Today we are getting rid of the annoying brake dust on the Cadillac ATS-V. I was sick of the brakes making all kinds of dust after barley driving the car. You could drive it to the end of the street and back after washing and the wheels were completely coated in brake dust. I also did this on my CTS-V and it makes a huge difference. I think the replacement pads give up a small amount of braking but that is worth it to keep the wheels clean. In this video I show you how to install new brake pads on you ats or atsv.
Hit the comments and let me know what you think of the new look.

You make some of the highest quality videos on CZcams. I learned from my father to not zoom up to a stoplight and jam on the brakes. I went 85,000 miles on my last commuter car before I had to do the brakes, and only pads. The previous one was 65,000, The current one has 55,000 and I haven't had a problem and the pads look good. Zooming up and jamming on the brakes keeps Midas and Meinike in business! Keep up with your great videos. You are a CZcams star!
Thank you. I agree. Brakes can last a long time if used properly
I always replace our brakes with Powerstop drilled and slotted rotors with their extreme brake pads!! I love them too and you are right about their carbon ceramic extreme pads. They don’t leave the black dust. Again Travis you have major league OCD!!! Keep up the videos - we love
your content!!
Thank you. I love the new setup
Those thick gloves you’re wearing is like GOLD! I normally use the 7mil gloves from harbor freight and I can do any job and they are a life saver!
I do love them
Thank you for this video brother I'm about to do my brakes as well for the first time since recently purchasing my V thank you for this video it was a huge help diving into this attempt. 👍🏼
Thank you. Glad I could help
Beautiful car Travis. Good information to know. Thanks.
Thank you
Thanks for the video Travis, this will make brake-day that much easier 👍🏽 (16’ V Silver Sedan)
You're welcome. Glad I could help
I was looking at some of these for my Camaro SS, good to know. Thank you.
They work great
Always a good clean vid T! Thanx, J
Thank you
You should ceramic coat those wheels, makes a huge difference and dirt and grime just rinse right off
I did a spray on coating
The OEM pads on my ‘17 ATS-V also put out a ton of brake dust.
I may coat the wheels to make it easier to clean since I like the stopping power of the OEM pads.
Can't notice much difference
The algorithm hath spoken. I need to do this on my 12 CTS-V once the factory pads are used up. They have tons of brake dust!
Yeah it's a crazy amount of dust.
Great video and thanks for sharing. A long time ago I learn how to change breaks and the trick was to make sure to open the cap on the brake fluid in the engine. So when you push the calipers with a C Clamp the brake fluid will self-adjust back. Of Course, make sure you put a rag around the brake fluid in case of overflows. Doing this way you do not have to bleed the brake lines. Question was it difficult to remove the entire Brembo caliper?
I never remove the cap but some do. Not hard to remove at all.
Good video, need to do a follow up see if how them pads are working out.
I might just do that.
What year is that Cadillac? I like those wheels what size are they ? Thank you 🙏🏽
17. Wheels are 18s
GM rebrands Ferordo 1000 racing pads on these cars. Brake dust means the brakes are working! I track this OEM setup and have great results. Your better upgrade option is to change to DOT4 fluid, such as Castrol SRF like I use. A simple powerwash on cold wheels gets rid of 75% of the dust without scrubbing. Also, 110 ft-lbs is a typo in the manual. Should be 140.
Thanks for the info
Not if the lugs are silver tint. Those are 140. Blue tint are 110.
That's what I found also
Nice tutorial Travis. Caddy is clean underneath. Who put the tires on before you did? They should know the the torque settings...
GM dealer I'm sure
@@TWAMotorsports GM knuckle heads never torqued the specs of the lugs... I was a Master tech at GM. Back in the days before I joined the Navy... I can't tell you how many mistakes I seen technicians make because of rushing.... I actually seen a oil lube tech forget to put the oil drain bolt back in what a disaster..
It’s stupid. There are two colors of lug nuts (backside). Blue is 110 ft*lb and silver is 140ft*lb. My V is driven through winter and I had to look very close to figure out I had blue tint lug nuts.
Why not ceramic coat the wheels and then quick rinse them to remove dust ?
It doesn't work as well and I have hard water
@@TWAMotorsports I see, good point. In thought it sounded like a brilliant plan in my head haha. Hopefully you're seeing good results so far!
I am. Its great
that is a NICE! Caddy!!!
Thank you
I put a set of powerstop on my accord not and as big brake as yours however they were kicking out alot of dust.
I have never had that issue.
@@TWAMotorsports I worded that all wrong. My factory pads were kicking out hella dust. I just switched to powerstop after your vids. Hope that clears it up , my bad...
Yeah it will have next to zero dust now.
Thank you for your vids alway informative for diyer like me
Thank you. Glad I can help
what year is the cts-v what are the next mods for the cts-v
I don't own a ctsv
This is an ATS-V. Has the twin turbo V6. The CTSV has a supercharged V8.
That's right. I like both
So you don't have to remove the fill cap on the brake fluid when you compress the piston?
No. I never do
The caps are vented I believe.
They are not vented, they have a bladder in the cap to minimize the air contact with the fluid... you should not have to add fluid if you just compress the pistons into the calipers.
Correct
My ATSV vibrates alot at high speed braking.. Same thing with my current Powerstop and the oem brembos before that.. any idea on this?
Sounds like some runout or wheel imbalance, clean the rotor interface to the wheel bearing, also between the rotor face and wheel hub.
Probably pad material deposited unevenly on the rotor. Burnish the brakes to burn it off. Warped rotors, especially on rotors this huge, is actually kinda rare.
Ez already did that same thing..
GusMahn powerstops sell rotors aswell.. might try that
I thought your not suppose to back feed brake fluid that way. I was thought to crack the bleeder and then depress it. Was told you can cause damage to the master doing that way. But idk
I have never had an issue doing it this way
Gm service manual states that this is how you change pads. It keeps the brake system sealed, as you do not top off fluid. Once every 2 years the brake fluid is flushed.
Its not your granmas Cadillac. I really love that one
Lol. True
I broke a piston prying the caliper open like that.
Really. I have never had that issue
My brakes squeak a ton, they say it need to deglaze but done that and still squeaks
May need a different pad
@@TWAMotorsports they switch them out at dealer, before and then they told me to run it and do a hard brake to deglaze the rotors and did but still squeak.
Maybe non gm pad like I did here
@@TWAMotorsports I see yeah maybe, maybe next option, try it out this weekend. Thanks
You're welcome
Get her the rotors with the drill holes they look bad ass
I think I will if these wear out.
@@TWAMotorsports Bad advice. Drilled rotors crack. These OEM rotors are more than adequate for most enthusiasts.
The floating rotors can be expensive to replace, but DBRacing sells the Rings and you re-use the hats...
Brake dust may be gone but get ready for the squeaking in a little while.
So far so good. Never had that in the past with them
@@TWAMotorsports I have a set on my SS and they squeak like crazy when reversing. Could be a separate issue but it never happened with the OEM delcos installed. Hopefully you have better luck than I did.
That is a known issue on ss with stock sometimes too
Get the wife a cheaper old lady car if she drives it like that.
I did. She drives a Yukon now.
Since this are drill slatted rotors don't you have to replace them every time you change brake pads when they get low?
These are not drilled or slotted, they are just 2 piece floating rotors on front and regular 1 piece rotors on rear.
They are not drilled or slotted
I have a 2016 ats-v which aftermarket rotors would you recommend with brembo brakes
@@freibelbautista9449 I have never had an issue
@@TWAMotorsports ok but can you recommend any front rotors to buy for my car? Or you always go oem rotors
