Oh boy...
We've spent 3 months with our long-term Mahindra Scorpio (aka Scorpio-N) and it's been a wild ride. Up until ANCAP, Australia's safety body, gave the Scorpio a 0-Star ANCAP safety rating, we were chuffed with the Scorpio. But now, we're just... confused. You see it also scored a 5-star safety rating in the Global NCAP testing program. So is the Mahindra Scorpio unsafe? Is it a bad buy? Well, not everything is as it seems here. Let's talk about that and our long-term review impressions for today's cheap 4x4 review!

There are news in India where Scorpio n front suspension is breaking without any cause and Mahindra is blaming the driver that he was doing 120 km speed. There are multiple bad quality parts in Mahindra cars. Bad engineering bad quality check
Interesting video 👍

Global ncap of uk give 5 star safety rating to this car, Australian ncap give 0 star. What the hell are going on? Are you kidding us? Australian ncap want exit mahindra cars from Australia that's why they gave such bad safety rating to this car.
idk about the australian tuned suspension but the indian tuned suspension was so stiff you could feel irregularities on the road which i didnt feel in other cars. plus after test driving the scorpio n i got car sickness.
@@sanjugartan just like 2 airbags are standard in india in australia adas is a standard. if an australian or american manufacturer came to india with a car which has no airbags it would get a 0 star rating the blame is on mahindra for not including adas which is clearly a standard like seatbelts or airbags in australia.
the problem with "crash prevention" safety tech like ADAS is that in markets like India/nepal they can actually cause more accidents due to the nature of traffic
But they can make it country specific for markets like australia

Correct! But then they should not launch the India version abroad. It's a strategic mistake. Period.
No because xuv700 gets this tech
The lack of automated 'driver aids' is a big plus for me.
Same here. And we have the Scorpio N Z4 Diesel automatic here in India and the traffic here, even the ADAS can't judge itself.
That's what I thought .

Nothing like fighting with the lane keep because it keeps trying to veer you into traffic.
Agreed. We have two Volvos, one is MY12 (usually my car) and the other is MY15 (usually my wife’s). I find the newer car’s ’driver aids’ far more intrusive and generally turn some of them off every time.
Basically that means every car before 2017 is zero stars.

I actually prefer not to have all those gizmos. Nothing is more infuriating than constant chiming of the overspeed, driver alert and fighting with lane keeping assistance. ANCAP rating is there to prevent newcomers getting a slice of the Ford/Toyota market share. Five star rating in my book.

They should have an overall safety rating which includes the accident prevention rating.
However, they should also include a crash safety rating which doesn't consider the ADAS but only how it protects the passengers.
There are safety issues with this machine. Google team bhp Scorpio N accident to know more. Mahindra is not transparent and not performing safety recall
The problem with the Scorpio's safety rating is because ANCAP needed to make a public spectacle of cars that didnt conform to thier whims, the car's crashworthiness is sound, its not easy to get 5 stars in GNACAP because they actually crash cars to see if the persons inside will make it out in one peice and not on gimmicks like ADAS.
So basically my mum's 2012 Hyundai Elantra is a zero ancap too lol
If it was tested by todays protocols, probably!
That would be a -3 rating
Basically a tank with no adas is also zero Star
As of today-ish, a 2024 Volvo XC60 (among others) has no safety rating purely because it ‘expires’. Always worth reading more into a safety rating like the guys say in the video.

ADAS (Arrogant Driver Assistance Systems), for those who are so full of self importance that they think it’s quite ok to update apps and text whilst driving. ANCAP puts far to much emphasis on systems that are ultimately the responsibility of the driver, not the car.

Yes, very good review. I have take. My 3rd row seats out, its a 5 minute job, the the boot is massive. But I only use the 7 seats vey much never. But what a nice economical car for its size and price. And you can go off road. I have towed a 130” kg caravan for 1400 km over 3 days in 35 degrees celcius, what a pleasure, doing 110 kph, fuel consumption 12,7l/100 km. Excellent
What can be done with the massive and intrusive mounting points for the 3rd row seats? They're a real problem for me!
The poor storage such as a single cupholder and central bin would require a rethink of the cabin
The zero ANCAP safety rating is a bad joke, especially for such a strong, well-engineered vehicle! The distractions and unreliability of all the mandatory electronic gizmos may well be contributing to the road toll, especially if drivers start relying on them!
Meanwhile, the Mahindra Pikup is selling new in 2024 without any side bags but scores 3 from ANCAP! Maybe farmer's lives don't matter?
So many commercial vehicles were allowed to be sold in Australia with only a driver's airbag and no side or head bags.
@@johnpostle502 ridiculous. Fortunately jn S Africa we dont have all the regulations and many people rightly so or not is switching off the so called safety things like lane change etc. Maybe its not as safe as the ANCAP people think. And I believe that safety systems that can be switched off because it is no proven safety factor, compared to ABS and airbags who cant be switched off as this is a real built in safety aspects. So how can they rate a car on safety if the systems can be used at will, then it isnt a safety factor…….. they havent made it compulsory.
The boot isnt flat yes, its however not a problem to me as I normally have quite a load and the flatness of the boot is not playing a role for me.
If people were to follow ANCAP’s current rating system😂 They would be misled into believing many new model vehicles are intrinsically safer than some older higher quality cars, of which some score higher than new cars (for the identical test situations), but loose points for the lack of active driver aids.

Nice review. Captain's chairs is not new to Australia. In the late 70s I was driving an old Chrysler by Chrysler with a 360 motor and equipped with thick arm rests for both hands for driver and front passenger. When you state Captain Chairs, do you mean it swivels around? My 2010 ten year old Nissan Elgrand Highway Star had those back in 2020. Also RV Motor homes have them. Keep up the great reviews.
If ANCAP developed a rating system for hotels, they would decide a hotel gets maximum of zero stars if it doesn't have fast wifi. Thats how random and bizarre their requirements are. So this car is 5 star international, 4 star just a year ago, but now zero star because someone at ANCAP decided auto-mated breaking - which is more likely to make you stop when you want to quickly pull out.
To me it sounds like Toyota, Ford, Mitsubishi and Isuzu may have had some influence on ANCAP when they found out the selling price. Maybe the Gov't thought they'd get less sales tax too if it was half the price of a Toyota.
I'm really starting to think that maybe a longer version of this could be a good idea to have both the seating capacity and cargo capacity in one. Of course it doesn't really solve the packaging issues with the seats, but I still think there could be interest in it.
It already is at nearly 4700mm long, anything bigger will suck as an SUV as longer the wheelbase, worser it's off-roading capability. Maybe it should just ditch the 3rd row and be a 4/5 seater proper SUV.
@@DigitalVisitant Also agree!
No different with the rear door if it opens upwards Nissan patrol Y62 or the 300 series cruiser for example, you still have to drive in if you intend loading the cargo area up. Not sure people reporting on these, the tank 300, the Prado with spare wheel on rear door etc, any of them you need to leave space to either open upwards or outwards 🤷♂️🤷♂️

Wait what , it couldn’t be simpler
Putting the price aside
The XUV is more city focused with a unibody construction ( more sedan like ) , so handles better and the Scorpio is a proper ladder on frame that can handle some off road but with the added downside of worse handling and more body roll

Matt. I'm 51 years old and have been licenced since just after my 18th birthday. We put too much reliance on safety tech and take away the responsibility we have as drivers. My first car was a 1970 HT kingswood, all wheel drum brakes and 3 on the tree manual. I'm still alive. I care more about crash tests than I do about what safety tech a car has. Recently the road toll is increasing, yet cars have more tech. People have forgotten how to actually drive a car.
This “wrap them up in cottonwool” thinking also put us in lockdowns for our own protection. I prefer fewer autonomous safety features as they themselves become the distracting force when driving.
Well I am excited because hopefully a S/HScopio will drop dramatically in value and I can find one at a GOOD price😂
Personally I feel while launching a new product Mahindra should have future proofed the car. A zero rating looks really bad, they knew at the time of launch that they snuck it in just before rules changed. I hope they fix it soon.
So basically my 2013 SsangYong Rexton is a zero ancap too dang it
It got 5 Stars on the Global NCAP which is like the de-facto safety standard globally. That's all that should matter imo.
Agreed, get rid of ANCAP, we don't build cars here anymore, the testing programs in other countries are more than sufficient.
It's a huge waste of taxpayers money, only continued because of ego and self importance, as if we know more about safety than others.
ANCAP is a lot better than GNCAP. In fact, all local NCAPS are better than GNCAP.
@@debasisghadai3633
So what?
ANCAP already just copies and pastes Euro NCAP data for cars that they can't test themselves, they may as well use it and other crash testing NCAPS, instead of sucking up $16 million dollars of taxpayers money over the next 5 years.
The average cost per test is $780,000, which is paid by the manufacturer who, naturally, passes that cost on to the consumer.

ANCAP ratings would help set guidelines for almost all manufacturers to ensure their car passes them on almost majority of the parameters this would be taken care of specially when you are trying to make inroads in a country/market. I understand the rationale behind changing goal posts(somewhat necessary as well) but what I am surprised about is the lack of communication between the manufacturer and the agency. Also mapping a car zero stars because it faults on a set of parameters requires a deeper analysis and further study. My personal understanding of the situation is that for a car to score a zero stars is because the car is absolutely a safety hazard which isnt the case here and hence ANCAP ratings are biased towards few manufacturers.

If further modernized, this may potentially rival the XUV 700. When the Scorpio was initially introduced in India in 2002, it stood as Mahindra's premier SUV offering. However, with the advent of the XUV 500 (previous generation of XUV 700), it carved its own niche in the market. Unless Mahindra can establish a clearer distinction between the two, they might prefer maintaining the current positioning.

I have trouble choosing a car because too many have not made the effort to put the column stalks the right way around for right hand drive. Can some one make this uniform for car makers to get their vehicles into this country, accident do happen when your attention is not on the road and steering the vehicle. Arm rests were in the cars before your time and so was the go pedal.
My Mahindra Scorpio N (5 months old) has just been towed into Centurion Service Centre. It died on the Highway. Roadside Assist App didn't work. 9th time that the car has gone back to the dealership in 3 months currently 268 hours at the dealership.
😂well, there's something inf4ont of me....WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!? (Australian crashes for the lack of ADAS) (Indian presses slightly on the brake and avoids the obstacle and goes on with their life)
The crash prevention tech in my previous Honda Civic (emergency brakes) and current Stinger's (Lane assist) have almost gotten me into near accidents. I keep my lane assist off because it's so intrusive. Anyways I do think people should have the option to have it, I guess.
*brakes.....
I took a tank 300 for a test drive and the lane keep assist could have broken my thumbs with the violent way it works. I also drove an xc90 and the way it will brake when either reversing or crossing traffic from detecting cars that are pretty far away is so annoying. So with all this autonomous garbage on cars, driving tests should basically be made obsolete. Licenses for everyone!!!

Australia is well known to be a nanny state where everything is over regulated, so if you guys want to drive in autonomous bubble wrapped vehicles it's your prerogative. Vehicles are not only practical, functional and safe, they also evoke emotion and feelings. No one remembers how good safety features were, we remember how the vehicle performed and made you feel. I don't understand how you can develop your own safety rating that gives a vehicle 0 stars compared to the 5 stars of the global rating. Who are you kowtowing to....Chinese, Japanese, insurance companies, etc😂
So basically it doesn’t have stuff for idiots who’d rather update Facebook, or text, then concentrate on driving. Oh that and the ‘can you get out if it ends up under water’ test? Seriously, ANCAP have completely lost the plot. If it’s structurally designed to protect the occupants, ABS, Stability Control, traction control, effective airbags, and how about roll over (which I understand ANCAP don’t even bother testing), then great.
My ten year old Grand Scenic does not have some of this ANCAP s'tuff' nor does my Piaggio scooter!!!! And we won't talk about my four Landrover series III's that basically smash anything that they hit!!!!!
ANCAP is pretty much biased. Earlier they rate inferior cars as 5 stars, you may check. Also I request ANCAP to collide their 5 star rated car with the scorpio N and evaluate again.😂
So now that u have visited India, u must be aware of the fact that Indian Roads are Savage. The ADAS systems are useless here. My friend almost got rear ended because his Honda City which has ADAS braked Hard on it's own as a response to bump on the road. I just wanna say that these cars are made keeping Indian Market in Mind. Even the cruise controls, forget adaptive, Even on Highways the car keeps going from 100 - 10 kmps to 100 again thanks to traffic and maniacs. Lastly the Cup holders. Indian Roads are so trash, a coffee cannot survive without spilling, cup holders are basically key or small things storage space here in India. Btw love your videos.

I hate that this steriotype exists. there are religios people who woul like others to think India is all about cows, but for many its just a cattle. Its just one way political parties in india get their votes(by asking people from other casts and religion to not eat beef). AS AN iNDIAN i wanted to clear the air about this topic.
In india you can also get in 2 litre turbo petrol the same engine as in xuv700
I'm waiting for the 4Wd Van. Swivel Captain chairs.
Love to watch your videos specially of indian cars❤
Thanks for the honest review here.
Been contemplating one of these or a Tank 300 and seems like the tank might be the better option.
I've got the tank, petrol - ultra. I had no great expectations but must admit it has surprised me on the upside. Very capable and comfortable vehicle..
Thank you! Goodluck for whichever you choose, both are awesome 😊
@@andyh5666 Have you had any issues with the hands free microphone?
@@spotty1666 Funnily yes. mostly google misundersanding me at times.
Do you know about the incident where a Scorpio N Owner LOST his RIGHT LEG bcuz the whole left WHEEL ASSEMBLY came off on the Expressway due to Quality Control issues??💀💀
So essentially if Mahindra vehicles keep the driver and occupants safe in the unfortunate event of a crash, that is not enough or right and Mahindra needs to think about the idiot crossing the road in traffic or the chump who crashed in from the opposite end too... Wow this exactly that woke kind of thing isn't it. 🤔
There are safety issues with this machine. Google team bhp Scorpio N accident to know more. Mahindra is not transparent and not performing safety recall
@@babukrishnan4703there are no issues with machine stupid , you don't own one to know
Is that the OEM Mahindra crossbars on the roof rails?
I hate adaptive cruise and lane assist. I turn them off as soon as I can
What star rating did Lady DI merc have??? I think it all depends on the way the crash takes place!!! Sometimes some people just get unlucky. When u fly a Boeing 777 till u land , its ur own risk!😊 good review anyway!
We checked out this car, and the big problem for me is the third-row seats and how they're designed. It's like they were added as an afterthought and doesn't really vibe well with the rest of the car.
It’s best to just get the third row removed if it’s not needed
@@rahulpatti1288 We took that into account. The primary concern arises when we need to utilize our car for transporting items, and even the second row poses challenges. The manufacturer has fallen short in the realm of interior ergonomics. Despite its overall brilliance, the interior is a notable drawback. The design near the driver's front row is excellent, but having just one cupholder seems like an oversight. If they had reworked the interior, including the seat setup and folding mechanism, this car could have enjoyed greater sales success.
Totally agree, as a family of 4, the rear seat takes up way too much space, very hard to pack for family trips with luggage, the XUV700 has a way better systems
@@vintagetintrader1062you have 4 comfortable seats, pull the third row out and be content, duh!
Plenty of room.
Here's another tip for free, put a small consul fridge in between rear seat, kids enjoy cold drinks and eats.
Euro NCAP is widely recognized as one of the strictest and most comprehensive crash test programs. It evaluates the safety performance of vehicles sold in Europe and provides star ratings based on various crash tests and safety features.
No indian automakers have ratings from strict rating agency Euro NCAP AND ANCAP
pretty sure fca had something to do with this and probably removed 1-2 stars it would have gotten without active protection.
at 20:21 the camoflaged car in front of the thar is it me or its looking like a bigger scorpio???
Gotta love the Vegan interior! ❤️
There a is a weird noise comes when releasing the accelerator pedal at more than 80km/hour speed in z8l auto diesel. If any one is getting this please share your thoughts
If you don't set the high standards with ANCAP, the market is eventually force the rise to meet them. If you don't, they are happy to under perform.
That means almost all cars on the road before 2018 are 0 stars.
22:13 Did he say front of the car is too strong? Is that why the car transfers crash force onto its occupants?
Wow didn't know making cars 'too strong' is also an issue.
@Indianbackpacker is coming to Australia with his mafia Scorpio N
If they put the safety tech on then yes. Although ANCRAP is not to be trusted just ask JC.
Or better ask the owner in India who lost his leg after the car's wheel fell off
The fact that the engineers talk about their car for hours it means they put their heart and souls with the product, favorably it might turns up to be a good product
Compare to any Chinese car, they always talk about how cheap they can produce it and their plan to sale their car in millions, i bet my hair on it its gonna be a bad product.
Love from China!
One only needs to look at the current road toll and accident reports which highlight the failure to the DRIVER's not paying attention or actually driving the car correctly. Relying on Nanny State electronics to warn a driver to drive safely or within the boundaries is a prop for idiots
jaguar, range rover, already indian brand, this car is our beginning wait and see
If you are talking about an AISEN transmission that's a Toyota company transmission which is bloody good.
Aisin 6 speed fitted to many cars and utes including Toyota
@@johnpostle502 my point exactly
I still dont understand how austrialian calling this unsafe. Kindly check some accidents videos of scorpio and u will know how safe Mahindra built cars are. The only issue is it lacks automatic breaking system
Like the one from Pune where the car's wheel says bye bye on a smooth highway and the driver loses his leg??
@@jalexrosh that was a sharp metal barricade. Only bullet proof vechiles can standy by that kind of object. Mostly all 5 star car will fail.

The Ancap star rating based on crash prevention is nonsense. What I as a consumer wants to know is “are my children safe when I drive into a tree” and to be honest, in this thing, no they aren’t. BUT I wouldn’t buy a family car with a 3 star rating. (I actually wouldn’t buy one without aeb, but thats beside the point) I want to know is how does it crash? Not can it avoid one.
