2023 Mahindra Scorpio review: New 6-seat SUV rises to Ford Everest 4WD challenge in off-road test

  • It's been a long time since Indian car brand Mahindra launched an all-new model in Australia, but the 2023 Mahindra Scorpio is finally here. It's an adventure-focused 'large' SUV that's zeroing in on the new Ford Everest, updated Isuzu MU-X and soon-to-be-replaced Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
    So that it can be taken seriously, the six-seat Scorpio has a tough body-on-frame, ladder-frame chassis and a versatile four-wheel-drive (4WD) system that should imbue it with genuine off-road chops. And these off-road credentials are helped by its 129kW/400Nm turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.
    But as CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Andrew Chesterton finds out in this expert review, the Scorpion 4x4 is missing one key safety feature that you'd expect to be in any all-new model launched in Australia in 2023. And its absence could be a dealbreaker for some buyers.

    Scorpios are the one of the popular family cars here in Nepal. They can go extreme off-roads, which of course is needed in my country and is good on road. Can't wait to see the scorpio-n in the snaky hilly roads of Nepal.

      U don't know anything
      First of all Scorpio N is not the old Scorpio that was on sell. This particular Scorpio N has scored 5 stars in Global NCAP. If u don't believe me then go and search for it. And secondly the old generation Scorpio didn't had any airbags and during a collision the driver's head and neck could break due to no airbags in the front that's why it had got 0 stars. But the body structure, even of the old model was said to be stable, only the airbag was a problem. The new Scorpio Classic has 2 airbags and the same platform as the old gen, the old gen had a stable body and no airbags but the new one has airbags with stable body and if tested this time then it would bring good numbers. And once again Scorpio N is different than the Classic and has 5 star NCAP rating

    Mahindra pickups helped to build the Indian small scale industry economy. Played a huge role in connecting rural to urban India. U can find the pickup in remotest of village, on the himalaya, on beaches, on rain forest, on deserts of India. Scorpio's are tanks. They are Indian land cruisers. The reason why it feels small to you is because it is supposed to sit below their flagship SUV the XUV 700. The Scorpio N was made for a different audience and the higher big luxury SUV seeks will be drawn to 700... @@thesagarmahapatra FCA's problem was the design, for which they sued and won. But, Mahindra cannot bring any other passenger cars to US because they simply wouldn't sell. They need to offer a V6 at the least to meet the American demand. A V6 Scorpio and Xuv 700 would bring some attention to Mahindra in the US market.

      @thesagarmahapatra Před rokem +10

      @@reubinthomas Design isn't the only issue. Mahindra changed the design on the Roxor yet jeep or FCA sued them again. The issue runs deeper. Also when it comes to passenger vehicles, I'm sure they can get American attention without a V6 since many companies are downsizing and Mahindra is eyeing EVs as well. 200 bhp from their GDis should be good enough for the American market at $25k or so. How does one carry luggage with the third row folded forward when off-roading? The luggage will be thrown from one side to the other on rough terrain. There should be a suitable way to secure the luggage in such a situation.

    Mahindra used to sell the Scorpio back in Malaysia 12-13 years ago. The dealership pulled out due to lack of sales although its almost 40% cheaper than a toyota or nissan. Refinement and lack of safety features was a major concern back then. Wonder how much improved is the current version ?

    Mahindra is a mainstay here in India. They have made Jeeps under license since 1947. So their 4WD DNA is definitely way better than for example, Fiat SpA or Stellantis if you will. The Scorpio featured here in this video, is a very capable modern all rounder which is very capable both on and off the road. A great family tourer. And the Mahindra vehicles are both strong and reliable. I have owned many Mahindras over many years and indeed own one right now as well.

      The reason they sell in india is because cars from germany or japan are taxed pretty high ,No one would drive a scorpio if a fortuner or everest was priced a couple of lakhs more.

    • @sublimefermion2205
      @sublimefermion2205 Před rokem +15

      @@ragn786 Not really. All German and Japanese cars made in India are taxed just like Mahindra, if they're in the same segment. German cars like Taigun still can't beat sales of Korean, Japanese or Indian rivals. Only an idiot will believe it is okay to drop import duties when you already have quite mature and fast growing car market & industry.

    Very fair review, I am personally not worried about safety features like lane change assst, ect, none of my friends are using it on their German cars, it has the essentials like ABS and airbags. The stop/start function is no good. But overall the car is very relaxed on the open road, big and powerful enough and more economical than the Japanese competitors. And the sound system is excellent for the open road, better than about any system in a Toyota. I am an owner of the N and have owned over 70 different cars, this car doesn’t stand back for any in general use.
