The blast engineer for hole in the rock was my great great grandfather Benjamin Perkins.
Ben was a born in the UK doing mining jobs starting at the age of 8. He started working with dynamite not long after.
In the UK he joined the LDS church and took a train to Salt Lake. He was called by church leaders to help colonize southern Utah. He took his wife and went with the wagon party down to the area where they’d create hole in the rock.
There’s not a whole lot of information on how he created the hole in the rock in terms of engineering and design. Ben didn’t have an education since he was working in mines his whole life, but he designed the suspended tracks and perfectly measured the blast holes to allow the tracks that’d allow the wagons to go down the cliffs and gullies. They used ropes and pulleys to bring the carts down safely.
I guess you could say I’m proud. Haha!

Rudy you have made me jealous! That looks like an amazing trip..we love going off road in Moab, we have driven part of that route through Kanab on the highway. We have visited St. George and Hurricane but we are all the way in South Carolina. 😪 Makes visits rare...wish we could figure out a way to move closer to your area and enjoy trips like yours more often!😢 Thanks for taking us along 😬

Rudy, janelle, watching this and your obvious need for a slower pace, I could imagine, you visiting cerro Gordon ghost town living. Your energys would match so well!
I'm really enjoying the slowed down pace of your videos now, film enough to be able to have time for yourselves and congratulations on the channel and the success that is coming your way.

Amazing what our heritage had to go through to get to where they wanted to be. But all they had was time. Ruddy keep it up. Show us more kk

One of my favorite trails. This was my experience in a SXS and prompted us to buy our own. Can't wait to go back and do it again.
