  • In this video I will show you taking apart my Acer Nitro 5 Laptop. We will add 1 m.2 Samsung 980 SSD as well as 1 Sata Samsung 870 Evo SSD.
    The m.2 SSD was 99$
    The Sata SSD was 120$
    Hope you enjoy. Feel free to ask questions about procedure and whatnot!
    only issue was the SATA drive was not recognized at first just had to re seat the ribbon cable and all was good.
    Below you can find the written guide from the Acer website.

    I have been wanting to add an extra m.2 ssd to my laptop, but i was too scared to do so, but with gaining enough confidence (which your video played a huge role in) i finally cracked open the laptop and installed an extra m.2 ssd and then after a while upgraded the ram. Nice. Take your time. Go to ifixit.com and order a toolkit with spudgers. They are basically plastic guitar pick things or little wedge tools (depending on which style you get). This will help you pop open the clamps holding the case together without damaging it.. As for the battery thing. I realized mine was still plugged in but the pc was OFF. Not asleep. OFF. Make sure its fully powered off. The ram sticks are just held in place with a little tab from what i remember. Make sure you get the right style. It might have to be ddr4. Any time you take stuff apart dont pull too hard. If you have to pull really hard a cable might still be plugged in, tab still clicked in, or screw still in place. Always take your time and you will be happy nothing breaks and your upgrade goes smoothly.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Před 8 dny

      Hey that is an excellent question! So in this instance I was simply adding a drive, so no cloning or new install needed.
      However, If i wanted to faster speeds of the samsung drive, I could have cloned the main boot drive to the faster drive (or fresh install). Then formatted the old drive to just be another extra storage device.
      Anytime you just add a drive AND as long as you don't reformat it, erasing the multiple partitions that are created during a fresh install, no extra steps needed. It's just plug new drive in and format it (tells windows or other OS, hey here is some free storage space, us it bro) then you can start using the new drive. When installing windows it typically makes 3 or 4 partitions on that drive. Other drives that aren't your boot drive typically only have 1 partition. Thanks for watching and hope this helps your understanding.

      Nice! my suggestion is higher clock speed and 32GB just make sure the motherboard/bios allows. I don't know what speed this system will allow for RAM clock speeds. Good thing is laptop RAM isn't that expensive. Sounds like a fun upgrade. You can sell your old boot drive and old ram too to offset cost. Boom. What CPU did yours come with? I think mine was 10th gen i5. Also.... if you dont already have it, download and install samsung magician. Its a great software to manage their drives. Setup "over provisioning" with the recommended 10% free space. It will keep the drive running fast and smooth for a long time. My main drive is from july 2017 and still running strong with i want to say over 100TB written. Last suggestion... bookmark the asus webpage with the driver and bios downloads in case you need them in the future. It makes it easier if in like 2 years you forget where to find things.

      There shouldn't be any limits as far as i know. What do you mean stock? You will need to format it like shown in the video (i think around 10:00) for windows to recognize the device. If it isnt showing in BIOS try re seating the ribbon cable for the SATA drive or for the m.2 make sure its plugged in all the way. Make sure device is shut down all the way for a few mins before unplugging or plugging anything in.
      *maybe you mean the stock main drive?

    I have the same laptop and recently (the day before yesterday) I saw an Acer official video that said the opening of the back plate should be started at the exhausts side. Should have looked at it sooner. Like you, I too opened the machine from a random and now forgotten spot when upgrading the RAM to 32Gb (for faster video montage) and added a half a terabyte SSD. I underestimated my needs with this last though and the second M.2 shall arrive as soon as I can find it at a bargain price.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Před rokem

      Yea i keep finding that even if the extra price seems a bit much. Its usually better to double the storage amount you think you need. That way it takes longer to fill drives. Hopefully the video helped.

      @@TritonTv69420 Well, I had that Samsung SSD wandering around lost and unused in my toolbox (I actually have another too there, branded Kingston) and thought, "why not, it's free", or I'd have given priority to the M.2 slot. I may end up subbing it for something bigger, but only after having equipped the rig with a new maybe 2Tb M.2 drive, or maybe leave it there if the new drive results being enough, we shall see.

      Its a safety thing. Its better to do any work with no chance of power. Im willing to bet those motherboards support hot swaps but its just better to be safe. The cool thing is if you do another Samsung drive you can use Samsung Magician to clone the new one with the old. Remove and you will be exactly where you were. If you havent already i suggest installing samsung magician. Its a really good software for drive health and over provisioning. I use the suggested 10% over provisioning. My main drive is going strong since july of 2017 with tons of terabytes written.

The health management is a good tip though, thanks.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Před rokem

      For sure. The reason is pretty simple. Ssd's have what's called the block size. Its basically the minimum size of data saved at a time. Files hardly ever are the exact size of the blocks. So the internal memory controller regularly moves junk excess data around to clean up the blocks. Its like one of those puzzles with limited space. You leave space so the drive has room to move blocks around. With no room it has to do inefficient things to save and move files. The larger the over provisioning size the longer the drive is supposed to last but... you obviously lose that space.

      @TritonTv69420  Před 2 měsíci

      Hello. So first of all we need to get some terminology correct. There is no such thing as m.2 ram!!!
      m.2 is a form factor for SSD's (data storage).
      Ram is for Random Access Memory. This is not storage. It is volatile memory. Meaning it is gone when you power down the machine.
      I'm sure you are talking about the storage devices because this is what this video is about and your error suggests a few things.
      1) you may have removed your original drive???
      2) you may not have formatted your new drive (again this would only not boot like usual if you removed your boot drive)
      3) you changed the boot priority and deleted the main boot drive? I don't even think this is possible.
      check out these writeups and hope it helps!!!!!

      www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/acer/nitro-5-an515-51
      If your issue is just a formatting thing check out around this time stamp of how I format the drive... after installing a new drive you need to format the drive so that windows recognized the free space!!!

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I'm assuming you are talking about the SATA SSD. After looking at the footage a bit I think you can. As long as you get two screws in from the side (side that you can remove two vertical screws on) it should be secure in the bracket. Your main issue is you will have to attach the data and power cable before putting the SATA all the way down. So If you remove the two screws on the side that you can, then place the drive in the silver bracket and tighten those two down (while the drive is propped up with enough room to plug the power and data cable into the drive). Then plug the power and data cable into the drive, set the drive down all the way and tighten the vertically facing bolts of the silver bracket.
      The silver bracket thingy is very flexible so you should be able to bend it up with the drive on one side while the other side is still attached.
      I would try pushing harder with the driver before applying any torque to remove the bolt you might be able to break it loose unless it is just spinning. Electronics have threaded inserts and if the insert spins in where it is pressed in the bolt wont move. Hope this helps!
      **edit. Ok i suppose if you remove the battery you can plug the data and power cable into the drive after it is already all the way down. I think you got this. Worst case just set it in there and hot glue it haha

Its just a good practice. As long as you let your pc shut down all the way and dont touch metal to any connectors or with your hands you should be fine.

    How do I unplug the battery

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Před 5 měsíci

      Hello! Great question. The battery on this computer, and most laptops, is connected by a ribbon cable that comes from the battery to the motherboard. Scrubbing through the video you can pause here 8:15 (edited stamp) and see the connector(s) from that battery to the motherboard near the top of the screen (near the RAM). If you have issues I can make an unlisted video (or maybe a listed video) for you and send you the link as a reply to this comment. I didn't have any issues but it's always the safest way when working on laptops. As long as the computer is shutdown for at least a few mins the residual electrical charge in the capacitors will dissipate. People caution others to do this because if you cause an electrical short while working on it you can damage components.
      Let me know if you find the cable! I believe it is just one. All ribbon cables have a little latch that holds them down. You will pop the latch up and carefully remove the cable. An easy test to see if you got the right cable is flipping the laptop over and pressing the power button you will know it was the battery cable if nothing happens. Make sure the AC adaptor is unplugged of course otherwise it could still power on.

      Hello! Thanks for watching and smashing the like button😉. Good question you aren't the first to ask this. It's a very common concern. You do not have to clone your drives or do anything special. All you are doing with this is ADDING storage. Make sure you SHUTDOWN your device and let it sit off for a few mins before ever doing anything with electronics. If you are super concerned, unplug the little ribbon cable connected to the battery. It's just like the cable i unplug and zoom in on for the sata drive, it has a little tab that holds the ribbon cable in place. You will not lose anything if you follow the steps I do. Just make sure you are formatting the new drives which will be very obvious in the disk manager. It will be the drives that are all black meaning unformatted space. Formatting tells windows that xxx space is available to use for files. Good luck have fun and take your time removing screws and popping the clips. Anytime you take apart electronics do not force anything. If it isn't coming off double check all screws are removed and slowly pry around the edge of case.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Před 5 měsíci

      Hello good question. There are a few different types of computer data storage devices. Technology has evolved a lot since the invention of the transistor in the late 1940's. Traditionally when home computers where readily available and you had the storage capacity up to around 1 Gigabyte of data the most popular storage technology was Hard Disk Drives or HDD's. These devices required a spinning metal disk(s) to be magnetized very locally with an arm that could read this magnetization as well as magnetize the metal disk. The limitation of this tech is the speed at which the disk rotates as well as how fast the arm could move in and out of the radius of the disk as well as how fast it can read the localized magnetization. In the 2000's and 2010's Solid State Drives or SSD's became more mainstream and economically viable. Instead of spinning a disk they stored the bits on very small (microscopically small) memory cells stacked in certain arrays. This changed the game as the devices no longer required moving parts to store energy. There have been many different form factors and SSD's come in many different types as far as how they send data to the CPU. There are internal SSD's that use the SATA interface which is typically limited to 6GB/s of data transfer. There are usb sticks that use the USB interface and depending on the generation can transfer data from 12Mbps up to 40Gbps. Then the most current iteration are the m.2 SSD drives. The SATA SSD used in this video is just a device to store data (pictures, video, music, software, games, ect) which has a capacity of 500GB of data. The transfer rate maximum would be about 520-550MB/s which is not near as fast as the newer m.2 SSD's which plug directly into the motherboard above the BUS. Which is where the data is being shared between all the computer components. The m.2 storage device in this video has a max read and right or around 3000-3500MB/s.
      So the TLDR is the SATA SSD stores up to 500GB of data and I'm able to access the data at around 1/2 GB/s.
      If you want to learn more about SSD's I suggest this amazing video. This yt channel will teach you everything you need to know about computers! Thanks for stopping by.

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420  Před rokem

      That would depend on the chipset. My guess is you can swap it a bit but it would mostly be a lateral move. Laptop CPU's are not the same as desktop ones. They are binned slightly different. You need to find the chipset of the motherboard and that would tell you what cpu's it is compatible with. Also it would matter on how the cpu is actually attached to the motherboard. If it's soldered it's not really worth changing.
