I thought I will give the KTM 790 Adventure a test ride for comparison with the Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro. Just as I had thought the off road wheels have spoiled an otherwise great machine for potential on road touring capabilities. I think KTM have lost an opportunity to make a really great on road touring machine in their pursuit of being all things to all people!! The 21" front wheels are not really for the road for great distances without losing a lot of road comfort, manners and handling. Where the KTM outshines the Tiger GT in terms of delivery of the power it loses ground in nearly every aspect for on road manners to the Tiger. So for road riding and touring the Triumph Tiger GT Pro wins outright in my opinion!

Those "short person" reviews are so useful. I think it's the only channel about short rider on adv bike.
    Thanks V

Thank you so much for your encouraging words and I agree with you 100%. I am really hoping that I can do the subject justice by providing some useful feedback to short riders like me. I have watched a lot of youtube reviewers adding comments like "If you are 5*7" inch or shorter than this bike or that bike is not for you" and some similar comments which is really disheartening to hear. So I am hoping that I will get lots of subscribers on my channel and I would like continue to do regular reviews of different shapes/sizes of bikes.

I totally agree ... As a shortar5e , 5'6" with 29" inside leg, his videos are like gold dust to me :-) Answers all the questions I want to know without all the 'fluff' you get on some other channels.
      Thumbs up from me !

Good to hear you’re opinion on this bike and I understand where your coming from, I’ve just bought the 890 adv s so I’ll let you know my options after 400 miles:- the screen I have changed to the r version with a small adjustable screen fixed to it that stopped buffeting, the seat after so long feels better, the front wheel I don’t understand because I’ve had my bike on the edge of my tires on the twisty roads, im 5’8” inseam 30” and I can get both feet down comfortably. I don’t get false neutral. Ktm’s. are hit or miss bikes lucky to get a good one, unlucky to get a bad one. I do have some issues with mine but im still happy with it, keep up the good work

I had a 2018 KTM 1290 Adventure R before and I am also short (168cm). I had to replace the rear suspension with the shorter one and cut low some of the foam on the seat also set the front forks a bit lower. At the end it was about 840 cm seat height and I still had to tip toe on my boots. But I felt so comfortable on the bike and rode it well in the (heavy Jakarta) traffic and long distance (1500+ km from Jakarta to Bali with one stop). But yes the 1290 R was so top heavy since it is a BIG bike. The power was SOOOO good. Although I felt I did not need that much of power and mostly used the toned down settings (rain mode, 100 bhp). I love cruising on a bike, not racing on it. I usually did 100-120 kph max. Only once I got 186 kph and not even full throttle.
Looking at the 790 (and I did tried hopping onto one in a local dealer) I felt it is well balanced and I can comfortably touched the ground with my sneakers (not boots) but not flat footed. I didn't feel the weight at all. Maybe because it is low heavy compared to the top heavy 1290 R.
I think 790 is more suited for me.
I also owned a Kawasaki Vulcan S once, a cruiser. I liked the bike but considering the Indonesia (not so good) road condition, it was not well suited for my butt (I cannot stand up when facing road bumps) :D

I noticed that the new 890 Adenture offers a low suspension version which brings the seat height to 825mm. I will try and give it a go when it arrives in dealers in England. I am glad you're enjoying your bike. Keep safe

Interesting perspective but I think you maybe have misseout on a gem and maybe missed the point of the 790. After putting 2k on mine Id say maybe you needed more time on it to get the full picture? An owner's view on some of the issues you had: First the seat yes initially it's hard but it is really comfortable on a run i did 7 hours riding to and around the lakes and it was fine and I was happy to rode back the next day. The rear brake is decent and works well on and off road, abs is excellent but not intrusive so not sure what the issue was. The 21 inch front wheel - it's an off road orientated adv bike so 21 wheels are the norm. Was this the first 21 inch adv you had ridden? Its the most stable adv I have ridden and I owned an Africa twin but I've also riden BMW GS 8 and 1250, both tigers and I can throw round the 790 like a sporty 600 imo it's a much better all rounder than any of those bikes. You says it was a little lumpy but that's usually when you have it in too low a gear at slow speed (30 mph is 3rd or 4tu on the 790). Gear select is spot on imo. Did you wind it up? This bike comes alive between 6 and then 8 k and is really good fun. I test rode it back to back with the triumph tigers and the smaller GS and thought the 790 was a much more exciting ride and bought the 790. Off road (UK green lanes) this bike is really good for its weight and size and without using it off road I think you miss half the story. Im 5'8" and went from 3 years and 14000 miles including winter riding comuting and euro riding on a 17 plate Africa twin onto the KTM 790, I was never happy taking the AT off road but love the 790 confidence inspiring handling. Horses for courses though I guess.

You need to try that bike with a larger windshield and low seat from seat concepts. You don't want to go off road I think.
👍 Try a new Honda Rebel 1100 with the africa twin motor. Get a decent windshield for that and your good. Toss some bags on and get a trunk for the rear. Has available cruise control and can get heated grips. Golden!

Like the Tiger, these little bikes don't do the freeway well. The trany will probably improve with miles. If you want to ride the freeway a lot, get a bigger bike. I could smoke while on the freeway on my goldwing while I cannot on my Trophy. I tested the multistada 1200 then got on my Trophy and immediately thought the Trophy behaved more like a Cadillac with much smoother ride and similar power for acceleration.

Yes I agree. I really enjoyed my test ride on the R1250GS especially very slow riding in traffic and I think it's due to the telelever front suspension. I will be checking out the Ninja 1000SX next. Hopefully I'll do the editing and upload by next week.

Haha! I think you're reading my mind. Yes so far, for all the combination of comfort, "grin factor", touring capability, commuting needs, etc. the R1250GS is on the top of my list. Although, the price is a bit of worry and the maintenance costs. If only BMW Motorrad gave me one for free from the goodness of their heart! 😆

KTM doesn't offer the lowering kit for this model and I don't know if there's any after market options available. Just lowering the seat won't make much difference for me personally.
