Replacing The Square Worn Out Tires On The 1939 Ford Coupe

  • During our first test drive of the 1939 Ford Coupe we realized the tires were square from sitting and needed to be replaced. We also never looked the car over before taking it on a drive. Thankfully we survived with no issues but its time to put the 39 on the lift to take a closer look at the underside, and install some fresh tires. There may also be some lowering involved

yup, as you said, it now looks and sits great, one thing I'd do if I were working on it, would be to power wash the underside, and give it a coat of your rust encapsulator paint, to keep all that original sheet metal etc. in good condition for years to come. Thoroughly enjoy watching your vids, keep up the great work in saving all these wonderful old cars, only wished I lived on your side of the pond and could work on my own project 👍

Good choices on tires and schackle adjustments. The brake job will be neat to see too. The exhaust replacement with 1-1/2 or 2 inch and glass packs will really make it a moonshiner 😊 gotta have chrome tips too. Interesting though will be where or what is the cause of the anti freeze leak. Really enjoying this 39 and 38 work you're doing.

I really love the body style on this car , nice lines , & very solid . I got a good enough look at it with all 4 original style tires on it , so seeing the actual change to what you went to was POW ! The ass-end totally changed up perfectly , with tire up in the fender , & a Fatter look . The front was same as before , & the car was level . Just changing the shackles , & Bam ! Front end dropped just enough to match the back-end's tire tuck into the fender , & still have full turn radius . That car sets like a drag car , without anything else . New brake system , & fuel line , exhaust . I take it from what Steve said , there is a cross-over pipe up by the engine , typically ? Find & fix that coolant leak , hopefully it's something like an old rubber hose leaking . The previous owner did like to "patch" things . That banjo rear looks like it's leaking good too . Otherwise , it's turned out to be one of the best cars I've seen you get to work with . Just some little things , with the usual refresher parts . Nothing drastic , & I really don't want to jinx ya guys , so I'll shut-up there . Very nice car , sets perfectly now with new shoes , IMHO .

All the used car's I've bought that's the first thing I've done to them was the breaks on all 4 corners got redone. My Pop's and older brother are mechanic. My late Pop's would tell me you have to be able to stop before you can go! So I always took that model to save me a whole lotta money and courts in the long run. As far as tires I always put new shoes on my vehicles because I drive my vehicles everyday.
I have bought used tires knowing I was going to change them out after body work and mechanical work was done.

Love it! Did very similar on my ‘41 Plymouth coupe Shine Runner. I went with 6.00-16s up front and 6.50-16 truck tires in the back for the rubber rake. Made custom drop blocks for the rear and used dropped uprights for the front. With some original ‘41 Plymouth hubcaps and ‘40 Dodge trim rings to finish it off. It would look right at home parked next to that ‘39 ford, or on a back dirt road in the Appalachian mountains!

Dad bought a '51 Ford coupe at auction. Dual exhausts and blue dot tail lights. I was about six and thought that car was great. When the exhaust rusted out, he went to a stock system, which broke my heart. When a tail light broke, he couldn't get blue dots for replacements.
The 39 looks just about perfect. Upgrade the dual exhaust, but keep it!
Having grown up with black and white TV and photography, another grey car does nothing at all for me... Black, white, and grey were all you could see back then. Give me color!
Dad worked for a supplier of industrial rubber and plastics. I worked there part time when I was old enough. They sold shredded asbestos by the scoop from an open barrel on the store floor. Would love to see the health histories of all the people who worked there in their later years. Dad died with no lung cancer, but not sure about anyone else.

I'm more of a purist, but not really angry at what you have done to the 39. It does look cool with the slightly raked stance. Although I would still leave it at the stock stance, it looks better than the tail dragger look of the 38. Still, this cool car is getting welcome needed treatment from guys who know what they are doing. You're doing a good job. I notice the taillight on the passenger side is a blue dot light. This was a popular hot rodder treatment in the 1950s and 60s. It wasn't legal everywhere, and now I see it's making something of a comeback. Looking forward to the next video.
