Don't know what your chances of getting onto the water early Adrian. But for the past few weeks I have found good fishing just after first light and up to about 11 o'clock. These hot days are driving the fish down. But it seems like they are slowing there metabolism down. Now every body is experiencing a slow down in insect life. This being so, then I would say aquatic life is surly doing the same. Then I would understand fish responding to this. Clear sky during late afternoon / evening is not good for a great hatch as temperatures plummet. But only one good thing that comes from this. And that is the evening and night cooling, bringing a few fish towards the surface. We have had a hand full of fish coming up for an evening rise. But sadly the days of yesterday I think have gone. Stock fish are behaving oddly also. 3 weeks ago we put 80 fish in. 2 days later you would have never known. Last week we put another 100 in. 3 day later same thing. But talking with the fisheries, they say this is happening all over the country. And this is exmoor. They deliver to most waters now. But to be honest with you, this will not effect me as much as I can enjoy my fishing with just the odd fish. For those who fish for numbers, it will be a struggle. In turn the fisheries manager will struggle, as these same people decide its not worth it. But as I say target the mornings, and don't ignore the margins. Great to hear from you Adrian. Thanks Stevie, I have been doing a bit of fishing, but not as much as I would like. I have been renovating my Daughters house. And during this time they have been living with my wife and me. Its doing my head in. I have been working all hours. But the worst thing is, my Gran daughter is sleeping in my computer room. So I get very little chance to get on it. I have a small lap top. But it can't cope with the videos I do. It will only do the simple stuff. I have a cracker on the way. We fished Tiefi Pools a few weeks back, so you could be watching that in a weeks time, as I have been working on it for the last two and a bit weeks. Take care Stevie. Shaun.
You are not alone on this one Mark. A lot of people struggle this time of year. I have never fished the intermediate so much before in the summer. But if on the floater, I would put my intermediate braid on. 10' plus of tippet and something like a diawel. I would be looking to cover as much water as I could. Cast out let it drop a bit, say 10 sec. Then fast figure of eight in. If the water quality is decent, the fish lower down, which is the fish we won't. Will see the fly and will come from depth for it. These fish are far and few between, and this is why we need to cover the water. At the moment I have been picking good fish with the intermediate and the latest lure. The Hays Black and Blue. Again fished fast when fish are a bit higher. Which is morning and evening. I will have to sort a video covering the evening. Keep trying different methods. But remember every day is going to be different. And every water different. I wish you all the best. And yet I was getting fish, Not many. And as I said in the video, so many was fishing too fast. Yes that can work at times. But most of the fish were down and slow. So I had to do this video. I hope it works, as it does for me. Mind There was that moment when the fish did come up. Every day is going to be different, and you got to be prepared to change things. I actually thrive on these difficult times. This is when I learn most. As I said in the video stocking for most waters will be either stopped or reduced. Thing is transporting fish and stocking in these conditions is criminal. So we are left with fish that are more resident and have switched over to natural foods. More challenging if you like. I think the true nature of fishing is becoming a bit lost with all the stocking. I don't disagree with stock fish, as there are a lot of people who are getting into fishing. And its great to get started on these waters. But for me its more about the challenge. Oh next video might be a bit sooner than norm. Mind been working on it for the last week or so. @@moody2840 Mark have you been on the Wooleston water much lately. Not sure if you know but Justin and myself was there a few weeks back. I got to say mate, we think they are making a big mistake for the long term of the water. Duane had a very good system there. And we feel they are messing this up. We did advise them, or the under study bloke as main man was in Iceland. But he was determined to continue with there ways. We have found out the hard way on our water. Both days I arrived early and left late so disappointed to blank although still enjoyed the day. I miss Duane. Shaun: Another fine video. I am impressed with the way you weave so many tips and so much detailed instruction into the body of your productions. I have a question though: As the day went on, I understood that you were not finding many active fish near the surface or in mid-water and that you felt you should go deeper and try that for a while. I thought you might switch your intermediate braid for one that sank faster, but you stayed with the I braid. I wonder why you chose that course. Would the slow sink braid not have worked for you? I am trying to understand when other such sink rates prove useful. Thanks, as always, for the good instruction.
Ok first of all I know you watched the video with the floating and sink line. I did make a critical point in there. Think of the speed you want to fish your flies and then the depth. So at this time of year in the UK the fish are, for the most lethargic and slow. There are some good fish moving around at mid water. But they are spaced out, but still moving slow. So to better my chances, I want to have smaller flies on, and something that drops through the column's slowly. This gives me more chance of being picked up by fish mid water as well as lower. If I retrieve slowly I can maintain a certain depth. Now if I fish a faster sink rate line or leader. This would lessen my chances for fish higher up. And once I reach a level where fish might be. I have to retrieve faster to maintain that level. Now this is fine if the fish want it faster. But over the last 4 or 5 weeks on this water, the lure boys as I call them. Fish there sinking lines and move faster. They do not connect with as many fish. They pick one or two off now and then. I will be back on the sink lines soon, as the fish move higher in the water, or they start moving faster deeper. So to round it off. If the fish are moving mid water faster. A sink line. this means I can maintain a depth at a certain speed. If they are moving fast on top. And I mean in the top 4 or so foot. Float line. So its all about the speed I want to retrieve. The faster the retrieve the faster the sink line. Sink line for me has nothing to do with depth. Well it has, but has not. If you know what I mean. You have said before that your mates would not consider a float line for a lot of things. But if you are on a fast flowing river, the float line would be second choice. And this is because of the water speed. Which simulates a fast retrieve. I hope some of this makes sense to you. If not we can try another angle. Take care and thanks for a great comment. Shaun.

i blanked at the fishery i belong to!water is 25 C the weed is out of contol so theres only a few places you can fish now.i looked at the record book there had been 25 people who had fished there since i had last been and they all blanked.i did manage to catch 50 rudd on 2 visits no trout though.ive been to another fishery with airators and alot less weed to get my fix,ut its harder work in this weather.going to try again tomorrow with a few tosh special flies!if they work then i know im onto something
We are lucky as our water does warm up, but not to those temps. Weed is a bit of a problem at the moment. we have got a lot of water to fish, but the weed has taken over 30% . I do all the weeding on this water. But due to the work contracts I am stuck with at the moment, does mean weeding has been reduced. I will be back on it soon. And already looking forward to next year. As I plan to get this water top notch. Mind I did say that this time last year. But I did not account on this bloody contract. A lot of waters are finding it difficult. I tend to target the evenings more, but you can't count on that any longer. The hatches are down, much like last summer. Was on the water myself this evening. Young Arran had four, all on different methods. I had one brown on the red buzzer and two knocks on my muskin v. Good luck with your special's, I hope they do something. But you are sounding confident, so you are half way there mate. Oh if it helps, Arran had his fish on. Floating line. Tungsten bead apps. This is quite funny actually. About 2 months ago the boys and myself did order tippet rings. We was on the water at hays reading the instructions, then attempt to put them on. Cut it short we had a great laugh and lost most of them. None of us have even gone there again. And to be honest we have no problem with a knot. Thanks for the comment Derick. Shaun.
Hi Shaun, good to see you back on the water. About mending the line...my experience from coarse fishing days is that allowing the wind to pull the line round in an arc = no bites, because the bait is moving faster than would be natural. I know there can be undercurrents on a windy day that might help a trout explain the fast moving fly but my gut tells me that not mending the line will reduce takes a lot, even with trout, and that a different method to get the fly down would work better. I have learnt so much on presentation from some of the top course anglers, not that I have met them, its what they have written. I have learnt a lot about undertow from the same people. I think the first thing to consider is the fishes behaviour. Trout will often respond to faster moving items. So its always worth even when you know it should be fished slow, but nothing is happening. Try a few fast retrieves. But you are correct, that in course fishing the fish will ignore faster moving items. Or for most. But when we think of what they naturally feed on, could be why. Trout will eat almost anything. A few months back My self and two of the boys witnessed a trout coming up and engulfing a frog as it swam in the margins. And it was not a small frog. And of course they eat other fish. But when we are presenting very small natural patterns and trying to present them almost static, and I say almost static, because that is as good as it gets. There is no such thing as static, even in flat calm. And when the wind picks up that's another issue. But I can't think of a better way to present a natural than the floating line, and mending if need be. This is a great comment Michael, got me thinking. But think about this one then. If some how there was a way to present a perfect representation. Would we even know the fish was on. Thanks for the comment Michael. Take care. Shaun.

Shaun Where can I find your various cling film patterns? I have had success with the one you showed how to tie but I am keen to test others. My local Stillwater Craigmore in Randalstown NI is all about small patterns and fine tippet.

Had to go over my mates house tonight just so he could take a picture of a fly. Mine was shit. But another one I use it for at times, is the cheeks on the buzzer. Paul I am so sorry that I missed this. I have two GoPros 7 and 9. I do have problems with them. I do not understand why they keep bringing them out and as far as I know they all have some sort of problem. I also have a sony zv 1. The sony is good my mate tells me. to be honest I am crap with cameras. My mate has to keep resetting it for me. This is because I am all fingers and thumbs. I do have a good few other cameras. But the ones mentioned I use most.

Hi Stephen, I have no preference. I start with about 6/8". But on those days when its difficult and I end up changes flies often. I find myself tying a fly onto a 2" dropper. There are a lot of people out there who will be very precise with things like droppers. But the reality is we can never present as we want. The biggest question asked is how to stop a dropper going around the main line. For most of the time we have no idea as to what is really going on under the water. And a lot of the time it depends on what pattern you have on. Most will say use a heavier dropper than the main line. I am sure this could help. But not proven. I know you did not ask about this. Shaun: Another fine video. I am impressed with the way you weave so many tips and so much detailed instruction into the body of your productions.
I have a question though: As the day went on, I understood that you were not finding many active fish near the surface or in mid-water and that you felt you should go deeper and try that for a while. I thought you might switch your intermediate braid for one that sank faster, but you stayed with the I braid. I wonder why you chose that course. Would the slow sink braid not have worked for you? I am trying to understand when other such sink rates prove useful.

Ok first of all I know you watched the video with the floating and sink line. I did make a critical point in there. Think of the speed you want to fish your flies and then the depth. So at this time of year in the UK the fish are, for the most lethargic and slow. There are some good fish moving around at mid water. But they are spaced out, but still moving slow. So to better my chances, I want to have smaller flies on, and something that drops through the column's slowly. This gives me more chance of being picked up by fish mid water as well as lower. If I retrieve slowly I can maintain a certain depth. Now if I fish a faster sink rate line or leader. This would lessen my chances for fish higher up. And once I reach a level where fish might be. I have to retrieve faster to maintain that level. Now this is fine if the fish want it faster. But over the last 4 or 5 weeks on this water, the lure boys as I call them. Fish there sinking lines and move faster. They do not connect with as many fish. They pick one or two off now and then. I will be back on the sink lines soon, as the fish move higher in the water, or they start moving faster deeper. So to round it off. If the fish are moving mid water faster. A sink line. this means I can maintain a depth at a certain speed. If they are moving fast on top. And I mean in the top 4 or so foot. Float line. So its all about the speed I want to retrieve. The faster the retrieve the faster the sink line. Sink line for me has nothing to do with depth. Well it has, but has not. If you know what I mean. You have said before that your mates would not consider a float line for a lot of things. But if you are on a fast flowing river, the float line would be second choice. And this is because of the water speed. Which simulates a fast retrieve. I hope some of this makes sense to you. If not we can try another angle. Take care and thanks for a great comment. Shaun.

Hi James, I got a feeling I missed some of your comments. I am playing catch up at the moment mate. Strike Indicator, is that like a bright ball you can hook a boat onto. Really mate they have there uses. But not for this. Did fish this thing once for about half an hour. I got bored.
i blanked at the fishery i belong to!water is 25 C the weed is out of contol so theres only a few places you can fish now.i looked at the record book there had been 25 people who had fished there since i had last been and they all blanked.i did manage to catch 50 rudd on 2 visits no trout though.ive been to another fishery with airators and alot less weed to get my fix,ut its harder work in this weather.going to try again tomorrow with a few tosh special flies!if they work then i know im onto something
We are lucky as our water does warm up, but not to those temps. Weed is a bit of a problem at the moment. we have got a lot of water to fish, but the weed has taken over 30% . I do all the weeding on this water. But due to the work contracts I am stuck with at the moment, does mean weeding has been reduced. I will be back on it soon. And already looking forward to next year. As I plan to get this water top notch. Mind I did say that this time last year. But I did not account on this bloody contract. A lot of waters are finding it difficult. I tend to target the evenings more, but you can't count on that any longer. The hatches are down, much like last summer. Was on the water myself this evening. Young Arran had four, all on different methods. I had one brown on the red buzzer and two knocks on my muskin v. Good luck with your special's, I hope they do something. But you are sounding confident, so you are half way there mate. Oh if it helps, Arran had his fish on. Floating line. Tungsten bead apps. This is quite funny actually. About 2 months ago the boys and myself did order tippet rings. We was on the water at hays reading the instructions, then attempt to put them on. Cut it short we had a great laugh and lost most of them. None of us have even gone there again. And to be honest we have no problem with a knot. Thanks for the comment Derick. Shaun.
Hi Shaun, good to see you back on the water. About mending the line...my experience from coarse fishing days is that allowing the wind to pull the line round in an arc = no bites, because the bait is moving faster than would be natural. I know there can be undercurrents on a windy day that might help a trout explain the fast moving fly but my gut tells me that not mending the line will reduce takes a lot, even with trout, and that a different method to get the fly down would work better. I have learnt so much on presentation from some of the top course anglers, not that I have met them, its what they have written. I have learnt a lot about undertow from the same people. I think the first thing to consider is the fishes behaviour. Trout will often respond to faster moving items. So its always worth even when you know it should be fished slow, but nothing is happening. Try a few fast retrieves. But you are correct, that in course fishing the fish will ignore faster moving items. Or for most. But when we think of what they naturally feed on, could be why. Trout will eat almost anything. A few months back My self and two of the boys witnessed a trout coming up and engulfing a frog as it swam in the margins. And it was not a small frog. And of course they eat other fish. But when we are presenting very small natural patterns and trying to present them almost static, and I say almost static, because that is as good as it gets. There is no such thing as static, even in flat calm. And when the wind picks up that's another issue. But I can't think of a better way to present a natural than the floating line, and mending if need be. This is a great comment Michael, got me thinking. But think about this one then. If some how there was a way to present a perfect representation. Would we even know the fish was on. Thanks for the comment Michael. Take care. Shaun.

Where can I find your various cling film patterns? I have had success with the one you showed how to tie but I am keen to test others. My local Stillwater Craigmore in Randalstown NI is all about small patterns and fine tippet.
I love the sound of your water. May be one day. I really am trying to sort a camera out for fly tying. I am crap with camera's. Had to go over my mates house tonight just so he could take a picture of a fly. Mine was shit. But another one I use it for at times, is the cheeks on the buzzer. Paul I am so sorry that I missed this. I have two GoPros 7 and 9. I do have problems with them. I do not understand why they keep bringing them out and as far as I know they all have some sort of problem. I also have a sony zv 1. The sony is good my mate tells me. to be honest I am crap with cameras. My mate has to keep resetting it for me. This is because I am all fingers and thumbs. I do have a good few other cameras. But the ones mentioned I use most.

How long are your dropper’s
Hi Stephen, I have no preference. I start with about 6/8". But on those days when its difficult and I end up changes flies often. I find myself tying a fly onto a 2" dropper. There are a lot of people out there who will be very precise with things like droppers. But the reality is we can never present as we want. The biggest question asked is how to stop a dropper going around the main line. For most of the time we have no idea as to what is really going on under the water. And a lot of the time it depends on what pattern you have on. Most will say use a heavier dropper than the main line. I am sure this could help. But not proven. I know you did not ask about this. But I thought I would put my thoughts down just in case. Take care Stephen. Shaun.
