  • Second attempt unweighted Damsel. This will be its first time ever on the water. It will have a challenge as the conditions are flat calm and fishing over the past few weeks has been slow. The video as always will have many tutorial tips. Helping you understand and improve. If you enjoy the video please consider subscribing or giving us a thumbs up. Many thanks. Shaun.

Small, unweighted and sparse. I will sort another tying video soon. Mind we have only another three to do. Thanks for the support. Take care. Shaun.

    Great video once again Shaun! I only started fly fishing couple years ago and tying since December. I tried this pattern and boom 2nd cast a braw 4lb rainbow! Ended with 5 on the damsel. Tried it at another fishery couple days later got my best catch yet at that place, 6 fell to the damsel. What a pattern it'll be in my box for good. I've just tied them in white and black also yet to try them!!

      Well done you. You have done really well there. I had a picture and a brief description of the pattern. You are a bit like the boys and myself, we don't need much detail to sort a fly. To be honest once shown how to put thread on the hook, who needs to be shown this every time. The good thing hear is the pattern being high in the water. this means all the fish can see it. Less material in the tail means it works better, and certainly when fished slow. Too much restricts movement. So happy to hear of your success. Not sure if you have checked out the black lure. Hays Black and Blue. Now that is clever. Its how the lead is used. This pattern has caught me hundreds. Mind fished it two weeks ago for 20min and it had its first fail. Great to hear from you. Take care mate. Shaun.

      Oh no, is this a hormonal thing. Justin suffers with this. Honestly Darryl this is a great confidence boost for me. I spend hours, actually a week and some times more putting this stuff together. Wondering if I am putting this across correctly. Is it enough, is it to much, will they understand. I face the same problems every video. Honestly Darryl I would not do this by choice. Not sure if you are aware, but this whole CZcams thing for me was accidental. But its people like your self that keep me going. Thanks so much mate. Take care. Shaun.

      Thanks John. Actually it's the fish that is driving us to go smaller. The resident fish is getting harder to catch. For most of the best fish in our lake have been feeding on really small stuff all summer. For the last three years we have noticed less hatches. But it has been said that this year was better than the last two. But this is nothing to what it used to be. The small stuff seem to be less effected. And fish often switch onto the most abundant. Thanks again John. Take care mate. Shaun.

    Rather than always fishing the same wee fishery go to some bigger waters to test the flies out properly .

      We actually do send the patterns to a few people who try them out for us. This is north and south of the country. And Hayscastle is a great water for learning about new patterns. This is more down to its catchment being so small. This in turn means we stock it a lot less than the average water. We could fish a hand full of waters around here, but they are full of stock fish. And a lot of the good waters are either shut or still struggling. We are looking at doing more waters soon as they start to reopen. But these waters on average are a good 3 to 4 hours drive. Oh and these patterns do get onto a lot of waters. Canada and America or doing quite well with them. You are lucky up north. You have some great waters, and some of the best wild waters. I follow a lot of channels from up north, mainly on the wild waters. I would love to fish up there. But my budget is nothing that good, and every penny is accounted for. So I am great full for these You Tube channels. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.

      One line came up a few times, and its the Barrio. If your rod has a faster action, this could work quite well. The line has a bit of stretch which can help reduce snap off. It ticks a lot of boxes. It loads a rod very quickly. Has a tapered running line. Which means you can back cast as much as you like. Check out some of the reviews on this line. Worth a look for a mid range price.

    Fantastic video and in depth aswell, can I ask something as I am fairly new to it, I get the fishes window when it's high in the water compared to low in the water, but what difference does the leader length make in relation to this? Is it compared to the far bank and the bank that is nearest? Thanks in advance and sorry if the answer seems blatantly obvious. Tight lines.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 10 měsíci

      No problem Brian, I think. OK lets say you are on the bank, and out in front of you is a fish, say 30' out and say 6' deep. If you made a cast with a 10' tippet Your fly line will be seen by the fish. Which could reduce the chance of that fish taking. The longer tippet could improve your chances, as the fly line will be out side the window. We will fish shorter tippet with the floating line. This is mainly when fishing slower or even static. When we fish these methods we are not targeting a fish. We will leave the line out there and wait for a fish to come by our fly. Bit like fishing the bung. But like I have demonstrated in the video, you will still catch fish on the shorter tippet. But your chances are higher with longer. A lot of people don't consider tippet length. But there are going to times when it is very important. Most of all when fishing a sink line. I will get to cover these things some time. So keep an eye out. Hope this helps. If not don't worry to much as it may be some time before you build to a 20' or even 15' tippet. Just enjoy your fishing and the rest will come with time. Take care mate. Shaun.

      @@sammellor605 OK, well the first thing if you use a 4lb tippet I hope you are on a medium to slow rod action. Fast tip you will get snapped. During this summer I have not gone below 6lb even on the dries. Plus this water does have some big fish. Without doubt the best practice on any water is to fish light. Meaning, be mobile. Net on back. Cover as much water as you can. Chances are that these fish have seen a lot of the bigger patterns and fished at the normal strip retrieve. Offer them something different. Check water clarity. If good a small size 14 or smaller nymph or diawel or something along these lines. Try high and fast. This will enable you to cover water with a bit of pace. If you feel you need to slow things down. Let the fly or flies drop. Slowly draw them up. Remember this time of year fish often have an eye on the surface. So always better above than below. I have been getting a good response lately with a small 16 few turns of dubbing and cdc tied in half way on the shank. Actually had four fish on this today. 7 on a black diawel which has a bit of glitz. and one on the lure. I fished the diawel high and fast early morning. fish went down or slowed, so I slowed. Dry fly. Cast in leave for about 10 sec, move it a bit, nothing interested. Cast again, but cover new water. Could go on for ever. I hope you can get something from this.
