Everyone knows being a front region for trade with China is highly profitable. Italy is historically serving that role with the East. But US is not happy and pulled the plug. There is nothing wrong with Meloni's thinking ... it is never her thinking, but Uncle Sam's. Now Italy has done its services for US, it can now slowly approach China again, under a different cooperation umbrella, to be a front region for trade with China. All politics. All is well.
