This is priceless... "I took Italian because I may have to play overseas..." It wasn't that he or we knew he would "make it," but rather this is how tenuous the future is for an athlete with dreams. Love JJ and this is great fun.
His realistic thinking is what helped him stay in the nba for the time that he did. Theses guys swear they're as good as bron and when someone tells them they're not even jj they flip out and out of the league in 3 years instead of finding a way to maximize their ability to play for 10+ years
JJ's practical and realistic, which helped him carve out the career he did. If melo did the same a bit earlier, he would've have contributed even more as his aged. Melo's skills should not have been out of the league near the end of his career. it was more his mental approach that prevented him from securing another nba job. But he did get that houston job purely because of his reputation. He was already getting sour at that point about his role after the okc stint

Yea it’s about being realistic with yourself. And then maximizing
Aaron Gordon and Micheal Porter Jr are two players who have bought into their role. They are realistic in that they thrive better as #3 and #4. I admire these guys.

That story from JJ is wild. Imagine if he never stuck to the plan coach K had for him at duke. The ups and downs are always fascinating to hear.

Nah I remember even when he got drafted a lot of people didn’t think he’d make it in the nba. Shooting wasn’t considered as valuable back then, athleticism was valued much higher.

I respect the humility but JJ was the man in college. I despise Duke but everyone knew JJ was a sniper. This is a great conversation because when you’re in the moment you don’t realize certain things.

MPJ should adopt this mindset. He can stay having his killer mentality, but he is so much more powerful as a role player, and can truly become the best role player there ever was, thanks to those around him.
Say what you want, but JJ is a humble genius, knows what’s going on around him and is always self aware

JJ needs to be an ambassador for Duke and try to make the program likable.
The year JJ was in college he was the best player in College basketball he would shoot the leather off the ball he was a bad man and he was pretty dam good complimentary player in the NBA no one could shoot it and drop like 30 off the bench if he had of gotten the greenlight he would if been a all-star caliber player alot of the role players just don't get that greenlight.
Nobody can call him a liar but I find that crazy to believe. JJ was always going to get drafted because of his shooting.
yes but there was worries about his effectiveness in the league when the ball is NOT in his hands. he wasn't athletic (nba standards) negative wingspan. his defensive instincts were never good in college. He really could've gone the jimmer fredette route... still drafted into the nba but definitely did not stick. and the first few years of jj's career was looking a lot like jimmers. but he definitely worked his tail off to stay around as long as he did. no lie he definitely maxed out his potential
@@Tommie22x my larger point is that he was always going to have a spot as a floor spacer. Guys like Jimmer had to learn how to play off the ball whereas JJ could definitely do that.
@@jamesball9608you have to remember JJ is a smaller guard and no team would trust him as a defender bc of his frame. Coming out of college his handle was not worth mentioning either so you weren’t going to have him run any offense. His skill set always screamed NBA role player which is fine but he had to get his shooting numbers up to S tier standards to survive as he stated. No way was he going to get by being a 35% shooter from deep like most NBA role players. NBA was also just a different game back then. Todays game fits him way better.
Self doubt is crippling. You could be the literal best in the world at what you do. But the moment self doubt hits, it's over.
And he had a negative wingspan at 6’4 not very encouraging
There’s a short list of dookies I respect and JJ was always one of them. Even as a little kid I admired how he went and destroyed everyone despite being the most hated player in basketball (aside from Kobe) for almost 3 years straight.
