Preah Vihear - Temple in the Clouds

  • A magnificent, ancient, temple in the clouds that has been the centre of many years of conflict - That’s Preah Vihear! The subject of mystery, sadness, grandeur and timelessness. No wonder it’s inspired books and movies and been fought over for almost 100 years.
Situated on top of a 525m (1,722 ft) cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, Preah Vihear was built by Angkorian Kings Suryavarman I and Suryavarman II between 9th-12th centuries AD. The temple complex runs 800m (2,600 ft) along a north-south axis and is located on the Thai Cambodia border, 140 km from Angkor Wat.
In 1904 the border was agreed to largely follow the watershed line of the Dângrêk mountain range, which placed nearly all of Preah Vihear temple on Thailand's side. In 1907, after survey work, a map was drawn to show the border's location. The new topographic map, showed the line deviating slightly from the watershed without explanation in the Preah Vihear area, placing all of the temple on the Cambodian side. This was the map that would be used in the 1962 International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling.
Following the withdrawal of French troops from Cambodia in 1954, Thai forces occupied the temple to enforce their claim. Cambodia protested and in 1959 asked the ICJ to rule that the temple and the surrounding land lay in Cambodian territory. In 1962, following a lengthy, bitter dispute between Cambodia and Thailand over ownership, the International Court of Justice ruled that the temple is in Cambodia.
Even though the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh in April 1975, the Khmer National Armed Forces soldiers at Preah Vihear continued to hold out after the collapse of the Khmer Republic government. The Khmer Rouge captured Preah Vihear Temple in May 1975. It was said to be the last place in Cambodia to fall to the Khmer Rouge. Full-scale war began again in Cambodia in December 1978 when the Vietnamese army invaded to overthrow the Khmer Rouge. Khmer Rouge troops retreated to border areas. Guerrilla warfare continued through the 1980s and 90s, hampering access to Preah Vihear.
The temple opened briefly to the public in 1992, only to be re-occupied again by the Khmer Rouge. The temple opened again to visitors from the Thai side at the end of 1998 as there was no access from Cambodia. Cambodia completed the construction of a long-awaited access road up the cliff in 2003.
On July 7, 2008, Preah Vihear was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Between 2008 and 2013 further conflict was fought over the land to the east and west of the temple (south being previously agreed as Cambodian, north as Thai). This resulted in further damage being done to the temple by gunfire. The ICJ ruled on 11 November 2013 that the land adjacent to the temple on the east and west belonged to Cambodia and that any Thai security forces still in that area should leave.

Wonder why this temple is not talked about as Angkor Wat. The architecture and the view is just amazing. Its so underrated. The Cambodian government should do more to promote this temple.

This is an absolutely beautiful temple but it’s quite remote and, until recently (as in 2013) the ownership of Preah Vihear was still being contested and the area was dangerous due to the political instability… but, yes, it’s certainly worth going out of your way to visit ❤️ Thanks for your interest though - and sorry it’s taken so long to reply!! 🙏🏻

@@GregPetaSmith Ah that explains why. Its such a shame though that politics get into way with it living up to its potential.

This temple is like the Macchu Picchu of Asia. Not just politics and remoteness hinders its popularity but it's overshadowed by Angkor wat and the temples of Angkor. There is an ancient staircase that leads up this mountain temple on the other side most people never use. This ancient staircase is linked by a road system all the way to Angkor the capital.

Thanks for sharing. Beautiful but the view from the cliff looks so hazy. What time of the year did you go visit? Did the access from Thai side of the border still remain closed?

There is a other ancient staircase from the Cambodian side which ia much more adventurous. I rather use the one on the Khmer side. You get to appreciate the engineering marvel of the Khmers to built and carve the stairs on the side of the mountain
