2016 Bentley Flying Spur UNBOXING Review - When The BMW 7 Series Is No Longer Expensive Enough

  • Today's unboxing review is for a sedan that has a total of 616 hp. Do you need 616 ponies? No, but that's not the point. Welcome to Bentley ownership, and the 2016 Flying Spur is the perfect example of performance and luxury all packed into one. Would you expect anything less from a Bentley? Of course not. The Flying Spur was first launched back in 2005 and a recent refresh has helped to make it even more competitive in this uber luxury segment. What's interesting is that the Flying Spur, essentially a sedan version of Continental GT coupe and cabrio, is based on the same platform that underpinned the previous generation Audi A8, and yet it's still considered one of the best big luxury sedans on the market.
Our tester was equipped with a lot of extras such as $12,775 polished wheels, $2,080 veneered picnic tables, and a $1,245 wood and hide 3-spoke steering wheel. Oh, and one more thing: the exterior paint alone is a $5,715 option. Performance? Try 0-60 mph in only 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph. Power is sent to all four wheels (40:60 front/rear split) via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Perhaps it's best to think of the Flying Spur as a limo with attitude; you want to be behind the wheel but the passenger accommodations are also exuberant. So, is there anything not to like about this W12-powered luxury beast? Check out the review and find out. Enjoy!

    Two things:
    1. This is the second generation Flying Spur. The first generation did date back to 2005 and was called the Continental Flying Spur. The second generation launched in 2013 is all new. It is therefore incorrect to say that the design dates back a decade; it does not.
    2. Stop calling it a German car. Just because the company is owned by VW doesn't make it a German car. Jaguar is owned by Tata, does that make it Indian? Volvo is owned by Geely, does that make it Chinese?

Two answers: 1) It was not all new in 2013. The platform was the same, despite dropping the Continental name. 2) It's German engineering, period. Yes, it's made in the UK but the engine, transmission, platform, etc. all German.

I owned a 2012 Bentley GTC Mulliner with the NAIM Audio option. The SatNav is absurdly stupid. Every commend requires an additional 1-2 seconds of lag per click. I can type a 10 digit phone number into my BMW X5M and hit CALL in under 3 seconds. In the GTC it takes loner than 10 seconds. Insane.

All the people in my rich area drive S Class and 7 series. Ironically the Rolls and Bentley are RENTED by middle class people for the weekend to look rich.

Seanthecomputertech The Flying Spur? As a pilot I’ve flown all models of Bentleys and Rollers on many occasions. Mirroring your comment, I find the Mulsanne’s seats to be the absolute best automotive seat in history. They’re absolute ergonomic perfection!

I can understand why the American guy takes the lead with the US cars, but it would be cool if the British guy takes the lead with the U.K./euro cars.

Kaisuke971 I own a Flying Spur. The Bentley has an exceptional fit and finish, and certainly isn’t plastic. You're simply mistaken.
