2023 Mahindra Scorpio-N Review: I DID NOT expect this... RIP Toyota Prado?

  • The Mahindra Scorpio-N is a Toyota LandCruiser Prado at a 50% discount…
This 6 seat Indian SUV provides proper off-road credentials, decent diesel performance, and a strangely luxurious interior to boot - but does that mean you should spend $45,000 on one? Lets talk about that in todays review!

For me, this rig is the clear standout in its segment. The value proposition, is outstanding. $45,000 vs AT LEAST $60-70k for an equivalent "premium" (sarcasm) option. The money you'd save is the equivalent of AT LEAST ten years of fuel. The Mahindra is the clear winner - lest you want to play "the Aussie" and hand over your hard earned to Japanese car company executives and shareholders.

@@shaun1900 in my view, the "safety equipment" you espouse are false positives - lane keep assist etc. I personally don't care for them, or feel they're necessary, or believe they increase safety. It'll depreciate faster than your king of mediocrity (wank) chariot (not looking at you, Toyota), but it's starting from a much lower cost base, so actual depreciation figures will likely be similar. If you don't have a dealer in your area, don't buy - sure. And the gremlins, they're not nearly deal breakers. Let's return to the value proposition - $45k vs AT LEAST $60k (more like $70k to $80k) for something in the same spec range. It's still a no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

@@shaun1900 great retort ... Good value does not equate to "cheap". Poor value does. I could make the argument that more expensive vehicles that don't deliver value are "cheap". Cheap simply means that something is of poor value. Toyota Hilux, 300 series etc are "cheap". A vehicle which is half or a third of the price, which does the same thing .... that's a premium vehicle.

Scorpio N stands for Scorpio New (I think), cuz it's not some gimmicky face lift or some cosmetically beautified version of the previously outgoing model, it's in fact a massive full fledged upgrade and a brand new SUV compared to what was being offered in it's previous generation. The older one is now sold under the brand Scorpio Classic (cuz it's still the top selling SUV and probably one of the top 10 cars sold in the rural parts across India). I have like 8 different Scorpio Ns within my circle of friends and they are all young buyers (under 35). Btw thanx a ton for such a great review. Car reviewers are like crime reporting journalists; the more knowledgeable, neutral and unbiased they are, the more authentic and usable information they can provide the end users with.

The Mahindra Scorpio-N should sell well in Australia based on the price alone. Not sure about Service dealer Network. When other models and better tech arrive, you'll have a best selling brand. There's also a big Indian diaspora in Australia. They'll also be a factor. I realise that Mahindra is one of the best selling vehicle in this segment in India, a nation roughly 48 times the population of Australia, albeit not a first world country. All cars no matter the make, have had to gain acceptance in Australia. Thanks Matt and jacob. Keep them coming.

India Mahindra should learn from Korea Hyundai and Kia. They should use Japan engine at the initial stage and as they progress in engine development only then the right to install their own engine. Mahindra 4x4 SUV and pick up truck enter our country for the 1st time and that will was the last it enter our market. Why? it was the worst Brand of vehicle with the worst engine we ever experience in our life. and that particular "feature" is an engine killer , most wear and tear happens when the engine is thermally cycled and during the first few seconds of starting. it is same as turning your florescent light on and off too often. if you do not let it warm up it will fail sooner. if the stop is for less than 2 3 mins there is no reason to turn the engine off. yes it will save fuel but that savings is always lesser than the price of new engine.
