2023 Mahindra Scorpio review: New 6-seat SUV rises to Ford Everest 4WD challenge in off-road test
Vložit
- čas přidán 28. 06. 2024
- It's been a long time since Indian car brand Mahindra launched an all-new model in Australia, but the 2023 Mahindra Scorpio is finally here. It's an adventure-focused 'large' SUV that's zeroing in on the new Ford Everest, updated Isuzu MU-X and soon-to-be-replaced Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
So that it can be taken seriously, the six-seat Scorpio has a tough body-on-frame, ladder-frame chassis and a versatile four-wheel-drive (4WD) system that should imbue it with genuine off-road chops. And these off-road credentials are helped by its 129kW/400Nm turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.
But as CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Andrew Chesterton finds out in this expert review, the Scorpion 4x4 is missing one key safety feature that you'd expect to be in any all-new model launched in Australia in 2023. And its absence could be a dealbreaker for some buyers.

Scorpios are the one of the popular family cars here in Nepal. They can go extreme off-roads, which of course is needed in my country and is good on road. Can't wait to see the scorpio-n in the snaky hilly roads of Nepal.
Feels good to see that Indian SUVs r doing very well in international market. For city use XUV 700 might be a better choice. But when it's for off-roading Scorpio N is good.
@@riddhisiddhi186 you can’t afford this car . You are just driving alto😂😂.
@@riddhisiddhi186abdual real id a aao😊😂😅
U don't know anything
First of all Scorpio N is not the old Scorpio that was on sell. This particular Scorpio N has scored 5 stars in Global NCAP. If u don't believe me then go and search for it. And secondly the old generation Scorpio didn't had any airbags and during a collision the driver's head and neck could break due to no airbags in the front that's why it had got 0 stars. But the body structure, even of the old model was said to be stable, only the airbag was a problem. The new Scorpio Classic has 2 airbags and the same platform as the old gen, the old gen had a stable body and no airbags but the new one has airbags with stable body and if tested this time then it would bring good numbers. And once again Scorpio N is different than the Classic and has 5 star NCAP rating
@Riddhi Siddhi dont lie i know u dont even own a alto 800😂
Its not actuallydoing well in the world markets, but atleast they sell a few numbers unlike tata
Mahindra pickups helped to build the Indian small scale industry economy. Played a huge role in connecting rural to urban India. U can find the pickup in remotest of village, on the himalaya, on beaches, on rain forest, on deserts of India. Scorpio's are tanks. They are Indian land cruisers. Known for toughness, reliability and easy maintenance.
That's Mahindra bolero you can find Avery terrain in India 😅
Original Peter Mama😂
Adich viduraaruu😂
@@goutamraoshab3777 Correct as well.
Scorpio has 0 stars 😂
@@gtvideos8037 it's whole new model
The reason why it feels small to you is because it is supposed to sit below their flagship SUV the XUV 700. The Scorpio N was made for a different audience and the higher big luxury SUV seeks will be drawn to 700... I have seen many on road in India and especially Indians love this brand as it's robust and reliable off late.
Xuv is better
Don't agree, both vehicles serve completely different purpose and audience. It doesn't mean one product is superior or inferior to another.
@@arinmech1 😆it is. As Mahindra flag ship is Xuv 700..and flagship means the best..
its small coz its a small suv in international market
Small because in 5he international market its small
I learned to respect Mahindra jeeps for their toughness during many visits to India. Never expected to see a Mahindra 4wd that you could drive comfortably in an Australian city. Chinese brands may have a battle on their hands.
i wish Mahindra would bring this to US.
They can't. Jeep doesn't want Mahindra in the US, They're busy suing them for building OG Jeeps like Thar better than FCA.
@@thesagarmahapatra FCA's problem was the design, for which they sued and won. But, Mahindra cannot bring any other passenger cars to US because they simply wouldn't sell. They need to offer a V6 at the least to meet the American demand. A V6 Scorpio and Xuv 700 would bring some attention to Mahindra in the US market.
@@reubinthomas Design isn't the only issue. Mahindra changed the design on the Roxor yet jeep or FCA sued them again. The issue runs deeper. Also when it comes to passenger vehicles, I'm sure they can get American attention without a V6 since many companies are downsizing and Mahindra is eyeing EVs as well. 200 bhp from their GDis should be good enough for the American market at $25k or so. I do agree that a V6 would bring them undue attention though.
@@reubinthomas Yeah you are right there. Scorpio as is would be woefully underpowered for US market and not to mention, it will have to pass the stringent safety standards, which I am fairly confident will require a pretty much ground up re design of the scorpio at which point its not even worth competing. US car market is tough and demanding.
@@reubinthomas yup correctly said Mahindra have problem with THAR only other version can be sold but they are not making it for American requirements + plus building a brand from scratch in that market will be very hard because there's too much competition and i don't think any one would buy a car of totally new brand in US
Proud Indian here.
Drove 6,00,000 km on my Scorpio never had any issue 😊
So you made a round trip between Earth and Moon 🎉
@@insearchoffreedom4933 technically yes. Still muching miles , thanks to God never had any engine issues as of now , just the regular checkup and on time oil changes. Also one thing i noticed is always clean the inlet manifold every 50 k kms it surely helped. Also geting a mileage of 15 kmpl in higlways.

There must b other prouds who probably drove 12 15 lakh km , & that too with irregular servicings. Untouched engine/transmission...
9:57 Look at the ride quality here on gravel roads. Looks brilliant.
The design is elegant but also simple , great looking car.
Mahindra is a gem in India. Check out their Thar series you’ll go crazy. I love mahindra. Living permanently in Australia and seeing an Indian car makes me feel happy ❤. Give it a few years, they’ll drive you crazy. They are new to Australian soil.
Cant afford new but an ex demo in a years time would be a great upgrade from our current 2016 Mahindra XUV 500 W8 which we've had ZERO issues with. Only wish it had 4WD like this Scorpio. Just came back from doing the Bloomfield track in FNQ with ours with a 2 inch lift and mud tyres so that 4WD box would have made the drive a lot easier
Umm…there is a xuv 500 awd in w12 variant
You will love the interiors and tech upgrades.
Buy xuv 700 if available that's better
You should definitely go for XUV 700. Better power and fuel efficiency
He is looking in for a proper off-road vehicle,
xuv700 is not a hardcore suv as scorpio.
One should not simply go for a vehicle by just reading the specs or looks.
Both has 4wd i do agree but that doesn't mean that both will be equal in terms of ability
Pride of India would be understatement ...for mahindra
Because ever country has few places where the road trails and mountain ranges are worst for car drives
Whats being tested there is relaiability and ruggedness and tougness of any car
By Indian standards Both Tata and Mahindra are mostly preffered as it satisfies all the requirements with the advantage of being Cheap
Doing more for less makes u Better ....and thats something Mahindra has taken seriously
Tata is a thing too❤
The engine and suspension is upgraded for the Australian market and safety is also upgraded.
But I think there is full digital coloured instrument cluster in India, whereas in Australia there is a black and white regular instrument cluster..
Now I know why the waiting period for one of these is more than 6 months in India.
😂😂😂😂
😅😂
You're wrong its 1 year 😂
6months??? 1yr😂bro
Not for this one!
Anyone can get scorpio N in a day. It's the scorpio classic S11 for which you'll have to wait for 4-6 months. And all the hype is for and was because of the design and looks which scorpio classic S11 has.
It’s not available in India for immediate delivery, has a waiting period of 6-12 months, depending on the variant.
We need this car in Ireland as well.
I think that the Mahindra XUV 700 is also a Badass SUV
What depth in the review 👏 Didnt keep it limited to features but talked about what the car really offers practically and who is the real intended buyer.
Our Indian reviewers should learn this aspect.
Love from Assam 🇮🇳🙏
I love Australia 😍❤️
as an indian, i could not contain my excitement seeing this launched in other countries. i wish mahindra could start taking other countries as much as they do for india only than we will start to see indian branded vehicles a lot
witch camera are you using ? i want to know please
Wow 😳 never even remember Mahindra Autos, but very nice review on the Scipio, I love the design, it's gorgeous, I ll buy one. In a heartbeat, sweet Interior, but the looks, it wows me, plus the reviewer was convincing, & calm & rate it well, well done..
Actually the hype of scorpio was not because of this particular model it all started with the original design of Scorpio from 2021.
Still the hype is about Scorpio classic S11 not Scorpio N.
very few people are buying Scorpio N. It's all about the CLASSIC VERSION S11. With upgraded looks and design it's even better!
Mahindra is King of SUVs , only it it could mass produce like TATAs , i would love to see TATA and Mahendra doing something togather
It may miss out on some important safety gear, but I'd still look at it . Comfortable, practical , reliable etc Mahindra have made fairly substatntial improvements to the range here over the last few yrs. Ive already driven it & was pretty impressed overall. Its way better than people think is & is likely to be a far better vehicle compared to most Chinese offerings . If you are prepared to forgo some safety gear, then this capable vehicle will more than meet expectations.

Does Indian varient have rear diff lock ?
Brake-locking differential (BLD) for the front and a mechanical-locking differential (MLD) at the rear.
But in Australian model it comes with automatic rear-diff.
Looks good needs to made available everywhere
Love the review
Proud on Mahindra
have you reviewed XUV700 AX diesel-with ADAS?
FYI: Scorpio N base model in india cost rupees 16 lacks..ex showroom price. The 1997 cc Petrol engine generates a power of 200bhp@5000rpm and a torque of 370Nm@1750-3000rpm. The 2198 cc Diesel engine generates a power of 172.45bhp@3500rpm and a torque of 370Nm@1500-3000rpm.
To be honest, I doubt many people will actually go for this SUV since people in Australia can actually afford Everest and land cruisers... But all in all, if it's good it will find its place anyways.
A day will come 🤝

Promising. Cheers for the review! My uncle in India has a circa 2009 Scorpio. It's 2.5 Tonnes (vs my 2009 Hilux @ 1.5T). They're well built and rugged vehicles with a great feature set for India. Here in Oz, now, they're a bit behind as mentioned in the review, despite the weight disparity being nullified (both at ~2T). I think for this vehicle to be a consideration they must implement stronger safety features to make it suitable for young or elderly families.
3.6 Roentgen.

@@listofbucketliststraveland9281
Jeep wrangler is majorly an off-road vehicle and not for families. And I guess you’r comparing Toyota Fortuner price and Jeep wrangler price from India, because they are 2-3 times their original price only in India, due to tax system in India.
Toyota fortuner price in Australia is around $50k and Scorpio N around $45k, so there is a difference but it is not like in India.

We proud to be an Indian
Looks quite tidy, perhaps a little underwhelming but as a value for money family car, it seems spot on.
It's not tiny, don't be fooled by the camera. It's the perfect sized SUV and a little bigger than Range Rover Evoque and KIA Seltos. This SUV is also incredibly easy to park unlike Everest and the bigger SUV's
@@JohnJohn-pm9wq we have a 200 and a 2500, so they’re kinda small for what we do but yes, as a smaller easier to use thing, I like it.
@@TheTripleDubya Any SUV that's bigger than a Scorpio is a large SUV that's suitable for long family trips. Scorpio is wider and taller toyota Fortuner and only 13mm shorter in length
I read that the short, or shorter than usual, wheelbase was a design decision influenced by the indian market, to introduce an SUV with maximised maneuverability and cornering capability, coupled with a wider chassis to reduce roll, in order to adapt to the high traffic, tight-turn conditions of indian roads.
Feels so good ❤❤

Can you review the TATA Safari XZ+ please?
Mahindra used to sell the Scorpio back in Malaysia 12-13 years ago. The dealership pulled out due to lack of sales although its almost 40% cheaper than a toyota or nissan. Refinement and lack of safety features was a major concern back then. Wonder how much improved is the current version ?

It received a five star global NCAP safety rating.
Wish they could update the Mahindra Pikup .
Amazing Car... I just booked it
Absolutely amazing
Mahindra is a mainstay here in India. They have made Jeeps under license since 1947. So their 4WD DNA is definitely way better than for example, Fiat SpA or Stellantis if you will. The Scorpio featured here in this video, is a very capable modern all rounder which is very capable both on and off the road. A great family tourer. And the Mahindra vehicles are both strong and reliable. I have owned many Mahindras over many years and indeed own one right now as well.
The reason they sell in india is because cars from germany or japan are taxed pretty high ,No one would drive a scorpio if a fortuner or everest was priced a couple of lakhs more.
@@ragn786 Not really. All German and Japanese cars made in India are taxed just like Mahindra, if they're in the same segment. German cars like Taigun still can't beat sales of Korean, Japanese or Indian rivals. Only an idiot will believe it is okay to drop import duties when you already have quite mature and fast growing car market & industry.
Worthy of being proud of I would think, honest reliable vehicles that are improving at a reasonable pace all things considered.

Very fair review, I am personally not worried about safety features like lane change assst, ect, none of my friends are using it on their German cars, it has the essentials like ABS and airbags. The stop/start function is no good. But overall the car is very relaxed on the open road, big and powerful enough and more economical than the Japanese competitors. And the sound system is excellent for the open road, better than about any system in a Toyota.
