soooooo pleased with it! It was simple, and that’s why it was so beautiful.
We need a shirt that says "Papa Chen"
I haven’t watched the movie but from this review , it sounds kinda like The greatest showman which I enjoyed.
Pronouncing Timothée Chalamet’s name the right way is like pronouncing La Croix the way it’s supposed to be pronounced... 🥲😅
What a delight that there is actually a fun and decent movie out! It feels like so many movies now are just complete messes.
I loved this movie. This to me was a tell on government which was a big call back to the real story behind the gene wilder 1970’s version. Unlike the Johnny Depp version which was just a creepy version of Willie wonka.
You want a Chalamet house cat? New breed.
the movie seems pretty divisive, but for good reasons.
I’m too traumatized by what they make lately . I’m not watching anything, not spending my money, they don’t deserve my time. Nope. Watching old movies at home
I love papa chen ❤
Thats refreshing thanks for letting us know. I think the budgets should still be smaller as this movie will need to break 300-400 million to be profitable.
it just passed 500 mill globally a few days ago so it’s good 😂
@@sammysoppy3361 good word of mouth.
I was excited for it the moment the trailer came out but then I just saw everyone else shit on it so I shut up about it and acted like a sheep but… I guess that’s why I gotta trust my own instinct!
I didn't see the movie, but some darker tones could work if done right. However I think the wholesome aspect is actually more in line with the gene wilder story. If you watched that classic, the whole purpose of the golden ticket was to find someone with a good heart who loves the chocolate to take over because he was losing faith in people. It was a desperate last ditch effort to find someone as passionate as he was. I think he became a little deranged in his older years close to his retirement.
Everyone seems to have lowered their standards for what makes something great. This movie was atrocious. The character of Wonka was bland and the music was generic AF. This doesn’t hold a candle to the original in any way. It may entertain a kid for a couple hours but every child in the theater we were in almost fell asleep.
8:32 "somebody more acomplished playing a weirdo".... Ezra Miller?
Ezra Miller was WB’s original choice for “Wonka”. It was the producer, who knew him from “Fantastic Beasts”, who refused to cast him. Which, in hindsight, saved this movie. As Timothee Chalamet can actually act, and has not been arrested for assaulting women.
Eric Cartman should have played Wonka 😂
Saw this with my daughters it was just ok. My little one enjoyed it but still loves the original better. She is 5. The classic remains the best wait for this movie on streaming.
Still haven't seen Godzilla Minus One I see...
I was surprised my 25 y/o sister really wants to see this film.
I would like your opinion on Godzill Minus one. Good movie about community and country.
Timothy Chalamet wasn't miscast. How can people miss the physical resemblance to Gene Wilder? Both of them represent the delightful virtue of a chocolate maker who doesn't overindulge in their own product.
Good time to buy Disney stock. Cant see it go down much further
