In this episode, we continue restoring the salvageable parts from the 316i's engine. I show you the new block and head that I stripped out of another engine I picked up for £50, which had covered 135k miles instead of the 270k miles like the original engine.
There's one more episode after this before the big rebuild. That episode will take place in a machine shop and show things like honing and skimming of the block and head.

Just a recommendation, at 13:10 when using (hole punch?) put something soft underneath like wood or leather so you don't dull the punch.
We use a high-durometer rubber plate at work.
you can also use a plastic cutting board from Ikea for a few euro/pounds/dollars
My man, invest in an ultra sonic cleaner. It will pay for itself in one build
The one particular thing he does for rebuilds I find interesting is the cleaning and re-Zincing the fastening hardware. That's really cool process
Tip: at around 13:17 you are punching the holes with the gasket paper on the vise. This will definitely blunt your punch! Use wood or better yet a piece of Ertalon to put under the paper. Ertalon is hard enough to allow a good cut with 1-2 knocks AND soft enough to let the sharp edge go slightly through without damaging it!
Not sure why you don't have more likes on this comment... seen lots of mistakes in this video but.... aleast it'll look nice....
Good point Robert! It's like using a glass cutting board when slicing veggies. The glass will actually dull your knife over time because glass is harder than steel.
Great video, but I think you put the fan clutch backwards :)
I did! haha.. All sorted now. Cheers!
Damn that’s lookin good. Impressive how seamlessly everything fits back together.
Beautiful job! It's most likely a lot more work to film this way, but this style of video takes me back to some of your original work. Close-ups, slow panning; I love it.
It’s the small details that count and take a long time to perfect but you make it look easy I envy that
I was hoping you hadn't forgotten the E30. I appreciate old Mercedes but I LOVE late 20th century old BMWs.
Didnt expect to be this early
Cheers dude!
There's good potential for upgrades in the intake while you're in there!
Nice Work! As always, impressive.
Thanks Patrick!
Beautiful work! I love that warm grey color you use!
Looking perfect already!
Great work mate looks stunning.
Love your attention to details.👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Dan!
внимание к деталям? он вентилятор собрал неправильно
Awesome attention to detail! Congrats on the hard work and keep it up
Great Editing and content once again.

Love the touring chassis, waiting for the next clip)
Very satisfying to watch.
At £50, you got a bargain there! Good job as always!
Dá gosto de ver uma restauração desse nível! 👏👏
Thank u so much. My m40 needs this as soon as I gt some time. Very good restore.u make it so easy n knowing I hv the same engine 💯👌😁

Nice work again.
Well done again nice looking job budd 👍
Great video 👍
Man I love you so much l like this job its very nice good luck with your job
Nor sure what’s more satisfactory: unmasking or sandblasting 😊. Awesome job
Amazing job, it's a joy to watch you work! Are there any videos of the 325s in the near future?
Love your videos. Have you seen all these new dry ice cleaning systems? They might be worthwhile to look at for future projects where you might not want to repaint something.
Wow i Love it a very very good Job Love it ❤️👍👍❤️
Beautiful
Very nice...👍.
Nice!!next part please)))
Marvellous
This is terrific content and I'm very jealous of the space you have! Where are the videos continuing the build? I can't seem to find them for this engine?
Awesome video, like usual. One thing i did notice, i think you've mounted the fan differently to how it was.
Will the dirt removal contribute to advanced weight reduction? Anyways great work
Not really. It might shed a few ounces but nothng really worth celebrating.
Nice
Great job as usual!!! Do you have ideas on what could be your next project after you finish this?
11:44 will use this on my future e30
Beautiful work!
Cool 😎
We need update for this engine video's
Empressive job dude. The moment when u forgot to put the intake manifold gasket... You are doing great work I also love to restore cars I maintain my car by my own.... And thanks for uploading the video early as I demand in previous video.... Love from Pakistan...
dry ice blasting ftw
Press like before watching ))
please send me the link to part 5 and 6 of the rest of this restoration . it has been very helpful and this has been the most complete e30 m40 316i engine rebuild iv found on CZcams and has been extremely detailed
.
Well there goes my sleep again 😅👌🏻
De 10 👏🏻👏🏻,pero cuando nos muestras un coche terminado
Nice job, it looks really good. Have you ever considered soda blasting the throttle body, I think it would look as good as the rest of the assembly if you did.
THe correct way to restore the manifold is vapor blasting. Dry blasting is creating pores in the casting.
I love watching these videos but it’s crazy to see how not easy bmw designed everything lmao
Jejejeje
Wow that Emmanuel guy sure has a lot of cars
Hi! Nice video as always. I am curious about one thing. Do you need to do some kind of paperwork to get that "new" engine in your car and be streatable?
It seems like these days you have a more practical outlook about parts which should be restored and which ones should just be replaced.
Hello man, really nice restoration, grats! I'd like to ask you something: what kinda of passivating agent did you use after zinc electroplating? And what electrolite for zinc? Thanks in andvance for the reply!
Nice video !! One quenstion what gap diid you set between then throttle plate and the housing thank you in advance !!!
No thread locker on the fan clutch screws? Brave!
Great job! Was there any need to clean the tubes, on which the injectors sit, from the inside? If so, how did/would you do it?
Project is coming along quite well brother. Anyway you could help me find one of those gasket tools kits? I do restorations as well and that would do wonders
There's some really good tips in the comments, Restore It! We can all learn from other people who have a little more experience than us.
Me: No way he can restore this
Restore It: Hold my engine
I think I could honestly just watch a love camera feed of your workshop haha :) great work as always
Also I'd be interested after blasting and wire wheeling the gasket surfaces how far out of tolerance they are fromm flat
Or how much sand it ingested
So, I think it's was good idea save the old engine
awesome content, i see you use titan lube. are they any good i see them here by us and want to change from castrol to them on my e46?
what's the color on the intake manifold? is it the stock color? great video!
hi what material did u use to make the gasket for throttle body and where did you order those injectors
this require mechanical skills to restore this..god job bro..keep it up.
Yay!!!!
Enjoy man!
You should get one of those laser cutters for gaskets, as many as you use it ought to pay for itself in a short time.
Have you priced a laser cutter for this application? Equipment like that tends to be extremely pricey. Which types of gaskets will it work with? Not all gaskets are the same. A laser cutter might not be a practical tool for every application. I am pretty sure that unless he is replacing a large number of these, and by sheer coincidence they all happen to be compatible with this laser cutter, if I were rebuilding just one or two cars at a time, buying an oem gasket is far more cost effective than buying some high tech and expensive equipment that will not see much use in a small volume workshop
When are the newer episodes coming out ? Is the car complete, and the engine? Great series and detail.
The car is currently as you see it in the episodes. The latest episode is being filmed as I type this. Cheers!
Have you not thought about vapour blasting the alloy parts ?
Do you need something else (different pressure regulator/fuel pump, ECU update ) when using M50/M52 injectors ?
Have you the link also for the primer that you use?
17:47 I was waiting for the scene to turn red and start trembling @Geoffrey Croker!
How do you dispose of the plating solution once it is no longer fit for use?
W Polsce do Piaskarki wrzucamy nawet taki wentylator i Plastikowi nic się nie dzieje ;) a wgl..Polecam piaskarkę syfonową tą małą to se można hihi
Is that light colour (I’m colourblind) the correct one for the manifold? I thought it would be silver or mat black. Nice work though.
What's about the end of the project, remounting everything in the engine bay?
It would be perfect if you use vapor blasting instead of sand blasting. But good job guys
Another great episode! Love those in depth restoration and attation for detail! One little heads up. We have had an engine gone, because of some little particals that where left inside the inlet manifold. The only way to get them out, is by dipping them in a ultrasonic cleaner. Would be a shame to have your engine blow up after al this hard work of yours! But other than that, keep it up! 💪
👍
Bro? Did you sand blast the injectors o-ring mating surface?
Is there rest of these videos or just 4 parts
Where's the rest of this series?
Part 5 please
hey, when episode 5 will come out?
When will you publish final episode of e30 m40?
Man I can’t find part 5 and 6. Are they out?
