Hi Shaun Again excellent advice especially on furled leaders. I use one myself & have done for years with an added Roman Moser micro-loop which I’ve found gives me an added advantage especially in facing into a wind. Tight lines. Derick.

As you now know it was on the river where all of this started. Mind presenting to the Sea Trout and Salmon on the river was mainly more down stream. This on the smaller rivers where there was not great depth but good flow. Hope this works out for you. But it will certainly get that tippet where it needs to be. Shaun.

Another great informative video Shaun ! I've not used braided leaders for Stillwaters, only really used them for Sea Trout Fishing on the rivers. Hi Shaun, great explanation as always. Thanks for sharing. Been using the Snowbee Intermediate braided leader for a few months now after seeing you use them in previous videos and it’s made such a difference. I leave it on my flyiline pretty much permanently now. So much better.

Good explanation Shaun. As someone over in the States trying to improve his stillwater game, I watch a number of you guys in the UK and always questioned just going straight small diameter stuff straight to a fly line. As you said, turnover as well as damage to the line itself. I stopped using tapered mono leaders a long time ago since they are really for turning over dry flies. I make my own tapered leaders in a sense going from 25 lb material to 20 lb to 15 lb then a tippet ring. Length varies with the type of line as well what I’m fish. Works for me and protects the loops that I still have on my lines pretty well
Spot on mate. This is how I was setting up my leader and tippet for the last three months or more. So many people are using low diameter line straight onto the loop of fly line. Then you hear them complain the line is faulty. The leader for me is more about getting those flies through the flat surface as quick as poss, and maintaining a certain depth at a certain speed. As I have said in the video Gary, I have fished without it for the last three plus months. This so that I could get a better opinion. I could fish without it. But it is better with. Its small detail. But its sometimes small detail that can make the difference. Not every one will find the benefits. But if people are aware of it they can make up there own minds. Thanks for the comment Gary. Thanks Mike. The fishing at hays has been more than difficult over the last week. I have had my chances, but missed. The result being two blanks. Roz was on about stocking next week. I have told her to hold off for a while. The stock we have been getting is not as good as the stock we used to get. There for the fish take longer to recover. So fingers crossed for better conditions over the next few weeks. And hopefully Exmoor will deliver better stock. But we are hopeful for a great October/November. Catch up soon mate. Shaun.

When you talk about the line types... when I was really skint a friend gave me a new floating line. So with the old, I cut into the shieth every 2 feet for 12 or so feet so that it DID soak up water and made my own intermediate sinktip line. Worked really well and didn't overload the rod either. Quick tip if your brasic, tight or don't know if a 'real' inter line is worth the investment!
@@simongumn3154 This has been a very difficult summer for a lot of still waters and on the lakes for wild browns. Justin puts a lot of time on the wild lakes, and he has mentioned this year has been difficult. And this has been the main reason why we have not covered so many waters over this period. There is a lack of hatches compared to several years back. Much the same as you with your line, Justin damaged the end of his floater. After a few trips the line started to sink at the tip. He moaned about it. I told him that it looked like a good sink tip. This is great for a time. But I have been told that eventually the inner core will become weak, and it will break. How long this takes I have no idea. Nos da Simon.
Ah I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling this summer and agree the various hatches haven't had the volume of recent years. Think it's down to not having any super warm days myself. Take care. S

Thanks for this Kim. I have tried the small stuff, but hook rate was slow. But what we have noticed is that some of the best fish are on this for most of the time. Not sure how you fish this pattern. In a caneis hatch they are fixed on too them !! The way around this that's worked well for me is pull a muddler or a light wooly bugger just under the surface on a floater , remember they are always looking up and something whipped past there noses always attracts interest even on the hardest of occasions like that ..🎣👍
I will be trying this 2 mos Billy. All the big fish are on the stuff. Been trying all sorts. There was a video I watched about a year ago, actually I think lots of people seen it as it had a great response. Sipping trout. Done that several times and failed. So I am not sure what fish they were actually catching. Its amazing what you can do in edit to make things look real. But so many have tried to achieve this goal and failed. I have fished patterns fast in the top layers and caught fish. But not those big sipping fish. I guess what you do is spot the fish coming up for the caenis, then cast in front of the fish about 5' to 6' and time it so that the pattern comes across the fishes nose when it is about may be 2'to3' away. This is what I will do. I will let you know how I get on.
Typical, hardly any fish on the caenis today. but will try when they are. Had a great day all the same. Our water temps are dropping nicely at the moment, and the water is looking really good. Looking forward to this Autumn.

Hi Shaun, great video fantastic content, Shaun which flys or lures to you recommend to use at this time of year,
Wow this is difficult. There are plenty out there would recommend a pattern for the next year let alone the next month or even day. We can have a stab at it, but who really knows until the day we are on the water. The next one would be are they stock fish. Stock fish is easy. Bigger, brighter and often faster. To be honest quite a lot of patterns. But if the weather plays ball and we get anything like a normal Autumn. The fish would normally be on a feast to stock up for the winter. The Crane Fly {daddy long legs} is going to be high on the fish menu. I certainly would have a few light weight nymphs and small lure type patterns. These we would fish faster and higher. The reason behind this is that we already know the fish is looking up for such things as the Crane Fly. So most important is to increase your chances by keeping the pattern above the fish. If you are able to move around the water and limit what you carry. Then you will be better doing as we do. Cover lots of water and target the fish that will take. I have watched so many fail as they spend far to long trying to encourage a fish to take. Or they keep fishing the same water over and over. Fair enough if you are getting hits. If not find some new water. Keep an eye on others fishing. You will often pick up things for doing this. Are they consistently doing the same thing. If they are catching, watch the cast. How long before they start to retrieve, and what speed of retrieve. If somebody has hammered a spot give it a good half hour before moving in there. Better still keep an eye for where nobody has fished. Fish will often move to these areas on small waters if they are constantly bothered by line flash and so on. Oh one other to have handy. some thing that can skate on the surface. Sedge, Mudler or booby. This can be deadly this time of year, and great fun even for the chase. Listen don't worry about it to much, as a lot of waters will be stocking up loads now the heat is off. And your going to be fine on the stock fish. Just have fun mate. Shaun.

Yes you can use them in all conditions Ian. They are especially good in flat water. And great on the shallow waters of a river. They ain't going to rock your world. But can make those little improvements that can improve your chances. They are cheap enough and last a very long time. So if you decide they are not for you, then your not breaking the bank. A lot of the boys use them, and would not be without them. But there are plenty of people would not use them for some reason. My self I know of no negatives about them. All they are really is an extension of the fly line to turn it into a sink tip. Because they are attachable, makes them really handy. And giving the choice to switch from a straight floater to an intermediate or even a slow sink, depending how fast you want to fish the pattern at a certain depth. Hi Shaun, Another great video that leaves me thinking should I be using a leader of some sort. I mainly BANK fish reservoirs with a 3 fly cast - 12' straight through to tippet. Would it not make the entire cast too long and not achieve a turnover? Is it basically the same as a sink tip line of maybe 6' or 12'? Always great content. Weather you should be using a leader or not is your choice. Lots of people will never bother. But so many more will use a leader of some form. Its a massive market and can be confusing. This is were I come in. Not saying I have tried them all. That would be almost impossible. But for what we have tried I still rate the braid leaders. The leader is an extension of the line, and the end result is yes much the same as a tip line. However the leader is a lot cheaper than the tip line. And as I have said in the video, they last for ever. I also mentioned in the video that I had fished for over three months without and for most of the time it was fine. But I still missed it when certain situations or conditions arrive. Turn over on a short cast of 12' will not be a problem. However with three flies on in flat calm may not be such a problem as fishing one natural fly unweighted, getting through the surface. The main purpose of this leader is to get the flies below surface as quick as possible. And when fishing them at a certain speed, we can maintain a certain depth. Hope this helps. If your still unsure get back to me. But don't be to concerned about it. If you are happy with what you are doing, keep going. But if you feel that your flies are taking to long to go sub surface. Hi Steven, not quite a Diawl, more like a Bibio but not as heavily dressed. Its the Holographic Light Blue. I find the Blue and Black work really well. And this pattern has accounted for a lot of fish. Size 14 and down. If the fish are moving about a bit, and high. I will often fish this fast. But try all retrieves or static. A good one is to leave it hang for a while, then a few steady pulls, then hang again. Good luck with it mate. But a good pattern to have in the box on the ready.

Could a possible downside to braided leaders be that when you lift the line off the water to recast the braid tends to create a lot of spray thus spooking fish. Besides that, loved the video. Cheers.

Hi David I have looked at a lot of footage on calm water. And to be honest when fishing I have never noticed this problem. But to check which I have done now. There is no spray coming from the braid. Not sure if you have actually experienced this your self. Mind at the same time I would not be lifting off if there was a fish any where near my cast. There for I would not be spooking any fish, if the braid was causing this problem. To be honest with you, there are far more fly lines on the market that cause great disturbance on the surface when fishing let alone lift off. And its not just budget lines. Hi shaun what do you think of tapered fluerocarbon leaders nobody ever seems to talk about them ?
You will probably find leaders talked about more on river fishing other than still waters. Leaders can play a role in still waters, but they are not as essential as rivers. I have not used a great deal of these leaders. But what I have used, I found more memory than the braid or Furled. A lot will also depend on where you are fishing. Lake, small river, big river or even sea. And of course what goes on the end. A very large pattern say at sea will not be so effected by memory. A small pattern in a slow moving lake will be effected by memory. But the first thing about using a leader, is to understand what you want from the leader. This helps to decide what leader.
