A great tutorial! Very few cars merit $3500 in replacement panels so figuring out an affordable alternative method is really cool
Well, I'm not sure it's a tutorial as I'm not sure it's the right way to do any of it!! It should work though I'd imagine.
I'm no expert, but I think those rockers look great! Good job!
Thank you!
I agree, looks like he doing A G REAT job to me. Im sure not an expert either.
Great that your staying with it. Got my eyes on one in similar shape I may buy. Thanks for inspiring. !!!
Kiddos to your wife for supporting u on this 👍🏻👍🏻
Pick up that car. You can do this!!
I like your channel and your projects because you keep it real and do things that most of us backyard mechanics would do. I'm enjoying these Shoebox videos!
I'm trying to do what most of us regular guys can do. I think if I can do it, most back yard mechanics can too.
Use Rust Converter everywhere; it will make the substrate ready for paint. Agree that this car has had a rough life and it’s not concourse resto material. Clean up, get rid of the rot to make it solid, preserve whatever is there and give it some TLC to make it a runner would be great. The work you’re doing is coming out GREAT.
Thanks!
I'm tuned in to watch you and what YOU want to do, that's the important thing. Anyone can buy a fix, but low budget fixes are more fun and much more rewarding. Your side post tie ons are spot on. Couldn't have got much stronger steel and will be safer than original as well.
Thanks!
Man I can't help myself from telling you how good you are doing looks so good please don't get rid of it
Thanks!! I'm motivated now to get it going.
You mentioned all three of my favourite channels . In the beginning they just tried what looked like a good idea and it worked... just like you are doing . Don't give up. YOU might just be a whole lot of peoples new favourite channel because you can do it and you didn't give up. Thanks for a good video showing how some things can be done without spending a small fortune.
I'll do it on a shoe string budget because that's the only way we can do it!
Some life lessons I can see you already know and I don't need to teach you...Younger women can't resist the allure of curmudgeonly old geezers. Way to go!
Also, I truly enjoyed watching you problem solve your way through this and gained some ideas for my own project. I intend to have some of my final floor skin bolt in for ease of access to the master cylinder and so on.
And finally, you mentioned you hadn't done video for very long. I think your video quality and pace is just great. I'm really impressed with that accomplishment.
Thanks. Honestly I had a friend tutor me on the video editing for a hour or so and I can him when I need help.
And you didn't think you were able to do it you are doing a wonderful job it looks great keep on keeping on
You do the best you can with what you've got and what you can afford, so well done nice job.
Thank you!
Nice Job. I love watching people doing the best they can with what they have
It's all I can do! Maybe some day I'll build something nice lol.
@@madgingercustoms I just started a channel and I'm the same way. Just keep doing what your doing. I wish i could afford to do what what you do.
@@diywgg I'll go hit that subscribe button!!
@@madgingercustoms wow Thank you!!! I really appreciate it
Carl and Brent are both on my favorites to watch.
I've learned a lot watching them. Thanks for watching our video!
Good work. I like what you're doing to this car. Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
Haven't made it through the whole video yet but the heck with those other guys about restoration. I was happy when you got it running and cleaned it out. 😊
Thanks!!
nice!! im going to buy my outers, but seeing how you just made your inners i think ill do that. time to go to HF to get a metal break
The outers are complex if you make them exact. I don't blame you on buying the those. The inners are simple I feel. You can absolutely make those.
@@madgingercustoms Im going to give it a shot. my car wont be FACTORY restored. could careless if its perfect.
learn as you go. never to old to learn.
I'm putting in the effort! Thanks for checking out my video.
I'd be really proud of that rocker panel! Gives me confidence to try it too!
You can absolutely do this. I'm doing most of this for the first time ever. You can too!!
That's awesome I love it I can't wait to see it as you go I'm going to watch every video on the car so don't stop doing what you are doing
So, I just discovered your channel. I think you're doing great!! I've just started cutting the rotten sections of floor out of my '53 Ford. You are inspiring me to forge ahead. I'm looking forward to watching this build. 👍
That's nice to hear. I'm doing a lot of things for the first time in this build. If I can do it, anyone can.
Good job on that rocker. I've had this video saved in my "Watch Later" tab for over a week. I finally watched all of it. I have 3 Tri-Fives with rot that bad, but each one has integrity in the right places to measure for the next car. New floor pans are for the restoration done by the "Next Guy". My job was to save it from the scrapper. You have me hooked. Carry on.
I'm glad to hear you saved them!! Tri-fives are awesome!!
Great job without busting a budget! Awesome to watch!
Thanks!
It's encouraging to watch you do these things with no prior experience. Gives me hope for my own projects. Great content, thanks !
If I can do this, anyone can. I watch a lot of CZcams! This afternoon I watched videos on how to use the English wheel. I'm sure that will be in the next video.
Your doing a fine job. Give yourself more credit for what your doing. Told you before “ momma didn’t raise no quitter “ . Your tackling that metal like a real tin banger. She don’t need to be pretty to go to town she just needs to stay together. Keep up the good work. 👍👍🇨🇦
That's the plan!! Keep moving forward, get it to be a driver!
Here is a tip that might help you out . Put temporary braces in to hold the car together while you cut out the bad metal. It will make the job a lot easier for you. It will make lining up the sheet metal much easier and keep the car straighter .
Thank you for the tutorial. I have an opportunity to get a '50 with very little floor, and NOT looking to restore it. Seeing you do this helps me figure out if I could do this. Thank you!!!
You can do this!! Get that car, get after it!!
nice job. gotta agree with others that low budget repairs still look great and do a nice job. well done
Amazing job on making everything from scratch and being able to see the vision of what it should look like. Awesome work!
Thanks for watching us work!
Looks great. Don't blame ya not putting all the money in it. Looking forward to the next episode. 👍
Appreciate it!
You're doing great. Definitely better than I could've done. I wouldn't have bought 3000 in panels but I don't think most of us would.
The correct panels would be awesome honestly. Just not in the cards for me financially.
@@madgingercustoms no of course not cause us regular folk just ain't got that kind of money to shell out. Especially on a car that's worth less than what it would cost to restore it. But hey maybe when your channel takes off it won't matter.
Great job! I also hate doing body work! Did what I had to when I had too because most of the time I couldn't afford the ready made pieces.
Same boat here. Just doing what I can.
do not give up you are doing great making the panels is the best part doing a old rusty car up again making something out of nothing carry on and do not worry about the haters they can not do what you done
You're doing a great job! Just keep doing what you're doing and make it a fun driver.
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your work online. This is practical information that can be used on projects where one can't source a reproduction panel. I'll be using what I've learned to fabricate rockers on on old Ridgeline. The front door corner ( where it's not distorted by rust) fits great. Nice job.
Thanks for the kind words!! Good luck with your project!
Scott from Cold War Motors is also a metal genius. Thought you did a great job on the rockers very informative 👍
Thanks!
Great job on the rockers but i would add drain holes on the inside panel near the bottom to let the water out . Also another good channel to learn from is Fitzee's Fabrications. Thanks for the tips and encouragement
I watch Fitzee! We also did a review on the same welder and both love it. Thanks for watching our video!
Just did this on a 53, you did great buddy! Dont give up, make sure youre welding clean metal to clean metal. Keep after it!
Thanks man!
I think you’re doing a great job. I did almost the same thing on my ‘49 Oldsmobile. Keep up the great work and let the haters hate!👍
Thank you!!
I suggest that you watch some videos from Carter auto restyling. He is instructive and has a warped sense of humor. He is also a genius at sheet metal with common tools.
I'll take a look at his channels! Thanks
nice job money dosent make a car a man like you dose keep it up i ll keep watching
Great work dude! “BLACK OUT” it is! ☠️
You got it!!
Just keep cutting and welding I like it
Don’t worry about what others think or say They can leave if they want 👍
There is so much more cutting coming up!
@@madgingercustoms excellent 👏
Getting there !!
Hey man, i know you say you don't restore, but these rockers look pretty damn good. You can restore a car without spending thousands of dollars on sheetmetal, but obviously it takes some skill. Anyway, you are saving a car few would save in its condition, and you don't have to fully restore a car to save it if you ask me. Good work, keep it up.
Thank you sir!!
Hi Dave, Just want to say hi and let you know that i enjoy your videos and your style of comments you make. Keep up the great work and look forward on watching this channel grow.
Thanks Greg!!
i would say you learned quite a lot and even more about yourself your wife is right stop doubting yourself you did such a great job on that rocker if you went back in time Ford would hire you mainly because your quality is better than theirs lol kep-p up the good work love the videos
Lol thanks! See me at Ford just blasting cars together lol.
@@madgingercustoms heheh loved your reply but with quality control at ford at an all time low you would be blasting more than cars together
The rocker’s look good this car is a lost cause but it’s cool to see you getting it back to usable and have fun with it. If you would be thinking about doing a full on restoration on that I would refer you to a psychiatrist. Keep up the good work it’s fun watching your videos.
Yeah, it's long past a full resto. We are just doing what we can.
GREAT JOB, keep it up, lots of fun to watch, keep going.
Thanks!!
Looks great !
Nice job on the rocker panel, you do GREAT work, me I can't weld and don't have a garage so I use galvanized sheet metal and pop rivets.
That works just fine! We do what we can.
This is exactly the kind of work I like to do. I am not interested in full resto, I wanna drive an old car!
Loving this project, the learning process and the candid effort. Nice job splicing in the time lapse with the live action too!
Thanks for watching it!!
Nice job on the rockers. I've got a similar, or worse, job to do on my 55.
Those pig tails can be used like a filler rod when welding wire isn't quite thick enough to fill the hole !
Ohhhhhh I like that idea!
Looks great Dave, you wanna do the cab corners on my truck next?? Lol
When I'm done with this car..... So maybe never but maybe in the summer? IDK
Love the channel! Just fix it enough to enjoy it!
Thanks!!
Looks good 👍
Thanks!
Well done keep up the good work.
Thanks!!
Fantastic job. Just a note... Billet builds and Street Rodder magazine are dead. You are the real deal true to the Roots of rodding.
.. using clever solutions
Build it to a rat rod cruiser low buck car. You are right path
That's the plan! Thanks
This is a great approach. The big failing with a lot of those cable tv car restoration shows is "the budget problem", by which i mean they have huge unrealistic production budgets for each vehicle they do - dropping in crate motors left and right, custom body work, repainting, lift kifs, crazy suspension, making a show car. That stuff is great if you have a huge budget to throw at your car, but they never really show you how to do anything. Frankly, if I had $80k - $100k to drop on a vehicle build, i d just buy one rather than struggle to get an old heap going. All that to say that i wholeheartedly appreciate and approve of the thrifty approach embraced in this video. Keep it coming!
Thanks for the comment. That means a lot to us.
Thanks for the comment. That means a lot to us.
Fantastic!
Looks awesome, nice job
That's looking great. Keep going, love the build.
Pretty nice fabrication work with pretty basic tools. It's not a resto but it is a solid patina hot rod now, and that's way better than going in the crusher. I'm sure you can make good (enough) patch panels for the doors, quarters, fenders and then you have something. Anxious to see Episode XIV: We paint the shoebox matte kinda dark blue with a $29 Harbor Freight gun. Maybe outside in the wind, maybe not. Flatheads Forever.
It's funny you mention the Harbor freight paint gun........I bought one!! Lol
Im no expert, but i think the hot ginger should learn this too
Oh she will. It was 20 degrees in the garage. She isn't interested in being that cold. I'm fat, I don't mind.
Lookin' good DAD. Hehehe!
I'll bring my "daughter" back out to weld all these panels together! Lol
I'm a poor man. And I like the way you do thing. What you're gonna afford to do is all you can do
This is how we do mainly everything. I'm a low budget channel and I feel most people operate like we do. Thanks for watching!
Great job ! Keep it up !
G'day my friend!! I'll be doing similar stuff on my beetle later in the week haha 😄 😅!!
I'm subscribed! Can't wait to see it!
@@madgingercustoms I think my floors are decent but plenty of other rust to sort hahahaha before I start the repainting process... loved this video man!! You said earlier your will it run videos seem to do well. What about the buying / looking around for new projects?? They seem to be my most popular ones!! However I haven't done a proper will it run video yet hopefully soon when I sell these 2 cars I got 2 classics I wanna get my hands on sitting in a barn back of no where... couple of Isuzu Bellets
@@Brooksyscarrestorations I have 2 more will it start vehicles lined up. They are both vehicles that friends have that they inherited or they left to sit when they had kids.
@@madgingercustoms Sounds good mate... im up for all content FYI!! :-)
If you are interested I have a pair of outer rockers that I purchased some 30 yrs. ago and never used .
Wow, what do you need for them and can you ship them?
super job mate . keep it up the old girl will be fair rat rod
Thanks
Good job so far. I agree, Brent oh Halfass Customs can turn a pile of rust in to a hotrod PDQ. He is good!
He's like a metal sorcerer.
A car like this, you don't buy every piece.
You practice your welding and fabrication skills! LOL
Of course you have thick skin, you live in Connecticut! 😜
16:47 That's why you need roadside refrigderators! (dryers too!) LOL
I would use that curly stuff as hair on a skullpture! 😁
Have you heard of Rat-Rod Bob Builds?
He takes literal pieces of rust and makes hot-rods out of them! LOL
Thanx for a great vid buddy!
Yeah I watch Rat Rod Bob. He builds some cool stuff. And yeah CT is like the armpit of the US.
@@madgingercustoms I say that all the time!
And boy, you ain't kiddin'! LMAO
Good job.
Thanks
I think you should keep the car I think if you wanted to struggle with it for a while you could restore it don't have to be the most perfect thing in the world but you have some pretty good chops
Thanks!
If I was you I would just put the peaces that you cut out and just put it back together as cheap as you can with out breaking the bank you are doing just fine so keep on keeping on and do the best you can win I was just a little guy My dad had One and I love that car it was a 50 Ford to dore post and he re did his on the cheap and was really nice he kept the flat head V8 engine in and he drove it every wear he went just wanted to share that little bit of memorie with you he is no longer with us but I have really good memories of the car
If you restored this car you would have much more time and money into it than it would ever be worth. Make it into a rat rod runner, something to have some fun in, the flathead V8 is an amazing engine which is well worth the effort to use it. Give the car some bracing, good brakes and drive the crap out of it. I thought Ginger was your granddaughter!
That's the plan. Nice to see you guys are all of similar mindset moving forward!
the magic of watching someone......you take this "pos" rust bucket, and turn it into a running, driving "pos" with a little less rust. and doing it on a shoe box budget..... see what i did there?? a little play on words. give it a minute you'll chuckle...as a side note, you do have skills you just never needed them to do what your doing now. so see you next time. stay well
Thanks so much!
Looks like a good job to me, who said you should restore the old box, shoot I always thought you was going to make a hot rod out of it
A lot of the Shoebox purists came out in the comments and were really looking for a restore. Street rod is more my speed.
I think its hilarious that you're trying to pretend that your daughter is your wife.....just to make yourself look younger!😂 Love your channel, keep doing exactly what you want to do. Its cool and is more like what 90% of us can afford.
More than one person who has commented on previous videos thought we were father/daughter! 🤣🤣
It's been a couple of years, but I had pretty good luck with Vevor customer support when I needed a new gear for my roller. Also, you really want to overdue it a bit when it comes to greasing/lubing it up.
I did contact them with no reply. I tried on their website and on Amazon where I bought it. I did find that KAKA in Georgia offers the same unit and I ordered gears from them. I'm hoping they fit or I'll just weld them on!!
I love watching this because i know almost nothing about this type of work so I'm learning a lot, or at least something. Curious what you do about the frame if it's eaten up the way some of the other panels are? I would gladly kick in to raise some money so you can do more with this. Maybe setup a patreon or one of those super thanks deals.
The frame is surprising good honestly. If it wasn't, at this point, I'll just cut it the rot and patch as needed.
Ehh rocker shmocker....just tack some angle iron in am I right??? loving this series man. keep it up. Who else squints when her welds?
Thanks!
Just patch it make a runner that’s good enough !!!
Make me some piggies out of that corkscrew scrap!
Pick out a design. We'll use the plasma table.
Any dumb lazy bunghole with a big trust fund can sit and write checks all day, but the end result would be meaningless. You are taking the road less traveled and testing your own resourcefulness and creativity to do what my grandpa used to call "take what you have and make what you need" just to be willing to step up to the plate and attempt something like this is cool in itself and worthy of respect.
Bob Dylan said "you get older, and you start having hopes for other people besides yourself. That's happening to me. Shoebox Fords are on my short list of all time favorite cars. I don't have to own one to be happy that soon another flathead shoebox will be returning to the land of the living.
What you're doing is the kind of action and motivation that made us the best country that ever existed. Just keep up the good work and for God's sake don't listen to the idiots and let them get you discouraged. If they can drag you down they'll only laugh at you.
You are doing just fine.
My hat is off to you.
Stay the course.
Thanks for the inspiration. It really means a lot.
@@madgingercustoms Look at it this way. Jay Leno has massive bucks to spend, but even with all his money, and access to the best talent in the business, he still goes out to the garage, twists the wrenches and gets his hands dirty. His money isn't what makes him a good guy or a bad guy , it's his love of the hobby and his willingness to put in some labor and occasionally scrub some knuckles. His results speak for themselves, and so will yours.
Thank you.
Thanks
Try drilling holes and using rosette welds to emulate factlry spot welds. Will save you time. Use seam sealer when youre done, nobody will ever know
That was the plan originally. I've seen other people do that. If either panel was usable I would have drilled out the spots and rewelded like that. Thanks!!
Good job
Proof is in pudding. You're making progress on the cheap. Ask Dan about nomad parts lol
Oh, I love his channel. I loved him just building the door he needs and making his own window regulators!
Hey, I'm back again, and the best part ? My like was #69 !! Anyway, yeah you're way more courageous than I am. Sheet metal work is something I've never been good at so I avoid it. But you made it look kinda easy. So ya know what ? I think next time I'm confronted with body work--------I'm still not gonna do it !!🤨 I'm glad you're staying on this project. It'll be a cool cruise night car that you and Jess can go get icecream in. Funny thing is a lot of people wouldn't know how to drive that 3-in-the-tree deal !! Ummm....where is the new shop welder girl by the way ? Plenty of experience for her coming up soon. You can bend the stuff up and she can weld it in. Actually you might be sleeping in that thing tonight after divulging her age. But she does look really good, so get her out there.
Jess is certainly interested in getting done welding done on this car. It was in the 20's in the garage. I don't mind the cold, but I have insulation. She can't work when it's that cold.
@@madgingercustoms I have "insulation" too, but my fingers go numb and burn when it's that cold.
I like it
Thanks!!
yessss
I wouldn't put that much in it .I would piece it back together and make structurally sound as I could. Maybe put a little money in that old flathead would make a cool old ratrod !!!
I need to sort that flathead out. Still need all the gaskets. Thinking about a 5 speed swap for it.
@@madgingercustoms nice work on that rocker.
What you said was right on the money. I have built rigs for years using metal from the hood or top of a car, what ever I could find and just tack it into place. A rocker panel is a great place to start fixing a rig up and who looks at the bottom at a small car meet where every walk of life comes out to show what they found and some claim to have fixed up regardless of the fact that all they did was use some bedliner to spray on and cover their mistakes from the original guys trying to make something from a pile of rat crap. I do think just changing subjects a bit that your wife and my ex might be related as vampires never age they say and my ex who is sixty seven now, still would pass for a woman of say late forties. Not even a crows foot in the corner of her eyes an she does not wear makeup.
Well from the sound of things, you knew of those channels I mentioned in my prior comments and so happy to hear that you do enjoy Karl and Brent, Dan to me is either soured on people or truely a hack... but join the club as I too consider myself one also. I may be old, and miserable for people to be around, but a contest of popularity is not high on my wish list. As for piecing this rig together, aside from it being a backyard college for guys like ourselves who going to school is as much fun as waking up from some bad alcohol trip to find a really fat and ugly woman much older than yourself.,.. please don't ask me how I know but ceasing from a beverage stronger than root beer was a high motivator. You find the easiest way to do this kind of work till eventually its all getting easier., just getting a place to start can give ya nightmares.
It's always those vampires! Thanks for the comment!!
@@madgingercustoms With all that, give your lovely girl a inappropriate hug from this dirty old man in alaska. :>)

Despite your inexperienced the rocker pannel looks great. You'll never gain experience sitting on the couch Trolling on CZcams.
Some people in the comments on my other videos love to troll. I think it's funny. Getting out there and just doing the work is the only way to learn for me.
any car can be fully restored but for most people with a budget minimizes what can be done i think spending 3k is way more than i would have spent - i have a neighbor upset i wont spend any money on fixing up my 87 ram 50. it runs it drives and no one wants to steal it what more can you ask for
Yeah, I think the car overall will be cool when it's "done"
Dereck from vice grip garage does use vice grips
Lol
Before you cut any more material out , you need to brace up the door frames , B pillars , etc . or you are going to catch hell !
Check out cold war motors Scott is an amazing body guy he took a 60 dodge 4 door and 2 60 furys built all the rear quarters and other rusted part and built one of the slickest 60 furys ever seen
I will!!
