An Amanar, Yurchenko 2.5, was worth less than a Cheng, round-off half layout 1.5, at the time Biles did that vault, and the Cheng was the most common vault at Tokyo vault finals. 4:04 this is false and a common misconception, FIG's been doing this every quad since the introduction of the open code for a variety of reasons. 4:58 that's not a good way to understand scoring at all, especially in the current Olympic quad where a score above 15 is MASSIVE and when vault scores tend to have a higher ceiling because of the relative ease of 9+ E scores compared to bars, beam and floor. 6:47 it's not rulebooks, it's the Code of Points, the rulebook dictates procedures, also the first skill is the Biles I, not the Biles. 6:59 that should say "The Biles I" or "The Biles" to be accurate for the time. Unfortunately, this showed a lack of care for basic aspects of the sport that you can learn by asking an informed fan or writer. If y'all wanna learn the sport, there are great resources. Sorry for the ramble.

When you are so good they just name several moves after you because no one else can do them. I don't think people realize what level that put her on. There are martial legends with one or two moves named after them. She has 5 or 6 to my knowledge.
In gymnastics, new moves are always named after the first athlete to do it in competition, it's not because nobody else could possibly do them, though that may be true for Simone!

This is bull**** . There is an evolving awareness in all sports - including diving - that extremely risky moves are now being penalized, not rewarded. Judges and athletes alike are very aware of what can literally kill you or turn you into a quadraplegic. That's the way it should be - just ask Elena Mukhina (when she was alive and doing the Thomas salco, that is) or that diver that died when he hit his head on the board because judges scored high on being as close as you could get to it. Both Biles and the narrator of this video should know all this.
uh its only an updated version of a Yurchenko style Vault which has been done in the 11 Olympic Cycles since 1984 when Ecaternia Szabo won gold with an average score of 9.94 Mary Lou Retton won silver with 9.93 and Lavinia Agache bronze with a 9.875 separated by about .7 in score where as the scores in Paris were separated by .834 Simone had 15.3 Andrade of Brazil had 14.966 and Jade Carey had 14.466 had Simone not stepped out of Bounds in one of her Tumbling passes on floor she would've won gold by roughly .2 over Andrade and would've been the first American Gymnast male of female to win 4 or more Gold medals in 2 Olympics and would have 12 total Olympic medals 2 gold and a Silver for team all around 2 individual all around gold 2 gold each on Vault and Floor and 2 Bronze on Balance Beam plus she's said she might try for the team in Los Angeles in 2028
Great video! Watching bars and balance beam they talked a lot about difficulty points coming off for various reasons, like if you fall that skill you were doing gets downgraded. To someone who doesn't really know gymnastics beyond casual watching but knows numbers fairly well it seems like with all of the Biles' they could have the high difficulty points they deserve but sharp known downgrades for doing them incorrectly that would deter people from attempting them when they aren't actually capable of doing them. You know, rather than try to make the thing seem closer to other skills in difficulty points, which generally would make people think it isn't that much more difficult and they should totally go for it.

It might not be possible because footage from the Olympics is usually pretty heavily copyrighted and expensive to get the rights to use. I can't remember a single rewinder based on an event in the Olympics. They were probably only able to do this one because it was just a qualifier so whoever televises gymnastics competitions in the US probably had the rights and not the Olympics themselves.

Early in the video, you say that the vault had a difficulty value of 4.60, later you say that a score is determined by the difficulty score plus the execution score (which is 10.0), then you end by saying she scored a 16.1. The math ain't mathing OR maybe the number being flashed isn't the difficulty score at the beginning. You guys got enough right about this to educate non-gymnastics people and enough wrong about it to infuriate the gymnastics community.
I watched gymnastics back in the 90s and early 2000s and figured we'd never see anyone better and more dominant than Shannon Miller. She was an unstoppable force throughout 1993-1994. And now we have Simone Biles, who's legit the GOAT.

That's not difficulty, it's the number of the vault. Each vault has a number, and all Yurchenko vaults start with 4

The math ain't mathing OR maybe the number being flashed isn't the difficulty score at the beginning. You guys got enough right about this to educate non-gymnastics people and enough wrong about it to infuriate the gymnastics community.
