  • Well, the Ruger American Compact 9mm is back from Ruger, and here is how it went.
    Now that it's back, do you think I will keep it or trade it in and call it a day?

    I certainly do appreciate companies like Ruger that stand rock solid behind their products. I do however appreciate firearms that function as they should right out of the box, consistently and with endurance.
    I do like Ruger firearms and have owned many through the years but I wish they would spend a bit more time on R&D before releasing a model. To be fair they are certainly not the only arms maker that could benefit from a bit more test and evaluation.
    Nice vid, thanks.

    I may be a bit late in comments. But I bought a Ruger American compact 45 a few months ago and the outside spring came uncaptured, and the pistol was unusable. I contacted Ruger and got a new guide rod assy sent to me free of charge. No issues now. Love Ruger's customer service. I own many of their products and have no complaints.

    Have the Ruger SR45 where both magazines wouldn't keep the slide open and had extraction issues. Using a sand paper on the follower and small file on the magazine to remove any burrs and lightly pulling on the coils fixed my problem. Had a lot of issues with my Ruger SR45 and magazines, which now works without any issues.

    I have an American Compact, and I have put at least 500 rounds through it. I love this gun. The only ammo I have had problems with is the Winchester white box. Everything else has worked flawlessly. Also to note my PC Carbine does not like the Winchester either. In my opinion it's that crappy white box ammo giving you trouble. Great video, bud.

      Thank you. Overall this is a nice gun, this particular one may have just had some "tolerance stacking" issues that made it more ornery.

  • @TonyThompson1981
    @TonyThompson1981 Před 5 lety +8

    I think unfortunately you just got a bad one.
    My American Compact, after getting the spring replaced (also got the new barrel), runs flawlessly. And I'm a cheap SOB. I shoot garbage steel case stuff and any other cheap ammo I can find.
    Clean, dirty, it don't matter. Runs flawlessly.

    • @HammerStriker
      @HammerStriker  Před 5 lety +1

      That sometimes happens, it can be tolerance stacking or one component just too far out of spec.

  • @davids5956

    Ruger changed the spring design in the 12 round magazine. You can see the difference. Ruger will send the springs to you if you have the older springs in your other 12 round mags. The issue with the old spring was an occasional failure to push up the slide stop after firing the last round.

    • @KazBlack44
      @KazBlack44 Před 4 lety +1

      I noticed if you leave the 12 round magazine loaded for awhile, the spring would compress. You could actually stretch the spring, and it would work again, at least until it compressed again. I didn't know that Ruger updated the spring design, so good to know. I've been making due with the 10 rounders, since they don't have this issue (and I can find 'em cheaper, to boot.)

    Thanks for keeping us up to speed here. I got both Americans as soon as the got in at the gun shop.
    The full size have over 700 rounds no issues. The Compact has around 900 rounds no issues except the 12 round mags do not consistently hold open on last round. In fact, it will rarely hold open with the 12 rounders and Ruger has replaced 3 of them. Excellent customer service. Polite, professional and prompt.

    I have a Ruger American full size in 45 acp that I bought when they first came out. I had problems with failure to feed (not going into full battery) at random when shooting it, then I'd have to tap on the back of the slide to get it into full battery. It would do it with ball ammo and with hollow points, and it was more common with the hollow points. I thought it is probably a problem with the barrel ramp and I sent it in and they said it was a magazine issue and replaced the mags. I still had the same problem afterwards, but not as frequent. After shooting it more, the problem seems to have worked its way out.

    • @HammerStriker
      @HammerStriker  Před 5 lety +2

      I am beginning to suspect this gun's design is susceptible to a "Tolerance Stacking" issue where the individual parts may be within tolerance but the spec allows too much flexibility, resulting in parts at opposite ends of the tolerance adding up to a problem. Happily your issue went a way, ours might over time as well.

  • @davids5956
    @davids5956 Před 4 lety +2

    Coincidentally, about a month ago, my RAPc was having failures to extract too. I was using Browning brass FMJ ammo which was being sold very cheap in boxes of 150 rounds. Winchester makes the ammo for Browning. I think maybe the issue is with Winchester ammo. Maybe a batch of bad brass. Other brands work fine.

    Hey H/S! That Ruger is a keeper. It's similar to the FNS 9C in size and capacity with 12 and 17 round mags, which I almost bought years ago. Good carry size pistol, IMHO. Ruger stands behind their products and provides excellent service, as I'm sure you know. Just get some better ammo.

      I do agree that Ruger has excellent customer service. They are responsive, proactive and helpful every time I deal with them (and this was no exception). And I do not think this gun is bad, maybe just a bit picky. The White Box is low-end ammo but the PPQs, Xdms and Glocks around here just gobble it up.

    The 12rd mag that came with my RAPc pretty consistently refuses to lock the slide back after the last round. I’ve “solved” that issue by just leave the 12rd mag at home and only running 17rd mags, which don’t have that problem and fit my hand better anyway.

    I sent my gen 2 lcp in 3 times, similar problems. They replaced it with a new one that works. Sent in a bodyguard twice and p365 as well. If the firearm is sensitive about spec brass ammo, what else are they going to be sensitive about. My 2 cents.

    Hmm.. strange I got my Ruger American about a year ago and have put about 700 rounds through it. Winchester, Remington, federal, Hornady 115 gr to 124 gr. Brass, aluminum, steel, full metal jackets, hollow points and have never had one issue feeding, ejecting or any other problem. Has always shot great right out the box, I love mine however mine is the duty size not the compact. Sounds like it is just a faulty gun.

    The 1st generation Glock had issues mainly with their .40 S&W cal. guns, the SIG P320/P365 1st gen. issues,
    the CZ P100 actually failed due it's problems, American AKs still are developing, on & on.
    Here is some wise advise:
    - Never buy a 1st generation anything - wait for ver. 2.0 (At that time the market has found *"most"* of the 1st generations issues).
    - Don't get a Ruger American due to the issue above.
    - Don't buy from Ruger now, if you need a good reliable gun get a SIG, Glock, HK, Beretta, or S&W (IMO).
    Just saying.
    *EDIT:* Walther is also a top choice over Ruger.

    Just got the gray compact yesterday. NOT very impressed. Well when doing a press check the slide sometimes has to be hit into battery. One of the mags is messed up and I'm missing a mag. Was supposed to come with 3.got 2. The grip modules are both the same. Barrel looks to have a ding at the end. Not sure I even want to shoot it. This same thing happend when I got the SR 45. A few years back. Lite primer strikes and failures. Had to send it back 3 times. Gun came back fixed after that. Sold it immediately because I would never trust it again. The ruger american .45 compact is the 2nd semiautomatic that I've bought from them. Will call them on Tuesday I can assure you I wont send this one back 3 times. Sad thing is I don't have any problems with my glocks, fnh, or any other of my plastic guns. I like ruger and have many of them but this kind of crappy workmanship seems to happen more often now than in the past.

    How does magazine spring tensions effect extraction?

    • @HammerStriker
      @HammerStriker  Před 5 lety

      In theory you would think it would not. However, it can affect how the new cartridge slides into position under the extractor or the spent shell as it begins to extract and interacts with the top round. If there is bounce, it can cause that process to be disrupted and result in the round "jumping the extractor". In this specific case, I don't think the magazine is involved due to the pattern of failure, but the magazine was a legitimate possibility.

    Too many problems, dump it and get something else. Life’s too short to be wasting time with unreliable firearms. I’d much rather have a sr9c over an American 9c if I had to choose a ruger. I hear IWI has a Masada compact coming down the pipeline
