There is one thing legendary about Shashi Tharoor is that no matter what disagreements he had with the ruling party in India, when it comes to arguing with foreigners, he always represents and defends the whole India and Modi or whoever is related with India, he doesn't let the local arguments come between the foreign debates. He represents Bharat ❤

6:20 I am a 14year old from Kolkata, West Bengal, India & even my mother's great grandfather had witnessed the Bengal famine - my great grandfather's uncle, sister, & many other relatives died of starvation & lack of resources in that famine.
The fact that some Britishers still think that they improved India & other South & East Asian countries by colonizing them - is what makes me both sad & angry.

Well said. I know you truly are a 14 year old Bengali because of the way you speak/ write. I can smell the Bengali in you because I am one too even though I am North American by my documented identity.
My grandparents and parents went through the atrocities too.
I went to England as a student years ago and made them lick my rear. Felt good when they played victim….long story short, I complained on everything they did and gave them a hard time.

British of this generation and others even some Indians think British improved India because that is the way they are taught. In British schools they teach biased history, not the truth. We see some bridges and other infrastructure British built but they robbed the coutry at gun point. My father living in 1930s 40s and my grand father and great grand father all lived in povety. Native kings were forced to pay exhorbitatant taxes to the British, other wise they will attack and dethrone them. but in Kerala there were some patriots like Veluthampi Dalawa and Pazhassi Raja in early 1800s who stood up against British and murdered by British, but they died as Champions of patriotism, dignity and honor. Even the fellow Indians betrayed them.

I did a little study on the colonisation of India. And he's complete right. India was doing amazing. Then the British completely ravaged India, stole all their riches and destroyed many of their industries (another was shipbuilding... India made the best ships and so Britain essentially outlawed Indian ships). They were absolutely the bad guys. And Britain's wealth definitely came in part from what they stole and exploited of India.

Are you kidding man, there was no women education in india. How many years would you think it would have taken for 'sati' system to be banned, for woman education to be started.
It was because of the missionaries, all these happened. Check out William Carrey. And how he changed india's lot of problems.
He translated gita or vedas in bengali language. He started first degree awarding serompore University in Kolkata.
He brought printing technology to India for the first time, he brought english education for children and for girls too. He helped raja ram mohan roy to ban sati, and then after the ban, he translated the ban notice in bengali so that common people would be able to know or be aware of it.
He translated dictionaries to bengali language

If the public say they are 'proud to be British' online, there a good chance are over a certain age, or more likely to be from furthest south of England. The further south you go in the UK, the more 'British' people seem to want to be, but... the word 'British' means different things to different people. You will hardly ever hear someone from N Ireland or Scotland say 'British', especially when it has not been long after an independence vote in the latter. All countries including Wales have separate governments today too. Some people don't think of imperial history at all hearing the word 'British', because many don't know very much about it. Even some people in England are not in favour of the government or it's disconnected royal imperial past. Some in the UK will say the same about the royal family in Britain, stealing (tax money) to fund their expensive extravagant weddings and other ventures ;)

@@khalnayakshah7078 India wasn't one of the "richest" countries in the world in 1700. Per Angus Maddison, they had a GDP PPP per capita of $550 (1990 dollars.) The only consolation is that most of the rest of the world was nearly as impoverished (world average per capita: $616). What India did have was 165 million people, in a world total of 603 million.
By pre-industrial revolution standards, India's economy *did* continue to grow reasonably, more than doubling GDP from 1700 by 1950. The problem is that India's population also more than doubled, with per capita left essentially unchanged. Meanwhile, world average per capita GDP went from $616 to $2113, with total world population quadrupling. There was no running over India in industrialization; they were merely left in the dust, impoverished in the same way as before.
India wasn't ready to build the complex powered machines of the Industrial Revolution, that finally (for the first time in history) lifted common people out of horrible poverty. They were unable to produce even simple printing presses until aided by the British, with the first Nagari/Devanagari books printed in the early 19th century.

@@khalnayakshah7078 I see no serious scholarship backing the contention that the British ever cut off the thumbs of Indian weavers, especially in some famous incident. According to the blog of Sanjeev Sabhlok (PhD from USC, writer for _The Times of India),_ it is a myth invented after 1900, based on a much earlier 18th century legend that some silk spinners cut their own thumbs off as a sign of protest, rather than being impressed into working for the British.
AFAIK, the British also didn't eat babies...

    • @anonymousturtle8562
      @anonymousturtle8562 Před 3 lety +2

@@khalnayakshah7078 The British didn't prevent Indians from educating themselves. Parsis had a 79.1% literacy rate in the 1931 census, higher than the average of India today, showing that Indians who valued education could obtain such. But like today, as I'll show a little later, most Indians didn't put such a priority on education.
It's true that the British didn't do a good job of giving Indians a publicly paid modern education; but like with Afghanistan today (or under the Soviets), Indian traditionalists just got angry when the British did try to give Indians modern educations.
Among the reasons for the sepoy mutiny were teaching math and science instead of traditional religion; teaching girls and low/no caste people at all (but especially that sati was something bad, or widow re-marriage was reasonable); and disrespecting astrology.
As Amartya Sen has noted, India and China were nearly identical in most statistics in 1950. Since then, have Indians cared about education in the same way as the Chinese? Well, Chinese students today score at the very top of PISA international tests. Indian students scored last out of 74 regions in 2009 PISA+ testing, excepting Kyrgyzstan in two topics. China has many of the best regarded universities on the planet. The best Indian universities don't rank in the world's top 500, and their universities _offer advanced degrees in astrology._
The only Indians who seem to be passionate about a modern education mostly seem to have fled the subcontinent for places like Britain.
