  • Obviously, this video expresses my opinion about classes for players new to DDO based on my experience playing the game since Turbine's closed DDO beta 1 in 2005. Watch to the end to be surprised, the class I chose as best is not universally agreed upon!

One of the easiest first time character is paladin two level rogue. Paladin with evasion is really forgiving.

Agree mostly but I think barbarian and paladin are probably the best for new players whereas artificer has the same issue for a new player as something like a druid- it's so versatile that it's complex

yeah there are many ways to mess up a toon when on a jack of all trades per say. Sometimes you end up putting your eggs in to many baskets as a newb. I know i did!

I don't know why you are not looking at the Blightcaster druid as a S tier for a new player. Between the low cost of thorn spell-like abilities and death eater they become almost un-killable by level 7 or 8. They are not that complex to build or play. Blightcaster is far and away the most popular build in hardcore leagues because of their survivability. I think you missed on that one.

Yes, you're correct, blight druid is great, in the hands of a good experienced player it will dominate; I myself played it as my main for hardcore when it came out; This list, isn't for hardcore, its for brand new players to the game, beginners to ddo; the druid isn't s tier for because there's a lot of nuances that a brand-new player would miss. My opinion.

Hard to go wrong with Druid in the game right now... Lends itself to several excellent play styles, tanky-cc-dps/speedy-dps/best-caster-dps. Its not fool-proof but nothing is really.

I love Druid and only recently TR'd into a warlock; I've been a nuker ice druid for the past year.

Blood tribute is awesome; I kept it B tier due to the necessity to track your constitution rage/non-rage, etc for a brand new player. I really like warforged SWF barbarians, very fun.

I kind of disagree. For me its casters>melee> specialists>iconics (skip too much of the early game).
Some casters can be harder to play since they die easier (wiz, sorc). But classes like cleric and druid can take quite a punch while dishing out damage and healing (I'd also count palemaster here).
Melee tends to be much more gear dependent than non-DC based casters. The same can be applied to ranged builds as well. My friend is running a ranged character and despite running with a RL set is doing half the damage that I'm doing as a cleric with random lvl 7-12 gear (both of us are lvl 13).
I think the S tier for a new player would be a palemaster build. 2 Rogue 18 Wizard (palemaster, with some EK). It lets you learn where traps are, deal really good damage, self heal, get a pet, and lets you TR with a wizard PL that will be very helpful for any caster going forward. The feats are really easy too: Just take meta magics and spell school specialization

I do really like pale master, i avoided wizard for new bc of the economic requirements to scribe spells, the small spell point pool, and overall low hit point squishiness; I put clerics as my top A tier with artificer only beating them very slightly for S tier due to rune arms, a pet, trapping, and the built in heals. I do understand the argument to put druid in A or S tier; I mained Mary as a nuker druid for years up until very recently and it's still one of my favorites in ddo, but put them c tier for a brand-new player due to the druidic oath and the class trees that can be confusing to someone not used to ddo.

Artificer is worst class in the game, dps is bad, trapping with no evasion is bad not as good as a Rogue, cant tank as good as a tank, cant range as good as a ranger, cant cast as good as a sorc or alcy or druid, Don't know why its so popular in hc, I always see them dying in traps with no evasion. LOL. It does multiple things but not as good as the dedicated class for it. For Beginners, Cleric is the best caster, Paladin the best Melee, dont bother with trappers Id say if you are beginner. Will be interesting thing to see what they do when their bolts run out as a new player with they don't return and they sit there with their thumb up their butt not knowing why it doesn't fire. Artificer...For when you want to be able to do a little of everything, poorly.

I love cleric and paladin- its true no evasion but you can beef them up with lots of prr and if you're a robot get self-heals; Traps are usually a top killer - I have seen new players do pretty well on arti and having the pet dog just makes it even better which is why it is my top recommend. It's not for me, I'm not a player of arti, but I feel its Swiss army knife style helps get Wins, whether doing melee arti, ranged arti, or caster arti.

I disagree with your assessment of Artificer. They do everything, well, not the best because then people would cry that they are broken op, so they do a good job balancing them.
They can pump up damage, either throw Crossbows, Melee or Casting. They can tank pretty well, so they are versatile and that is their strength.
They are definitely a nice group class that can also solo. Not many classes can do both on the same build. If you build for group, you most likely can't solo well/fast and survive or vice versa. A lot of people see this game as "It's only min/max and R10 Epic Legendary Raid level builds or it's nothing and no point of you playing" that mentality is what keeps new players from playing.
There are best classes for each role obviously, but saying one class is bad or plays poorly because they aren't the best at something is being short sighted imo.

I agree but here is how I would rank them (Beginner):
    S - Barbarian, Artificer, Warlock
    A - Paladin, Cleric
    B - Fighter, Ranger, Bard
C - Druid, Wizard, Sorceror, Rogue
D - Favored Soul, Alchemist, Monk
I agree the Artificer is probably the best class in the game for a new player. They can handle everything the game throws at you, making it great for someone learning the ropes or just wants to experience the most out of the game's mechanics. Additionally, they don't require a ton of gear. The only downside is that the class has a decent sized jump in complexity if you are not a Warforged, which new players dont start off with unless they purchase the race beforehand.
Similarly, Barbarians are the best melee class for beginners in my opinion, especially as a Warforged but a Dwarf is a good choice since new players won't have unlocked Warforge yet. The playstyle is the simplest of any of the classes: just equip the best two handed weapon you have, hold down the mouse button, keep Rage and Blood Tribute active while you kill the bad guys. The only downside is its so simple it can become somewhat boring. They also don't require as much gear, unlike a Paladin, which, with a full set of good gear, I agree is better than the Barbarian in the long run.
The Warlock is by far the easiest and most beginner-friendly spellcaster. Once you reach level 12 as an Enlightened Spirit, the skill level for the playstyle is very similar to that of a Barbarian except you are using spells to kill things. The only downside is the DPS as you stated, so if a new player wants to be able to just blow up everything with one or two spells and move on: I would suggest Sorceror but I would also stress the importance to following a Build made by a more experienced player.
I agree that both Paladin and Cleric belong in the A Tier.
Regarding the B Tier, as mentioned earlier, I would have placed both Barbarian and Warlock at the top. Additionally, I would move Bard up to B Tier instead of C Tier. The reason for this is that being a Bard doesn't take much; you can self-heal, self-buff, and you're always a welcome addition to any group you want to join.
As for the C Tier, I agree but would like to make a few notes. For Druid, if you go Blightcaster, you probably move up to High A Tier or S Tier. Blightcaster, at the time of writing this, is overpowered for new players starting with nothing.
Regarding Wizard and Sorcerer, if you go Eldritch Knight (Melee) and have unlocked Warforged, going in that direction would boost both to A Tier.
Finally, for the D Tier, Alchemist and Monk would also be my least recommended choices for a new player. Both of these classes put the "Advanced" in Dungeons and Dragons. Favored Soul isn't too complex, but they are quite underpowered compared to the Cleric when it comes to the same playstyle.

I have been playing for a long time and seen many new players come and go, so much of my list is based on experience I've had with players. Warlock ive seen baffle new players - it may not seem possible, but the choice of which pact, dragging and turning on the pact, one of my buddies played a warlock never new he had to drag anything turn it on so had no pact, no auras, nothing. Barbarian you mention blood tribute - that's up a certain tree not native to barbarian - ive seen new players not even know they had to make selections in the trees and just run around - also with blood tribute specifically, it requires monitoring of con which many new players dont do - i usually recommend occult slayer for new players doing barb, but as you see i recommend other things before that. Overall i think its subjective and everyone has opinons, yours are solid and great and i understand as someone who's played why you recommend and list them as you have. For me, having worked with ultra new non-d&d players, and see them completely baffled by things like mana and spending class points, I tried to make my list as easy as possible - i believe arti out of the box is great even on a non WF (WF is best) and pally/cleric are very good bc of the native heals even if the player forgets to spec or put on gear or equip a weapon (Ive seen that too)

@@MaryXTV It's funny that you mentioned forgetting to activate your Warlock pact. I've been there before, and I wasn't new to Warlock. I went through the entire harbor without activating it wondering why my damage was garbo, so you're absolutely right about it not being intuitive. Also a few of the Enlightened Spirit buffs turn off when you log off so you have a good point there.
I understand your perspective and why you chose the order that you did, even better after you explained your logic even further to me. I approached it with similar criteria, and, with the exception of three classes, our lists are essentially the same. My intention wasn't to correct or claim that my list is a "better list" or "the one true list to rule them all". I was truly inspired by your video and wanted to share my own list if I were to put one together. My approach was to consider the classes with the easiest playstyle, assuming the player already knew the most basic fundamentals like to equip a weapon when playing melee, spending points in the enhancement trees, etc. So if a player didn't know to do these things, yeah I agree Warlock and Barbarian would fall a tier or 2 for me as well.
However if we consider a scenario where the new player has absolutely no knowledge of skill trees and that they need to equip a weapon, what are your thoughts on placing Bard in the S tier? I mean, all you need to do is join a group, play your songs at the start of the quest, and for the remainder of the dungeon, you can literally spend the entire rest of the time running into walls without anyone noticing much. Even if you are not aware of how to play the songs, someone in the group even out of frustration is likely to inform you on this skill at some point: so free DDO lesson comes built in with the class. Even when playing solo, your songs provide you with some good buffs and you have self-healing so you dont even need to know about the Enhancement trees. Grab a Hireling and with your buffs, they will do everything for you. Bard is basically Game-Genie cheat level for a complete newbie to complete DDO.
