I notice that most of these etiquette rules, not just in dining but in general, actually are practical and not just something to follow to be “proper”. For examples, waving the fork and knife in the air would pose a hazard, putting the utensils back on the mat would be unsanitary, bending down too low can hurt your back (and also would be dangerous if you get too close to the food especially if it’s hot), etc. These are pretty much based on maintaining safety and hygiene.

that's because etiquette was first "invented" so that everyone can feel good when interacting with each other; now people use 'not wanting to seem stuck up' as an excuse to not have proper manners, so they end up being rude and crossing over people's boundaries

Too many restaurants I have been to expect you to keep your dirty cutlery, even when you have not one plate nor extra napkins on the table. I try to always hold onto my bread plate for this reason alone. I feel so comfortable and happy when the restaurant staff remove your plates, silverware on top, and either understand or bring a new set without even asking. A lot of people, staff and diners alike, do not know this; they are simply doing what they think is normal. 🥺🌹🍽 And yes, I am very certain this has only happened in America. I often just ask for new silverware if they try to have my keep it, and sometimes that request is met with hesitation. I think I've always been given a new set, though. 😅🌹🍽

I am not well off or wealthy by any means; I am simply middle class. I never go anywhere fancy to eat because of this but I still use your dining etiquette lessons when I am dining. Things I have noticed is that when I practice dining etiquette, even if the common person or waiter doesn’t understand what I’m doing, I look much more feminine and put together and I’ve noticed that doing these things commands more attention from my date and I get better service from my waiters and waitresses. In France, the etiquette says that fork and knife position in the plate also has a meaning.
Crossing them like you did in the video means you have finished and... didn't enjoy your food 😛. Putting them in parallel means you liked it, and putting them perpendicularly means you would like to have the next dish.
Making an A, means you are having a pause

It would be fun to watch and very educational 🤣.

For the people around us, it is fancy. My kids complain about having to learn to be fancy when no one else does it. My husband learned! He recently went to a business celebratory lunch and his friend/boss leaned in and asked my husband what fork he should start with :)
My mom is Mexican but taught me the basic use of fork and knife as a kid (siblings and dad need etiquette classes!) I later learned the rest on my own. When we were dating, my husband’s family gave me the nickname “la duquesa” the duchess because I use a fork and knife lol.

I love your videos so much, Jamila! I was wondering if you might consider doing an etiquette video on weddings, particularly gift giving, and funerals, especially how to offer condolences. I know that customs can differ from culture to culture, but I find myself uncertain about what to do when I may not know the people getting married or the person whose loved one passed away very well--we're still connected in some way, however, so I would like to know what to do in such situations. Thank you so much for all of the work and love you put into your channel!

In my opinion, I think Hailey was just focusing on entertaining the audience by exaggerating everything and show the non-etiquette way people can enjoy their lives without judgement, I think. She obviously was just having fun

Agree, besides not everyone knows etiquette rules , being a celebrity does not mean one knows the rules too; if one has become a celebrity, or is in the business world , better to learn the rules

I really enjoyed watching this kind of video format, as I could see the "mistake" being made and the proper way of doing it right after. I think it is very easy and nice to learn this way. Thank you

I think I agree with everything, but the soup.
I personally find it more practical to eat the soup with bending my upper body down alittle bit towards so that any drop of soup that may be drop down to the bowl wouldnt dirt my shirt. Thats only my personal opinion, if thats what she said is the good etiquette for eating soup, then let it be;)

Thank you for another educative video. I see a big difference in my manners since I started watching you. I feel like a different person, the better version of myself. What starts to make trouble is other people because now I notice their bad manners a lot. 😄

Thank you so much for this video. It was very helpful. I do have a question. In less formal restaurants where the fish is served with rice on the same plate, is it proper to turn your fork tines up to eat the rice?

I also noticed in the first clip the way she held her fork pointing up in her right hand while trying to use her knife with her left hand, it all looked extremely awkward. Loved this video, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
PS: Quick question. I understand that when eating a "bite size" piece of fish or vegetable, it is easy to bring it to your mouth with the fork facing down. However, would it be correct to eat "smaller pieces" food like rice, ground beef, or even mashed potatoes with your fork facing up? What is the etiquette for these foods?

Why I love to learn table manners and etiquette is that I just want use all the cutlery in the correct way. I just don't want to mess around the well organized table. I don't want to please others but myself.
