The Tom Holland Uncharted movie, based on the Uncharted games, has its release date soon. But in 2011 The Adventures of Tintin movie gave us the Uncharted movie adaptation that we always wanted (besides, of course, the Nathan Fillion Uncharted fan film linked below). After three Uncharted movie trailers, its fair to say fans are sceptical over the adaptation - this video essay is for those fans who are looking for a real Uncharted movie.
This video essay looks at the Tintin movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, and compares Tintin to Uncharted, because The Adventures of Tintin is an Uncharted movie in all but name, and in many ways it is a better Uncharted game adaptation than the Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland led adaptation being released later this month on 18 February.

One of those forgotten Spielberg gems. I guess audiences were turned off by the animation style and design back in 2011. On top of this I think the target audience for this was very narrow. It was too dark for smaller kids and a bit too light and bold for older adults. I'd say it was a little bit ahead of its time in some ways.

    • @johnstrawb3521
      @johnstrawb3521 Před 2 lety +2

Meh. Spielberg's peak was wonderful, of course, albeit within a narrow range, but by 2011 that peak was over and the decline was steep. Look at all the weak tv he was exec producing, crapping out annually because I guess you can never, ever have too much money. It wasn't that audiences were 'turned off' by the animation, but that the style of animation was a very, very poor choice. Hardly 'ahead of its time.' Look at his oeuvre. A lot of it is competent, if not limp, like Hook, The Terminal, etc.

It's so well-paced and entertaining throughout, but I agree with you that it wasn't quite sure if it wanted to market itself as 'a kids movie' or for adults. All I know is that this adult very much enjoys every moment of it!

Plus the franchise isn't the super widely known massive blockbuster. That also reduces the possible audience by lack of association.

Their original plan was Jackson producing Spielberg's movie then Spielberg doing the same for Jackson's that was meant to adapt TEMPLE OF THE SUN. Since Spielberg's is said to have failed at the US box-office, we're sadly still waiting...

0:42 This scene reminds me of the ending of The Living Daylights.
3:44 Both this movie and Spectre feature a scene that plays out in one single shot (Spectre's opening scene is 6 shots joined together) and feature Daniel Craig in a central role.
4:21 Tintin looks better than most animated movies in my opinion and I still have a hard time believing that this is an animated movie. This movie always looked like a live action movie combined with CG to me.
I find it interesting that Tintin was the inspiration for Indiana Jones (Raiders of The Lost Ark) and Indiana Jones was the inspiration for both Lara Croft and Nathan Drake (Tomb Raider and Uncharted)
You should read the comics and/or watch the animated show as well if you want to know more about Tintin.
I'm looking forward to the sequel (and hopefully a trilogy) to *The Adventures of Tintin - The Secret of The Unicorn* even if it takes another 10 years with Peter Jackson directing the movie.
Btw, Happy 10th anniversary *The Adventures of Tintin - The Secret of The Unicorn!*

I actually tweeted about the similarity of the plane scene with The Living Daylights, saying it was interesting how in the Bond film they (of course) did the stunt for real while in the Uncharted movie it seems to be green screen and CGI.
Tintin looks amazing even now - they used the same motion capture systems that were used for Gollum in LOTR. I think the fact that they leaned into the cartoonish proportions just enough that it avoided the 'uncanny valley' effect of movies like The Polar Express.
      Here's hoping for a sequel!

honestly this was one of my favorite movies of all time and there is very few movies that give me that same feeling that tin tin gave me, it was honestly just so great, from casting choices, to animation, to the story and the action packed scenes. I am honestly just so sad that the script for the second movie was scrapped. I hope it is picked back up again since peter jackson loved the tin tin series so much.

The Uncharted games follow in the footsteps of the Indiana Jones movies. To make a good one, all it takes is taking a look at what made them great, and applying that to the setting.

This shot with a falcon would be cgi as hell. But probably could be done with many practical components and overlay of some shots.
Like flythrough window doesn’t require the window to be there in filming.
Shooting on water is hard but could be done with cranes or zipplines.
