Even though the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is extremely rewarding, I decided to cancel it (or rather…BOTH of them) :D
    Here’s why…
    1. I HAVE HILTON HONORS DIAMOND STATUS FOR 4 YEARS 💎
    - I originally applied & got approved for the Hilton Aspire card on 3.18.2019.
    - Hilton extended all status levels thru 3.31.2023.
    2. I DON’T NEED / WANT WEEKEND NIGHT CERTIFICATES 🎟
    - I have enough free night certificates with Marriott and Hyatt.
    - Since Hilton free night awards have no restrictions for brand, category, or point value, they’re best used at expensive properties. At the moment, most of my travels are at mid-scale & upscale properties, so I’d likely get around $150 -$250 of value (which isn’t great for an ‘unlimited value’ free night). In fact, that’s roughly the value I get from the Marriott & Hyatt certificates, which have capped values.
    3. I FIND THE $250 HILTON RESORT CREDIT TOO RESTRICTIVE 🌴
    - Only works at about 270 resort locations (4% of Hilton’s portfolio). Currently, Hilton has 6,500+ properties.
    - Link to Hilton Resorts: www.hilton.com/en/resorts/
    4. I FIND THE $250 AIRLINE FEE CREDIT TOO RESTRICTIVE ✈️
    - Only works on 1 airline from a small list of eligible airlines, currently: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines, Southwest Airlines & AirTran Airways, United Airlines & Continental Airlines, US Airways)
    - Only covers incidental charges (not airfare).
    - I cover some incidental charges with airline credit cards.
    - I cover other air incidentals with the Amex Platinum Card & Ritz-Carlton Credit Card ($500 total in air incidental credits.
    5. I FIND THE $100 HILTON ON-PROPERTY CREDIT TOO RESTRICTIVE 🏨
    - Only works at 2 Hilton brands (Waldorf Astoria & Conrad hotels).
    - Requires 2-night minimum stay.
    - Does not work for cost of the room. Only incidentals charged to the room (like food, beverage, spa treatments, etc.)
    - Must book via link (HiltonHonors.com/aspirecard) or via phone with code ZZAAP1.
    - Must book flexible rate, which may not be the lowest rate.
    6. I DON’T NEED ANOTHER PRIORITY PASS MEMBERSHIP 💳
    - Already have this with other credit cards
    7. I DON’T STAY AT HILTON HOTELS OFTEN ENOUGH ✌️
    - On average, I have 1 or 2 Hilton stays per year.
    8. I’M NOT FOCUSED ON EARNING HILTON POINTS 🔵
    - Plan A = cash back
    - Plan B = flexible and/or transferrable travel points (Amex Membership Rewards points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Capital One Venture miles, etc.)
    9. I DON’T WANT TO PAY A $450 ANNUAL FEE
Annual fees make the most sense when they:
    - Function as a prepayment for benefits you’d normally pay cash for, or…
    - Give you discounts on things that would cost more buying directly, or…
    - Give you access to things money can’t buy.
The $450 fee missed all 3 of those points for me right now
    10. MAKE ROOM FOR OTHER AMEX CARDS
    - Amex usually allows a maximum of 4 - 5 credit cards per person. I decided to cancel my Hilton credit cards to free up room for new Amex credit cards (e.g. Amex Blue Business Cash).

How important is it to get the status? Which brand is the easiest to get status considering AF & other benefits? Is the Hilton diamond worth it when traveling domestically or only int'l? I've watched many videos comparing them but it's still hard to decide which one is better. And now with gm merging with Marriott, will this make it easier to status match with Marriott?

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  Před 2 lety +4

The Airline Fee Credit on the Platinum Card vs. Hilton Aspire cards function in exactly the same way. The credit gets triggered automatically by the computer algorithm, oftentimes if it's a small amount. If it didn't work, then chat w/ Amex to have them manually process it.

For example: 264 - 50 GC = 214 dollars. I was reimbursed the 214 after 2 days. So I basically only paid 50 for a 264 dollar ticket. Using the 'Amex Trifecta' term literally, no, the Blue Business Cash does not fit because it does not earn Membership Rewards points. True 'trifectas' (at least per my definition) must earn the same type of rewards so they can be combined together.
That said, there's nothing wrong with using a different definition. If the Blue Business Cash fits into _your strategy,_ then go for it.
It doesn't matter how you define it or what I'd personally do.
Everybody's situation is different. So, what does matter is getting the cards that help you achieve your goals.

On the whole, the CSP will likely be one of the best choices 👍 The ability to use Chase points at 1.25¢ per point for hotels is fantastic, and the transfer partner opportunity with Hyatt is also among the best in the industry.

The second part of 50K points after spending a total of $10K is not that great. That's an extra $8K spend for an extra 50K points. Since those points are worth about $250 on average, that'd be a 3.1% return. Good if that were just for general spend, but not great for a welcome bonus.

Are the rental car insurances worth it? That depends. I've never used them, so I could argue 'no.' Others have used them and saved hundreds, so to them, they'd argue 'yes.'
There's also no best hotel transfer partner, or airline transfer partner, or lounge network, etc.
I think the Hilton Honors Aspire card is one of, if not the #1 best hotel credit card ever made (in its current form). However, I canceled mine and don't want it again right now. Why? It doesn't fit my wants / needs. But that doesn't mean someone else shouldn't get it.
Credit cards are like clothing & accessories. People dress in different ways according to what they like.
      --------
      - No, December card signups do not pay another annual fee in January. You pay 1 annual fee per year, and that year is based on _cardmember year,_ not calendar year.
      - Most credit card points lose value over time and are a bad investment. The worst culprits are airline miles & hotel points. The 'best' are bank points (Chase, Amex, Citi, Capital One, etc.) that have a guaranteed flat-rate value and also access to transfer partners.

@@MarkReese yes, by best transfer partner, I meant VX. My mistake.
Vx seems to have non-domestic airlines and unpopular hotel transfer partners, e.g. Wyndham and Radisson.
Even if I VX to gather Turo points, I'm curious about which VX partner offered the best return by point value.
Lastly, that math seemed like VX offer, among others, is net $0 for new members.
e.g. If VX charges at least 3 to 5% merchant fees on 4k...
      & a $400 annual fee, what's $750 (75k miles at 0.01 cents/mile) in points truly worth?

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  Před rokem +2

@@Ricocase - Same answer. There's no 'best transfer partner' with Capital One. It's possible to get great value, average value, and bad value all with the same partner. I'd recommend watching this video about how transfer partners work: czcams.com/video/ae1WayyrwnE/video.html
Merchant fees do not affect point valuations.

After watching more of these videos, I continue to see people really do over complicate things in their life. I got a Citi DoubleCash years ago and haven't looked back. Use it for everything instead of spreading my spending out over 5 credit cards. The 2% back will outwork almost any card and I don't have to book through special websites, no fee's, etc. Want an airline credit? Cool, I just got a $250 one for free with my spending this past year. What am I missing? Seems to be all smoke and mirrors. I've really tried to find another card over the years, but none of them ever seem worth it.

    • @MarkReese
      @MarkReese  Před rokem +2

Hey Matthew - that Citi Double Cash Card is great! 💯 Using a variety of cards only makes sense if you're in the maximization game (mostly for travel). It's really about travel cards that have transfer partners, which can yield a 6%...8%...12%...or greater return. That's how people turn a $5,000 vacation into a $500 one.
