- On this episode of Mad Ginger Customs we compression test the 1950 Ford Shoebox Flathead V8 that has been off the road for 50 years. We broke the engine free in a previous video. This time we find out how many cylinders a flatty will run on and we attempt to fix them all!!! We even throw in a carb rebuild. Come along on this emotional ride......and yes, it involves hammers!

I love the old Ford flathead motors, brings back a lot of memories from my yute...
AWESOME!
Sounds like a total pile! LMAO
I love it!
If you need sheet metal, find some old appliances.
Refridgerators, washers, dryers, dish washers, even microwaves!
Of course, there's still a lot of cars out there that are ready to give up their roofs and door skins!
You know... Kias, Hyundais, other Fords... LOL
Thanx for a great vid buddy!
Your wife is a gem for sure!
I never thought about harvesting metal from appliances!!! Yesssss
I'm a hack like you!! We're practically family. I've had two seized flathead four cylinder projects in the last 12 months. One is now a driver and the other will be. I enjoy your methodical process. Not as much as the clean out video, but I still enjoy what you're doing. The thing that still surprises me is the cost of parts on the less popular vehicles I seem drawn to. My floor fabrication is about to begin. Consistent with your thinking, there's no way I'm spending more on new floors than the car is worth. Darn adulting.
Are you doing videos on the floors? I've only seen Puddin's Fab Shop do floors in a shoebox. I'm trying to do research. I can't really afford $1k for all the floor components.
@@madgingercustoms I have no idea how to do video, but who doesn't love Puddin? I'm hoping to just add a lot of frame structure since I don't have a bead roller. I also think I can bang in a channel here and there and call it good. My Dodge is about as rough as your Ford, and I think replacement floors came to nearly $1500 for it. I'm not doing anything stock, so I'm just thinking about structure and I'll wing it from there.
@@aguywithwood9293 I didn't know how to make a video until about a month ago!! Lol
@@madgingercustoms My opinion may not be expert, but you're doing great!
@@madgingercustoms My "similar" car is a 1950 Dodge Meadowbrook and is in considerable worse shape than your. I'm wondering, in the absence of a bead roller etc., what adaptations can be done while maintaining safety and integrity? I'm building a tube frame to replace the structure of the floor. Then possibly wood with a bedliner. Or maybe an old truck bed floor? My finished project should be solid and clearly not a restoration! I'll be interested to see your solutions for your shoebox.
Man that's a sweet old ford I would like to have one like that..good luck fixing on it
Thanks 👍
Ok, here I am STILL !! I'm the guy that was all set to dump you after the 1st video of yours I had ever seen when you introduced this car and talked about an LS swap in it. You came back at me pretty hard, as you should have, and I went back and finished watching that video and subscribed and liked, as I told you then. I told you then I had built the exact same 8BA, doing the 50's hotrod thing with aluminum heads, 2 deuces a lot of chrome and polished aluminum. Rated at only 110 hp, and only 239 cu.in., these are great little engines. You can idle that thing right down so you can count the revolutions watching the crank pulley ! You likely already know, but if you don't, the first Y block introduced in the 1954 cars had the same 239 cu.in. displacement just that 1st year, then went on to 272, 292, 312 etc.. Also I'm a diehard FORD guy anyway, not just a flathead guy, so seeing your fleet just now is even more reason you coaxed me into staying around !! Seeing that International pickup reminds me of the Travelall that I had back in the mid 80's. It had the 392 in it. Ok, I'm done boring you !! Keep up what you're doing and you'll be fine !!
I appreciate you giving me a chance!! I hope you like the stuff moving forward.
Could and sit and watch this Guy all day, he will not give up, go for it Guy
Awesome!
Thanks man!!
Our 51 had a stuck valve after sitting for 30 years. I was lucky and it was only one that was stuck. I replaced the guide and valve and that fixed that particular issue. I did all of that before I ever even dreamed of filming anything so no one got to see any of the debacle of me learning to work on a flathead. That coper coat works. I've re-used head gaskets on a 13-1 motor in my racecar before by spraying them with copper coat, and they didnt leak a bit. Dennis Carpenter has every part you could need for that car. As for anyone screaming at the video for the way you are doing stuff, screw them. This is real world. Not everyone can go out and buy brand new stuff every single time, or have a shop go thru every part every time. When the goal is to make it run, real people do what is necessary to make it run, and that's what I saw here. I do a lot of the same stuff, and it's not stupid if it works.
Excellent work buddy :).
Thanks a lot!
Enjoy the series! I purchased a 1949 Ford Business Coupe in 1968 for $150.00! It had a near perfect body. and a flathead 8.
The only problem I had was it developed a cracked block and would blow water from the exhaust. I brought it to an old time mechanic who said a valve job would resolve the problem. He was wrong. The car was a real head turner in 1968 and I still dream about it to this day. My vote, I'd keep that old motor in the car to preserve history.........
That is also the most economical way to go!
Very enjoyable to watch the old stuff being saved. Historical vehicles needs to be saved and enjoyed. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Such skill, patience and determination has accomplished what many suspected would never happen. You deserve all the success possible.
I'm looking forward to seeing this cruising down the road !
Thank you!!
Entertaining and good job. Keep them coming. Common sense and fun. Thanks!
We have a few stuck flatheads ourselves; here's to hoping for a little of your good luck!
I'm hoping so. Got a bunch more parts on order.
Well done! Love those old Fords. Never listen to the naysayers. The cup is always half full.
I'm cutting it up tonight so hopefully there will be 1/2 of it left!!
I know Nothing , just like watching and Learning ... Great Job !!!
Keep in mind, my way, isn't the right way!!
You may be a ham fisted goober, but you are a likable ham fisted goober. Thanks for the laughs. I bought a 1950 Shoebox in 1967 for $50. I went flying down the road with chicken feathers flying out every window. I left it half way between Tenaha and Dallas on the side of the road when it broke down on me. That soured me on Fords for a long time.
That's an awesome story though!!
Absolutely awesome job guys!!! I still can’t believe it ran on 2 cylinders!! Can’t wait to see the old girl running up close. Awesome job again and can’t wait to see and watch the other project’s in the near future!!
Woohoo!
Want to swing over and run the plasma cutter like a crazy glue sniffer?
you are doing the kind of repairs that where done long before that Ford was ever built so the haters can hate but most backyard repairs lasted long enough to get you across country if thats what you needed . keep at it.
If I fix it better than it's broken is it really that bad? Lol
Yeah, pull that engine and lap the valves. By the size of the cloud in the back yard you have oil in it for sure 😃. Nice job over all👍🙏 Great since of humor.
It was literally full of ATF, kroil oil, WD-40, acetone, and mcr. I'm going to get some cooling in the car and run it longer but the valves seats were definitely beat.
When you first got it to turn, crank and tried to start it sounded like there was little or no compression on cranking. And then it fired up and idled! Got to love a flattie. Not surprised what you found, and glad it came around. On an semi-related note, that '64 F100 looks pretty decent. My dad had a '63 much like it, also a 292/3 sp - I learned to drive a manual in that one.
Yes I love my truck!
I'm enjoying the content. I also appreciate that you are being realistic and recognize it for what it is and aren't planning on dumping a ton of money into it.
You can't dump a ton of money into to something if you don't have any money! Lol. I'm hoping to make most of the sheet metal.
I'm an old guy 80 years old we are not all old Crab's, it's your car , have fun with your new shoes ! Peace out 😎
Good job of getting the flat motor going. I have been building engines for 50 yrs and have used copper-coat more than a few times and it has always worked for me. If it works don't fix it. 😎👍
Thanks!!
I Learned With You! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great job freeing up the valves and getting it running.
If you Stick with the electric fuel pump, put an adjustable pressure gauge and run it around one and a half pounds pressure.
I have mine online and on a switch on my dash .
I run off the original fuel pump but the electric on a switch, is a great vapor lock cure.
Just get it running and rolling and stopping , then , drive it like you stole it
Thanks! I'm throwing some suspension in it now. I need to check out the tank. I'm not sure it's useable.
Way to go Dave you hung in there and took a barely running flat head and made it decent running motor. I also like your carb cleaning set up.
Thanks. It runs better the longer I run it.
Put the work in and you will end up with a great old school classic
We'll keep plugging away as money and time allows. Thanks for watching. Subscribe if you haven't, we'll get back on this in a week or 2
In shop class when I was in high school. All those many years ago ,one of the students brought in his dad's 54 ford and there wasn't a cylinder over 50 psi.but you would swear you start it ,you would swear it run beautiful and sounded great out the exhaust.
Yahooooo ! The old girl will not disappoint. Keep going.
We are full steam ahead!! Hope you're subscribed!
What a great video! That's an amazing result!
Thanks!!
I have faith in your abilities to bring her back to life. I had '53 Ford with the flathead. A great motor! Onward!
I'll try not to let you down!
I'm 73, old enough I guess... headgaskets.... if they are the original ones, they should be copper headgaskets. They if taken care of are very reusable. I put them in a pan and heated the water to make them swell up some and have reused them not once or twice but just many times. I pulled wrenches all my life so do have experience I do believe. The copper headgaskets are hard to come by and if they are not compromised their very good gaskets made for the farmers who did the headgaskets on their ford tractors which shared a similar gasket. One of the nice things about the flatheads was the fact that with Rite Stuff gasket material, and of course the cereal box for intakes. A ball pin hammer and the aforementioned was all the gaskets for the entire engine. I have used the bearings over as well as long as no copper or brass showing in them. The Y block engines had one large problem with not getting oil to the rocker shafts on the top. It was because the cam bearing is not grooved all the way around and so if the bearing ever turned even a little bit, the oil could not get to the top end and through the one rocker bolt that is hollow inside for the oil to come up to the rockers through the heads... I used to buy time on them by making a drill bit that went clear through and down to the cam and redrill it so oil could make it to the top again. You have to make that drill bit almost flat across it so it will make more than just a teeny hole, like a finish bit can make it large enough.. I think they were like a quarter inch diameter drill bits I used. It is not, not the right thing to do but rockers are spendy and do not last long without oil going to them. Short boxes are quite popular, and notching out the frame for bags and a lowering kit is the rage but me, I just like original style stuff. Its yours and make it yours, fuzzy dice on the mirrors and all if its your thing... and yes you have a lovely wife!
Thank you for taking the time to write this amazing comment!!! Thank you for watching our videos!
I love a 50 Ford! I'd love to see it restored. I know it would be a ton of work and cost a pile of money.
Yeah it isn't the right car for a full restore. I'd also have to learn how to paint!!
My brother had A 50 when I was a kid. It had a smitty muffler on it and sounded great.
@@madgingercustoms
First of all, take your wife to a nice restaurant for helping out with the cleaning and opening of the trunk lid. Laying on her stomach in that dusty smelly car deserves compensation ❤. To me, seeing an engine that old come to life is a very rewarding feeling, like music to my ears 👂. Thanks for sharing. 😅
I have to admit, I'm partial to the this old flathead now. Coming back from the dead does earn some devotion!
Nice work. I would have done everything the same way you did, Dave. That's how to prove out whether a 'siezed' engine was decent when it was put away.
Thanks for watching it!
Great job with this! Runs on two cylinders out of eight! The legends of the Ford flathead V8 are true! My Dad had a 1950 Ford convertible with the flathead V8. He had a glass pack muffler on it and loved the sound. He never installed the dual carb setup on it, but that was next on the list. Speedway Motors still sells Ford Flathead V8 performance parts.
I've noticed a large contingency of flathead parts suppliers. They are well loved as a platform. I honestly have taken a liking to this old one as well.
Very glad you stuck with it! That's what makes a great video in my opinion. A 1950 Ford Custom was my first car. Flathead V8 and three on the tree. That was back in the 60's and I loved the car. I sure wish I had kept it... lol I sold it when I joined the Marine Corps though. I still remember the sound of it and how smooth it purred. Yours is in rough shape but I hope you do something with it that you can enjoy and learn from. Thanks for sharing the frustrations and elations of working on an old vehicle. I have been through that many times..
It's been a rollercoaster but we'll get her back on the road.
Keep on keeping on can’t wait for the next update My first car was a 49 with a 6 cylinder I bought it for 20 dollars I was 14 in 1962 had a 50 when I was 16 another 50 when I was 17 both were V8s love the shoeboxes
On rebuilding carburetor's, you need to clean out the passages with carb cleaner then blow them out with an air compressor. I usually soak them in chem dip that is made for cleaning carbs.
Yes that was all done. I usually can't show everything due to time constraints. Thanks!!
Always loved the shoebox Fords. Great job!
Thanks! 👍
Great job! A little intuition working on that engine! You were right about it running. Those flatheads are amazing but not a lot of power. They are fun to drive as they were great on gas mileage.
Yeah it clearly needs a turbo. Lol
Fantastic job so far. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
@@madgingercustoms You’re welcome. I like what you’re doing with the 50.

Keep Up The Great Work 👍 I Enjoy Watching Your Channel ‼️
Thank you!!
@@madgingercustoms Your Very Welcome My Friend! I'm From The Foothills of North Carolina!
I'd like to give you a little bit of good advice that they found out that works. When you put the heads back on again and Trac it down let it run and heat up to normal running temperature then Trac it down again. Then after using it two or three days then Trac the heads again for the third time.
Interesting. So hit it to 70 ft lbs but do it 2 more times afterwards? When I get the gasket set I'll look into that! Thank you.
Actually a 8ba is a robust engine. Love to see you continue with it .
I have so much respect for flatheads now. From seized to running on 8 is incredible
Good job it's going to run good good sounding car keep on keeping on
Thanks
Great video the next take the intake off it’s much easier with the valves and you don’t have to mess with the head gasket. I did a 1950 F1 short bed I took the intake off and it was full of mouse nest and now it runs like a dream love the flathead’s
That's probably the best way. Live and learn I suppose!
Nice running engine for being 73 years old 👌
It does appear to be.
I really like your channel. This was an excellent video. I can see some Mortske influence here and that is a good thing. Looking forward to watching more videos from you. Thanks for the entertainment!
Thank you for the kind words. I watch all the big channels. They all influence me I suppose. Mortske Repair was big on this video. I don't think I would have tried to bang on this valves without watching him do it first!
@@madgingercustoms I was glad to see that you had much better results from banging on those valves than poor Mortske did, LOL!
Did a great job 2 both of u
Love the sound that a flat head makes! Great job on getting it running

I'm sticking with you all the way! Totally enjoy the journey with this old Ford.

Old flatty's are the best !! congrats !

Yes sir!! Hoping to start sheet metal this coming week while we wait for parts.
Well done Ginger, than runs really nice. Shame there`s so little body left, lol.

What a great channel I like the way you keep it simple
We keep it budget, cause we have to!!
I’m really enjoying your content! I haven’t skipped ahead to see how your driveway will valve reseat job has worked out, but if it doesn’t, I imagine that a flathead core alone would be worth what you paid for the car. Add in the crush value and you’re ahead financially. Nice work!
BTW, I think you’re more of a Banksy; Picasso used brushes, not spray cans.
Loving your channel!
Thank you!
Would really like to see you restore the old single spinner. Awesome job mate 👍

Well, we may need the help!!
Dude I really enjoy this type of stuff. It don't have to be a cream puff to be cool. Can't wait to see it cruising down the road with some dice on the rear view mirror, a bobble head dog on the back window shelf and sounding bad ass even if it's not.
I really appreciate this point of view, cause I share it!
Great job getting flat head to run
Congratulations! Flatheads forever!
They don't seem to die!!
ive seen mortske free these up so many times so i know its possible. you did a great job sir. nice vid and great content

I like your hat. Moxie was my favorite soda. That trick with the Cooper spray is old school. My father did it for years.
Love the flathead Fords. If you pull the intake manifold you can see the valve lifters and it will be obvious if the guides dropped
the reason it ran the first place was the car was so happy you bought it that it ran heheh more to come
Maybe I can keep it happy and the sheet metal will cooperate lol
@@madgingercustoms hey just look what you did for the engine so the sheet metal will bow to your will eventually hehe sorry in just had to add that
nice car a show winner in canada i remember my dad working on flattys that people gave up on and he wouldnt spend moneypntill he new he could sell it im 65 and come from a family of 10 kids nice patena lol
I have so much respect for the Flathead now!
Great job man
Thanks!
Dude you are too cool..Jess's truck will be epic video..
Get to working on it
A guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do! I've been making do for all my life. Nothing wrong with that! If you're gonna do a complete rebuild, then you should bore it .30 over with oversize rings and pistons, rebuild the heads and grind the valves, new crank or turned crank with new bearings and seals. Then comes the transmission and rear end including drive shaft, wheel bearings and brakes. W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
I'm thinking about a T5 swap.
Good job !!
Thanks!
Those old fords were known for weak valve springs too.
less talk ,more action ! there ,now are you happy, alittle heckeling!
I love it!! Keep it coming!! Hope you're subscribed.
I promise im not going anywhere, it was worth 600 dollars, to see Jess climb into that trunk not knowing what was in there. The FORD flathead is one of the toughest engines out there, too bad they dont still make them. Dont give up i have dealt with worse.
Sounds good keep it !!!!!
Oh we're keeping it!
Don’t feel bad …
On old stuff like this, I would do the same and have done in the past
Hey that spray lasted many miles in the old days . It worked then so why not now . Its just a flathead . Kinda like a blue flame 6 lol
Good work man! High five ✋
I am not hating you. I am praising you for doing something for preserve an old car. I am not expecting you go spend 5 years making it look like Scott did on his 1960 Plymouth Fury. That's for the next owner, or you if that's what you want to do. There are many you tube people just getting a project running and driving. I would like to see more guys finish cars. There are guys that can take something that someone else made run and finish it. I also like seeing you tube people working together on projects. I've actually done the same thing with the copper spray in the sixties and seventies, not all of us had the money to go buy new parts. Great get er done attitude.

I just used Vice grip garage Shine Juice and it works great
Is that rebadged Poppy's Patina?
@@madgingercustoms yes
Don't know what others are suggesting but I have been around this hobby for a few decades and my input would be the following. $600.00 for a running flathead is a bargain!! Just need to see if this motor transfers any water into the oil or any other "fatal" results like that. Assuming the best, I would suggest keeping the chassis, any interior parts that could be used/sold and any sheetmetal that could be used on another body and shop for another "better" body only or one with no engine that is in MUCH BETTER shape. It takes a lot of time, effort, tools, and money to do all the work this body needs and have the outcome be something you would be proud to own/show. I believe you're far better off with a body that needs a few (literally) patches and just lots more "restoration" than what you have for your first (learning) experience. Any additional money you spend on a better body will be a "wise investment" !!! FWIW, of course. ;o)
Forgot to mention, watch Iron "Marts Garage" for some good flathead input.
Love the editing !!!
Completely understand that. This is not going to be a restoration or show car. I've never been partial to that part of the car world. Drivers is where it's all for me. A little ratty bang around is just fine for me.
