Georgia. A silent war between the West and Russia.

  • There are accusations that Georgia’s government is pro-Russian. Georgians took to the streets to protest the Georgian law on foreign agents. The Georgian government backed down. What caused the protests? Is Georgia pro-Russian? Or is Georgia pro-Western? Do Georgians want Georgia to join the European Union or NATO? Mikheil Saakashvili’s Rose Revolution brought down the Eduard Shevardnadze government and led to democratic reforms in Georgia. But there have been accusations of excess and corruption for Saakashvili.
In this OSW documentary we travelled to Georgia to discuss with leading experts and former politicians. Are Georgians really pro-European? Or is there some lingering pro-Soviet sentiment? What is the opinion of Joseph Stalin in Georgia? How did the Russian invasion of Abkhazia and South Ossetia harm Georgia-Russia relations? How did Georgians react to the Russian war in Ukraine? Is Georgia still reforming and how is the Georgian economy performing? What does Georgian society lean towards, in light of the still significant social problems in Georgia? How will Georgia change?
Georgia is the scene of a struggle between the West and Russia, not a bloody one as in Ukraine, but Georgia is an important scene of Russian or Western influence.

This was really well balanced, well informative and good analitical documentary. Thank you!
My subjective vew: West, and I mean EU this time, on its own, need to do more. But it is just too large and too many different countries organization, that is why getting concesus will be extrimly difficalt. Otherwise, EU need to put in moution every avable tools to help most pro democratic nations, both politicaly, economicly and ofc military in some degree..

I just got back from Georgia, and visited the occupation and Stalin museums. A beautiful country and beautiful culture. My wife is hold a Russian passport, but is not Russian by ethnicity, but it was immediately apparent that there hostility towards Russians the moment we landed, to the point where when in conversation people asked where she is from, she always said she is from my home country instead.

I don't view resumption of air travel as a bad thing. Prior to the war with Ukraine and the Crimean take over there were Business dealings and tourist flights into Russia from most all Western nations. I get that Georgia is a bit unique in this regard because of the war it fought with Russia but you have to move forward at some point. So long as they continue to develop their economic status with Europe and the West they should look for stability with their neighbors as well. You don't want to live in a constant state of distrust and hatred if it can be helped.

Easy to say. But reality is different, when you have RuZZia on your doorsteps, constantly demanding and ordering you, even going at war with you..

There is a balance between what you might call good and evil, sometimes this is about how it is perceived, about certain perceptions, also though things change, do not stay the same. For 1. Russia will not loose against Ukraine, that's a dellussion. 2. Whilst the western countries have looked better for a while, especially to those young people from Georgia, things are or have changed there. A very authoritarian cultural takeover us happening. 3. The motives of the western powers to support Ukraine are far from transparrant and the outcome for Ukraine is not good either way....Georgia can follow the same fate in persuit of freedom with NATO, EU etc but will find itself similarly used and abused by the criminals of the western governments !

The same law they are protesting is part of the US foreign policy you must register as a foreign agent.

the thing is, US is pro US and theres no way that it can become puppet of another country.
in Georgias case it is a very likely scenario unfortunately, and only ngos that operate within georgia are western ones. and only thing this law will do is that it will reduce western influence and therefore automatically drag us towards russia.
Unfortunately, small and weak countries like us need strong geopolitical and economic ties and obligations to stay independent, at this time it is VITAL(and i can not express it enough) for us to be trustworthy for europe to develop trade routes, networks, foreign companies and etc to ensure that in times of troubles bad times wont just affect us but other stronger nations also which intern means that they will be standing along side us.
without all this we wont survive, our democracy, culture, history and everything unique about us will be destroyed and forgotten. we are in this situation for most of our history so this is nothing new, but although we stand strong, we are being eaten little by little, WE ARE TIRED!
