Blacksmithing - Making a pair of scissors

  • Today I show how I forge a pair of basic scissors from a piece of old coil spring. A quite rewarding project as the end product turns out to be a very useful tool!! Also included is a segment of me and my son finishing up a charging station for the household electronics...all designed by him and me as a helping hand :)

      Hannibal Lecter you can get a crappy version at Harbor Freight, and at some Asian grocery stores but nice Japanese shears can come at a premium

    My grandpa was a blacksmith and he died before I was born. Seeing a blacksmith create something is so incredibly fascinating; I can't help but wonder what my grandfather forged back then.

    People always say 'the art of Blacksmithing', I, and my family always refer to it as the 'Art and Science of Blacksmithing' - this would be an excellent example. Wonderful. Bravo! (PS I loved your son's project, need to inspire mine lot a little more I think :-) ).

    These will last several lifetimes... we need to do away with this idea of buying something cheap and throwing it away as buying another is cheaper... I know there are people out there who would pay for this kind of stuff and know that it would last or at least could be repaired / sharpened rather than thrown away into landfill. Great work :)

      Exactly right! I’ve started building furniture out of reclaimed wood for people. I don’t want to build a kitchen table for you.....I want to build it for you, your children, your grandchildren. That’s the level of craftsmanship you’re watching here.

    I can watch hundreds of blacksmithing videos for knives, swords, and other crazy weapons, and it's enjoyable and entertaining. But watching Torbjörn Åhman making a pair of scissors is satisfying on a different level.

    This is KEWL !!! And, you're right...it IS nerve wracking when you're putting the blade curve in for shear-action, because of the fact...the blade is SO HARD, its brittle and the least bit past the strength ledge, the blade will SNAP! I like the you LOVE the steel. Being gentle and taking your time to coax the metal into what's in your mind's eye! Beautiful! Thanks SO MUCH for sharing your tallent!

    I love your work....When I get in my forge of which is a shed with little venting..so my forage is outside of doorway...my problems is often bburning my project up and blisters from over heating....Also I don't have your skill with your hammer.
    At age 67 just started near first of last year....but I try to stay safe and loving the black smithing and so of the rewards....mostly building my folks garden tools.
    I have "invented" a weeding tool everyone who try it loves it.

    Watching this reveals truly how much of an art smithing is. You can go from using a power hammer slamming the billet, all the way to deliCTe dinks to make the curl. It’s truly beautiful

    This is a lost art!!! As a beginner blacksmith to see everything come together perfectly!! Everything meeting, matching and from the looks.... Damn sharp!! Beautiful work i will try to watch more video. As a 44 year old, single, disabled father of two ,5&9, year old young men these are the types of skills im passing on. Some of these videos folks just like to hear themselves talk?!?! Very informative video without the extra bs. From a beginner without allot of time for bs.... Thx!!

    I remember seeing a similar process for crafting scissors in India in the 1990s, the blades were made from old worn out hi carbon steel hand files with handles made from cast brass and riveted to the blades. I purchased about a dozen of various sizes and still have and use them. This is a fantastic video, keep up your good work Mr Torbjorn.

      For sure! I loved the intermission part, the phone/tablet charger stand. Very sweet and charming. Was going to say maybe you've adopted some of the Jimmy Deresta videography techniques? That's a GOOD thing, I love the non-narrated shop videos, it almost feels like I'm in my shop working with nobody to have to talk to.
