      @raeishimura Před 2 měsíci +76

@@RyotoMatsu Many Americans face poor education and systems that don't support them. Now, I definitely agree that footage is most likely faked, because I have never in my entire life met someone who can't recognize the US on a map, or identify other continents, or knows at minimum the general area of a country. Now, knowing the entire world map, no. The other thing is that Americans generally don't leave America, so it's not as big a deal. America is enormous, and it is literally possible to take multiple days to travel across a single state. Because of this, most people in America just learn where things in America are, because the chances of them ever even leaving the country for the majority of Americans is non-existent.

@@krisveliviaYou're actually right. That clip is from Jimmy Kimmel and while they do occasionally show real dumb responses to easy questions, most of the time they alter the clips to make the people look worse. For example, the clip may show someone asking "where on this map is the USA?" when in reality they actually asked "point to Brunei", "where is Kyrgyzstan?"
I used to go to a music/recording school literally a block away from the show (M.I on Hollywood and Highland) and would see them taping these segments on occasion. Some of us got curious once after class so we walked over and they make it clear before you sign the release that they can and will alter the footage to make you look dumber. A classmate was going to do it but changed his mind because he didn't want to be ridiculed by people for a disingenuous comedy segment.
Edit - to be clear, the clip showing the physical map on a stand asking "where is the US" is the one from Jimmy Kimmel

This gives the US a lot of soul. What you don't see a lot of in the South American countries is zoning. Cities and towns are built using the old European model, which allows for much more human interaction. There are cities like this in the US, but they are also the most expensive places to live.

Work in chat customer service, it's often like you're talking to yourself. Not only do they not read, if they do manage to read it, they actually need it broken down, sometimes very simple information is incomprehensibly for them, and often times instead of accepting that they didn't understand, they get into this entitled mindset and just go feral. further looking like an idiot in the process. Chat is very easy work to do, esp when you can type and think fast
But as a person that's often ahead of people, I must say it's truly annoying to give a customer the exact information they need and watch them trip over it and then u have to spoon-feed them in smaller bites like a toddler until they get that you can't board a flight, complete the reservation and then get a refund because the Airport staff was rude to you.
Or providing a link on how the charges for changing a flight will cost, assuming they read the link and then when you present the charges for the change they requested, they're confused and need a "breakdown"... Then I have to breaks down the the breakdown. Wild stuff.
A word that constantly leaves my mouth involuntarily at work is... "did this person go to school?"
And Id rather not start on their amazing grammar and consistency in misspelling simple words, cause you know, you're typing so u may slip up on the keyboard, it's fine, but don't be getting mad and constantly misspelling the exact same words in every sentence..... I agree. The Enlightenment was a paradox where great insight into the sciences and arts was made, but there was destruction of cultures and economic systems outside of Europe. What Enlightenment critics get wrong is that "reason" is responsible for colonialism and slavery, which is bullshit. It was the lack of reason and questioning one's own biases that led those atrocities. We can agree with the achievements of rational inquiry and condemn colonialism. It's not an either or case.

Children and teens are out there playing and interacting with each other all the time. Just having safe and affordable access to spaces like these is all most people need. They will use them.

As an American teen who recently lived and went to school in England for a year, I know firsthand just how little Europeans deem our geographical knowledge. Firstly, to answer your question, the average American public school curriculum does not include a formal geography class. That being said we do typically learn about the different US states in elementary school, usually within social studies/history class. However, like I said, we learn about the states... so the class is limited to American geography. Therefore, yes the average American does not know a lot about geography outside of America, and while I do believe this is an issue, I don't think It's so fair to judge Americans quite as harshly as Europeans often do. The average European does not truly understand just how big and diverse America is. Our country is GIGANTIC and the different states have very different cultures, in some cases even comparable to the cultural differences between European countries. I'm from Nyc and I just started at a college in a state called Wisconsin, I'm sure you've never heard of this state. Most of the kids at this college are from Wisconsin themselves and I find it very difficult to relate to them, their culture is really different from mine. Similarly, like this video mentioned, most Americans don't go outside of the country to vacation, because they can really just fly across the country to discover a different culture/climate/ lifestyle, it take me the say amount of time to fly to LA from NYC as it does to fly to London: 8 hours (It takes someone in London 2 1/2 hours to get to Paris BY TRAIN! Chew on that). Again, I don't really condone this, as I still think Americans should experience perspectives from outside of the country, but you get the point I was trying to make. Overall, what I am trying to say is that, yes, although America is not quite as big as Europe, the country almost functions like a continent in some ways. Therefore, although it is still an issue that we are quite ignorant in learning about the rest of the world, the rest of the world is somewhat ignorant too, because they lack some perspective on the situation and the actual size of our country- AND, personally, I would appreciate if British people would stop asking me if I can name all 7 continents, I'm a New Yorker, I know my shit.- Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk (:

I love that the examples of American influencers in this video aren't that far off from UK influencers. When it comes to social media, hype, trends, consumerism etc., UK is ''the America of Europe''.
My friend once said: ''Most of us immigrants here in the UK are people who couldn't get to the US.'' I found it funny when she said it but when I thought about it, I realised that she was right. UK is the closest you can get to the American culture in Europe.
I'm not saying that one way of life is better than the other. I grew up in Europe and I love it here, but I also like the US and I go there every year because I enjoy spending time over there as well.
But, I have also noticed that people in the UK love talking about issues in other countries to make it seem like they don't have enough of their own issues. I remember when in early 2000s UK media and politicians were obsessively talking about ''racism in Eastern Europe'' because the governments over there weren't able to help those huge Gypsy communities (originally from India). UK media and politicians were calling them racist because those governments were trying to help their own people before helping others. But when several of these countries joined the EU, hundreds of thousands of Gypsies moved to the UK (especially the Northern parts). After a while, UK realised that their way of life is way different to most Europeans and that it is not as easy to help them, but the UK loved calling other countries racist. And the funniest thing is that many Gypsies are now moving back to Eastern Europe when UK turned out to be worse.
I like the UK, but it is really annoying that the media, politicians and YT ''influencers'' are now focusing on ''what's wrong with America'' instead of looking in the mirror. It was the same during the Brexit saga when everything in Europe was bad and the UK was perfect. That didn't age well either.

Absolutely correct, along with a healthy overdose of blind patriotism brainwashing started out by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance daily in gradeschool and being told how much more "lucky" and "free" and "better" we all are than everyone else. Ignorant people that don't think critically are easier to control, and people who have bought into how "wonderful" something is, even when it really isn't, are far less likely to rise up against or criticize it.

I'll tell you as a European that has traveled to the US for the past 15 years, often and for extended stays. In my experience there is a disconnect, what is perceived as "Stupid" seems to be concentrated in the new upper middle class, and in particular in large urban centers. The people I've met in middle America, the south or even smaller towns on the coasts might not have the high degree of formal education but they are curious and aware that they lack said education. I cant express how cool it is to have a farmer from Ohio genuinely curious and in awe of meeting me , a random douchebag from 7 thousand miles away. They key difference is that the "Towny" American wants to learn.
This is also becoming an issue in Europe as well, particularly with younger generations. My neibour a 20year old dude literally can't name the countries we border, and perhaps my final point is that what is often overlooked are the British, by far as bad as the worst American stereotypes, just lacking self awareness.

My monthly expenses also went down, and jobs are everywhere.
