  • Just as video games have become more sophisticated and detailed, so has the music composed for video games, with lush orchestral scores written to fit an individual's gameplay. Correspondent Conor Knighton looks at how the field of video game music has exploded, with symphony concerts of video game music. He also talks with "Old World" composer Christopher Tin, who is among the first to be nominated for a Grammy Award for music written specifically for video games and other interactive media.

I honestly prefer listening to video game music over chart-toppers. They have a sense of atmosphere that not only draws you in, but they can also elicit certain emotions without the need for words. Plus with the addition of leitmotifs for long-running franchises, even new songs can make you feel nostalgic, more so than some movie soundtracks.

@@RyuPhrog mmm I disagree. Classic Halo, Skyrim, yeah sure they got the best vgm soundtracks as far as most people know, but they are certainly not timeless, and without the game they are half as cool. I don't think the Grammys are necessarily for celebrating good music, it's for successful music. If you ever make a vgm soundtrack or get into it, no one cares, and it's not the greatest music ever. It's made to be background music for a game, it's cool and engaging, but I'm impressed by the whole picture, not this one section that thinks they deserve a reward/recognition beyond what they've had so far. I played all those games and I guess halo is fun, but all the other ones, you can keep em lol. Makes you happy, leaves me disappointed so hey, to each their own. I won't admit the title of mastery to this stuff. There isn't going to be another Halo 3, there might be another good elder scrolls game, but I mean it's all aspects of a fantasy. Only master chief is rocking out, while you are him. The music is good. But saying these games are master works? Come on man lol

So many diamonds of video game soundtracks have been released in the last 20 years, that it is such a shame it has taken this much time for them to be recognized.

Good video game music usually sticks with me way more than any other music.
It's probably because it's tied in with an experience. Ultimately lifting the entire experience. And because of that it is more memorable and meaningful than just "a song".
Also, a lot of modern game music is just amazing period. And having that tied into something more to compliment it just makes it better.
Hearing the Deep Stone Lullaby in Destiny 2 made me come to a full stop just to take in the music and environment.
And both Ori games are just absolute perfection.

I feel like the interviewer and writers of this piece are still out of touch with the vast depth of video game music. Not bad examples per se, but there's so much more that could have been said and structured in a way to tell/show someone who knows nothing about the topic what they are potentially missing. But they do get props for including Shadow of the Colossus.
Still so much more that could be mentioned. Take your pick

It’s only now some spots are taking recognition since a few musical pieces are gaining accolades and awards in different spots. Dude everyone talking about the older game composer but literally so many games have such good soundtracks. From AAA games to indie games. Halo, Civilization, Hollow Knight, Persona. Some games from international countries have caught up and surpassed the older games. The music in video games add such depth to the game. Personally, Genshin Impact's OST's have surpassed my expectations for a game especially a gacha game. I would genuinely buy the soundtrack by itself and completely forget about the game if that was an option.
Anyways point is video game music has evolved from it's early days to big hits and long lasting scores. I think anyone born between the 90's and the 00's can recall the Halo them from out of thin air. That was back when CD drives were the main form of storage. Just shows how game soundtracks have been underated for a long while.
