I've literally just finished this book, and I largely agree with what you've said, but I disagree about it needing to be three books. I think the duology was enough and I don't think there was enough plot overall to sustain a third book. However, I think the pacing of the second book needed a lot of work. The book was very relationship focused for the first 250 pages, and then they had to cram the whole Night Empress plot into the last 150. If the balance had been better between the two, it would have been a more satisfying read. Instead, Chupeco decided to park the plot for a while to develop the romance instead of developing them together. Overall, it needed less romance and fewer sex scenes, and more plot development.
