THIS STORY:
Richard Speck was an American mass murderer who systematically raped one and tortured and murdered eight student nurses from South Chicago Community Hospital on the night of July 13 into the early morning hours of July 14, 1966.
At 11:00 p.m. on July 13, 1966, Speck broke into the 2319 E. 100th St townhouse in Chicago's Jeffery Manor neighborhood; the townhouse was functioning as a dormitory for student nurses. He entered and, using only a knife, killed Gloria Davy, Patricia Matusek, Nina Jo Schmale, Pamela Wilkening, Suzanne Farris, Mary Ann Jordan, Merlita Gargullo and Valentina Pasion. Speck held the women in a room for hours, leading them out one by one, stabbing or strangling each to death, then finally raping and strangling his last victim, Gloria Davy. One woman, Corazon Amurao, escaped death because she crawled and hid under a bed while Speck was out of the room. Speck possibly lost count or might have known eight women lived in the townhouse but was unaware that a ninth woman was spending the night. Amurao stayed hidden until almost 6 a.m.
Two days after the murders, Speck was identified and then attempted suicide. The Starr Hotel’s desk clerk, where he was renting a room, phoned in the emergency around midnight. Speck was taken to Cook County Hospital at 12:30 a.m. on July 17. At the hospital, Speck was recognized by Dr. LeRoy Smith, a 25-year-old surgical resident physician, who had read about the "Born To Raise Hell" tattoo in a newspaper story. The police were called. Speck was arrested.
On April 15, after 49 minutes of deliberation, the jury found Speck guilty and recommended the death penalty. On June 5, Judge Herbert J. Paschen sentenced Speck to die in the electric chair, but granted an immediate stay pending automatic appeal. The Illinois Supreme Court subsequently upheld his conviction and death sentence on November 22, 1968.
On June 28, 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Speck's conviction, but reversed his death sentence, because more than 250 potential jurors were unconstitutionally excluded from his jury because of their conscientious or religious beliefs against capital punishment. On November 21, 1972, in Peoria, Judge Richard Fitzgerald re-sentenced Speck to from 400 to 1,200 years in prison (eight consecutive sentences of 50 to 150 years). He was denied parole in seven minutes at his first parole hearing on September 15, 1976, and at six subsequent hearings in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1987, and 1990.

Hey everybody I just want to clarify something from my research before doing this episode. Nina Jo Schmale “Nina” is pronounced the way I pronounced it. In life, her name was not pronounced “NEEENAAA” like we all have heard it.
It’s an oddity, but I do my research and in doing so, I listened to a radio broadcast (wgnradio.com/bill-leff-wendy-snyder/honoring-the-memory-of-the-richard-speck-victims/) where her brother found those magnificent colored slides, they all refer to her as phonetically pronounced: “ NINE - NAA” (like the number 9).
I am new to your channel, I am a great fan of lamont at large, but for me there is room for both of you!!!! Speck was a monster. When he died in prison, no one claimed his body. The family didn't want him. He took the lives of 8 promising young women who would've made the world a better place. He missed one of the nurses as she hid under the bed. In court, she was asked to point out the man who committed the murders, and she got down off the stand, walked right up to him and pointed right at him, and said, "This is the man!" May Speck rest in eternal torment. I also searched Kristine Renae Cilella and found that she died at age 51. She had 3 children and one granddaughter. The obit did not say how she died, but she had passed away at home. Thank you, sir for your wonderful videos and diligent work!

@Ladyintheriver Castin Individuals who die while incarcerated can be buried and given a funeral much like any other person who passes away. An immediate family member, spouse, or otherwise authorized person may claim the body and assume responsibility for the costs and process of funeral planning. As I said earlier, Not one family member came to claim his body.

I was 11 when this happened, living in a suburb of Chicago. My girlfriends and I were having a sleepover outdoors in a tent the day of the murders. My mom made us move the tent onto the patio with the entry flap facing the sliding door to the family room. She spent the night watching over the tent. I don't think at 11 I fully grasped what had happened, and my parents didn't divulge any details about the murders, just that they had happened. I learned a great deal from this video. Very well put together and as always, compassionate and respectful.

Funny, my best friend and I were sleeping out in my backyard the night after the murder and before his capture. The local radio said that he might be at large downstate (I lived in Champaign, IL then) and my mom came out and made us come in the house. It was the night of my 16th birthday so I remember it well.

Nurses rock! 💞 I am a retired Registered Nurse. Nursing is HARD work and you have to be smart too. May they rest in peace and may their memories be a blessing. 😇 I love your channel and the stories. You must do a lot of research as well as driving.
I too am a retired RN, it is very hard work. I remember this, I was 6 yo and my cousin lived at a nurses dorm at a nurses school at the time. I remember being afraid how horrible it was.
My grandmother is a nurse. She influenced both myself & my mother to become nurses. I remember the first time she told me about these women. She was a new nurse at the time of this tragedy; she said herself & her fellow nurses were absolutely terrified. I could still hear the fear in her voice the many, many years later. Thank you for honoring them!
My dad was a Merchant Marine during that era. He shipped out of New York on a regular basis. I originally heard the story about this tragedy from him. May G-d embrace these Nurses forever in his loving arms.
One nurse hid and Speck forgot about her, she testified against that monster. I remember this in 66, very sad. 😢
She was from the Philippines. She ended up going back to live there. But really can you blame her? So horrifying.

@@sandranorman5469 I never heard anything about that. But honestly my mom never talked about it. After learning about the nut job, I would definitely doubt it. I think after going through that horrifying ordeal, I think the last place I would stay is in an unfamiliar city without my family.
I'm glad she survived. She was able to identify him. I can't even imagine the trauma that she went through.

After the trial, the lone survivor never ever spoke about the murders until many years later when Speck was dead . That poor woman saw and heard most of it from under the bed and had a hard time dealing with it, as I believe many others would. RIP to all the nurses who were murdered by that perverted piece crap. A very nice respectful tribute to all those involved.
Such a sad and Tragic story, needlessly killed at the high point of their lives. Worked so hard to get their degree and their lives cut short 3 weeks before graduation. These ladies could have helped so many patients. I myself worked as a nurse full time for 30 years. Rest in the arms of Jesus ladies. I remember being at my Grandma's house and this news came over the radio. I was 6.
He truly was an evil person. Makes me mad when people like this, that do unspeakable things are allowed to grow old in prison.

When asked about the murder victims he said..."they just had a bad day." I was 13 yrs old when this happened. I remember reading about it all in life magazine. It scared me to death what these lovely women endured. Rest in peace. I'm so glad at least one young nurse got away alive. I wish her the very best in life. Nurses are ANGELS on earth! 🙏💖

I was a young girl when this happened my Mothers cousin was one of the detectives on this case I remember over hearing terrible things about these poor nurses. Speck was evil! He’s burning in the lake of fire. How brave was the surviving nurse. God bless each one of them and their families.
I was a very small child when this happened. The only thing I have is a vague recollection of one of the surviving nurses rolling underneath the bed. It was around the time that Charles Whitman did those horrible shootings from the clock tower in Austin. TV was not what it is today. We only had 2 channels. People would talk about these things in a low voice, not to traumatize the kids!
Corazon Amurao, was the nurse that survived by rolling under the bed. God Bless this nurse that went on to testify against him.

I love that you focus on the victims (I've recently researched this case and had hardly heard any of the stories you told here!) and you talk about them as if you really knew them. The way you tell stories of their lives makes it almost sound like these girls were friends of yours or even family. I understand why people find murderers and deviants to be "interesting", but the main focus should always be on the people whose lives were stolen. All of these women sounded like lovely people.

My mom was in the same class with those nurses. She lived at home then but she spent time with them. I met two other nurses who were in the class as well. I never got to learn how it really affected her because she passed away when I was young. But I'm sure that sticks with a person.

My uncle was at a bar in Old East Dallas when he was accosted by Speck, who kept insisting on buying him (my uncle) a drink after he politely declined the offer. My uncle, irritated, finally told him to go elsewhere in the bar away from him. Speck, in turn, responded by drawing a knife then stabbed my uncle in the stomach. He survived the incident, and it wasn't too long afterwards that we heard of these horrible murders. To all of his victims may they rest in peace.

My husband's father worked for ABC news in Chicago when this massacre occurred. He was one of the first on the scene and was allowed access to the dormitory/apartments before the officials closed the crime scene. Despite DECADES of experience prior and afterwards, of war scenes, riots, etc., 'Pa' said it remained the most heartbreaking and gruesome scene/sight of his career/life. I actually can't believe that the building still stands. Seems quite disrespectful, for if ever a site worthy of a memorial, one would think this it. THANK YOU Ron, for keeping the memories of these young women, who'd chosen a helping career, alive. Indeed, may Speck's victims Rest in Peace. :(

I remember learning about this crime and seeing the footage of the Speck trial in Peoria where I grew up. The trial was held in the courthouse where my mom worked. Despite all the things happening in that building, I had a lot of fun there and it felt so eerie to see that evil man being driven and walking over ground I walked hand in hand with my mom.
RIP, ladies. I cheered when I read the story of the last Filipina nurse, Corazon, who fearlessly identified that scumbag in court.
I'm a nurse so this is particularly heartbreaking to me. I see their faces but also my fellow nurses in these pictures. Thank you for such a wonderful tribute to them. Too many times we only hear about the perpetrators in these stories. I could walk behind you all day just to listen as you do these videos. Please continue because you're doing a great thing.

When someone chooses to take a life, they take the lives of many more than just the victims. It sickens me that we have so many cowards who cause so much pain and sufferings. Satan promised God that he would "reign with blood and horror upon this earth, and he certainly kept his promise unfortunately.

I was a seven-year old child when I heard of this very terrifying incident. When the news broke, I did not know how I should feel. It opened my eyes about how bad some people are and the thought that peoples' lives end. I had so many questions but my folks at the time did not want to talk about it any further. Their reason is that the topic was strictly for adults. During the start of the video, when you mentioned about the nurses who were murdered, I had to stop what I was doing and focus on your presentation. I am thankful to you for sharing your detailed knowledge of this very tragic incident. I hope that the memories of these seven nurses would never be forgotten by future generations. All my best.

I worked as a RN for about 45 years here in Houston, Texas. I was 16 when this horror occurred, and I have never forgotten thus!! I worked with many, many wonderful Filipino nurses over the years.

I remember this awful crime. My parents attempted to shield their 8 year old girl from this but it was impossible. I remember Corazon's story of hiding under the bed while her friends died. I am so glad that you gave a joyful humanity to these young women. Their lives were rich with love. Their deaths are only a small portion of their 20- 25 years. Lord have mercy on them and their loved ones.

Beautiful Tribute. As a young girl this gave me many nightmares. I became a Nurse later in life and school security saw to it that we were protected from orientation day to graduation. I know what this monster did in prison in his later years…all at the taxpayers expense. You tastefully addressed this and when I served as a State Representative we were faced with voting on the death penalty. I used this case as an example of how taxpayers can be hoodwinked into funding such deviant behavior behind bars. God Bless You 👍🏽🙏🏽♥️

Well the story is tragic about the nurses who lost their lives, and how their life came to an end because of this killer Richard specks, I never heard of this story until now October 28th 2020, how they were looking forward to becoming nurses and how it became good friends with one another, a time in their life became such a tragedy , senseless killings, may they all rest in peace. He was pure evil, that dwelled within the world.
I have read that Speck lived like a king in prison with access to drugs and about anything else he wanted. If so, this is despicable.
It's a shame they didn't all attack him at once. After reading about many killers, it seems the best chance is early, before anyone is tied up or disabled. Had several jumped on him, maybe at least one of the others could have run out and gotten help. I remember reading about this when it happened. Such a waste of productive lives.

I was 10 years old and still living in my hometown of Joliet when this horrific event occurred.I have thought about it most often throughout the years.This video is so very well done in that it pays the utmost respect to the young women
My ex husband always told about two texas rangers who came to Kansas City to take him to Houston . They warned him about being a problem on the trip and said he'd be put in the trunk. He was pretty sure they were serious, so he behaved himself. On the way , they talked about speck and told my ex that not long before the murders, they had taken speck from chicago to dallas to testify about something, he'd given them a bunch of grief, kicking, spitting, etc, so they 'trunked' him , as soon as he was released, he went to chicago, and same week, he was famous. He had told the rangers that they hadn't heard the last of him . I have no way to know if this is true, but my ex was pretty roudy, and afraid of nothing, except Texas rangers, so i always wondered about this.
I remember this as a kid, so shocking at the time, unfortunately these mass crimes just seem to get more commonplace as time goes on.

I heard about this story back in nursing school in 1980. Our school put up gates in the stairwells so the nursing residence was protected after these events. My Mom told me the story , and told me the story before I went to school, so I would aware since I attended nursing school in NYC. I love your research, and how you humanize the victims. God rest their beautiful souls, angels in heaven. Too young to die.
In 1966 I was also a young nurse, although not in the USA. I remember hearing about these young ladies at the time. May they all Rest In Peace.
I was eight years old when this happened. I heard about it on the TV News and the radio. It scared me so bad! But, I don't think my parents knew I had heard about it. For several years, I was so afraid that Speck or someone like him, was going to come in our house, and kill me. If I heard a strange noise, I would get under my bed and hide. I used to think about how that one nurse must have felt as she hid under the bed. It had to be so terrifying!
I wonder how many children were affected in the same way that I was by his evil deeds?!?!

My mom was a nursing school student when this happened. She lived near the starved rock area… Corazon was a hero for getting Speck caught for sure. I became a nurse too❤
What a tribute to these nurses! you showed each life and it's importance, including her family background, and that each life had meaning, beyond the awful end. God bless each nurse, and the impact she had on the people around her, though her life was short.
I remember the Simon & Garfunkle version of Silent Night with the news announcing the murders of the nursing students playing in the background.

This was such a beautiful tribute...My mother graduated from nursing school in 1966, and she lived in a house with other nursing students. I'm a 3rd generation nurse. I miss my Mom. RIP

I just did the tomb of Elbert Gary the founder of my hometown Gary Indiana & found the grave of one of his victims Nina Jo Schmale in Wheaton Cemetery..also did the Speck murder scene..great channel thanks for sharing
I can remember this hideous nightmare so well. I was 12, oldest of 4 children living in a Detroit suburban area, and our mother was an R.N. Supervisor at Wayne County General Hospital. The medical community is like one extended family in some ways, and this tragedy impacted everyone. It was also not too temporally removed from the time sociopath John Norman Collins, the "Boy Next Door," had been murdering women in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti region. And the War, and The Detroit Riots were also part of the times. So much fear and rage. Not a peaceful time for life on Earth...
I've seen so much about these murders, but the individual nurses get lost in the story. So this is such a powerful video. The victims' families-- decimated by grief and heartache--a life sentence for them. RS is the exact reason a state needs to have and use the death penalty. What he did to those girls, and what he did in prison--horrific--would have continued to torment and retraumatize the families and the survivor when they had to face the possibility of parole. When the four students from Idaho were murdered, I thought so much about these young women--just on the cusp of their lives.
I also appreciate how you stop to look at other graves that catch your eye. So touching and important. The windchimes gave me chills. So thoughtfully done. Thank you.

I remember this case really well, as it was huge national news. I had decided at age 7 or so that I wanted to be a crime fighter like my hero Batman, and I actually made a folder about the case in an attempt to solve it. I was glad when Speck was caught, even though it was without my “assistance”. Those poor young ladies.

Thanks so much for this most thought-provoking backstory. That was when I was living in Homewood IL. and I remember when that happened so well. I graduated in '66. I had never heard anything about the nurses. You really did your homework with this one, much appreciated. And then at the end, you played one of my favorite songs from my favorite singer/musician! may he and the nurses rest in peace.

I noticed you speaking about women's sources of employment in the 60s, which was interesting. I didn't want to go on to college so I attended cosmetology school and became a hairdresser for about five years in Illinois. I got bored with that and so then moved to California and got a job as a flight attendant (Western/Delta Airlines). The flight attendant job had so many perks and advantages it was amazing. It definitely was the right move.

I was 12 years old at the time these beautiful young women had their lives stolen from them. I remember my mother telling me how heartbreaking and shocking this was and how one young nurse had hidden under the bed and escaped. Thank you so much for telling their stories and for allowing us to learn their names and see their pictures from happy times in their lives. May they all rest in peace 🙏🏼
I remember this, I was 15 at the time growing up in Chicago. I remember for years I thought about this and always being afraid. I guess you might say I had some PTSD just knowing this happened.
Thank God a nurse survived. I imagine what she witnessed left her severely scared.

I have watched many true crime shows and look at CZcams daily, and this is the first time I have seen anything on this subject. I was 12 when this happened and never forgot it. For some reason it didn't get the attention some high profile murders did. Thank you for remembering these young women and telling this story. Blessings to the eternal spirits of those who perished at the hands of the monster, their families and all who were involved in bringing him to justice.
I was eleven years old and still remember the pictures all in the newspaper. A terrifying time. It will never leave me. The next year the big tornado hit Oak Lawn just a block from my home. I don’t like the 60,s and the then nags that happened back then.. I don’t know how anyone can currently live in the same building the murders took place. Thanks for telling us the background of these lovely women. All I remember is the newspaper pictures of the crime. 😢
My wife was working in the emergency room when they brought him in from the prison when he died.

Ron this is your best video by far, telling this very sad murders of these young women. I had always heard is name but never knew what he did. I was 4 years old when this happened and I remember my father was afraid of leaving my mom alone, he worked nights, he was an engineer for B and O railroad. My family didn't live to far from the murder scene. It brought me to tears thinking what the parents had to go through. I love the sound of a train too Ron it always reminds me of my Father. My mother was in nursing school at the time. It was scary. She later worked with a nurse at Minot, ND who was studying in Chicago when the murders happened. She would not walk across a parking lot at night without an escort.

What an absolute monster of an entity, I wont call him a m-n, because he never was , Just a horrible, thing who destroyed whole families, I really do hope to god, there is some heavy price to pay for their sick crimes,after they have left this life.Those poor nurses, We remember them with great fondness and respect, forever !!

I am sure God put this demon in a special spot in hell that we cannot even imagine after he was judged by Him for ALL of his "offences" during his life. It gives me comfort to know he will remain in torment for the rest of all eternity!

I been in prison with old timers that did time him him. He did a painting in joilet yard on wall. I couldn’t figure out why nobody put bone crusher in him like deserved. They tryed killing gacy in chester. Those poor nurses.
