How the Buccaneers fell apart after dominating the 2002 Super Bowl | Collapse

  • In 2002, Jon Gruden was hired away from the Oakland Raiders and became the new head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was hired to take the Bucs that extra mile, and he did. In his first season as head coach he beat his former team in Super Bowl XXXVII. It was the Buccaneers first Super Bowl in franchise history... and their last with Jon Gruden at the helm, but why?

    Nobody seems to remember Bill Parcells’ role in all of this. The Bucs fired Tony Dungy with the intent to hire Parcells as his replacement. However, the Big Tuna changed his mind at the last minute leaving Tampa Bay without a head coach. Facing embarrassment and significant public criticism, the Buccaneers were desperate to find a new head coach of higher or at least equal caliber to the one they had just fired. That’s why they were ultimately so willing to relinquish draft picks and whatever else they gave the Raiders in exchange for Gruden.

      I remember those last years of the NFC Central very well. For me the Bucs collapse boils down to two (or three) decisions. Correct me if i'm wrong. One was adding Keyshawn in the first place. His personality was too much for his overrated abilities as a receiver to compensate: players who could stretch the defense, like Marvin Harrison or Reggie Wayne, would have been better complements to McCardell. The other was getting rid of Lynch and Sapp, who still had productive years after TB and were still better than whoever replaced them

      The Bucs immediate downfall was from Jon Gruden having too much control. I remembered when Keenan McCardell was up for contract talks. Gruden stiffed the guy after Gruden allegedly promised McCardell that he would work things out with him next year. When a man like McCardell would refuse to talk to Gruden, one has to consider if any of us were in McCardell's shoes. Between men, a lie like that is the worse thing imaginable between men. I know it's business. But if someone says: "You have my word," or "I promise," we all hold each other accountable. That in my opinion was a snake move.

    That was Dungys' ring. Gruden got put into the 100% perfect situation. Like Seifert and Switzer. Those teams really didnt need a coach. Dungy got his revenge though😂😂

    • @rumble4114
      @rumble4114 Před 3 lety +4

      Dungy went 0-2 in the playoffs his last 2 years in Tampa, getting outscored 52-12, scoring 0 touchdowns. Gruden's first 2 playoff games in Tampa, he went 2-0 outscoring teams 58-16 and scoring 6 offensive touchdowns. They beat Philly by 17 instead of losing to them by 22. That's a 39 point swing. Explain plz.

      Left out how Dungy got blown out in the playoffs in Philadelphia his last two years and the best they could do is win 9 or 10 games with dungy

      Gruden won it his first year here. And so did Brady. Sometimes you're only a piece away from achieving your goal.

      To be honest I would do the same thing given how the league is today. If your offense can’t score your going to loose even if you have the 85 bears defense. Sometimes the best defense is a great offense.

    • @justingardner4658
      @justingardner4658 Před 4 lety

      Disagree , the better defense still wins 90% of the time. In a way I could agree with you if you said offensive line. I believe whichever team has the most dominating o line is a way to play defense by controlling the game. Just dropping back n throwing isn’t EVER gonna win a SB.

    • @LogueTheRogue
      @LogueTheRogue Před 4 lety

      @@justingardner4658 Bruh the 49ers just lost the SB to a drop back team! The 49ers had a way better defense and O-line and they couldn't beat a team that had a scat back as their RB. Do you even watch football?

    Watching these can be so sad tbh...a team can reach the highest peaks so quickly and then lose it all in the same amount of time. Hopefully the Brady-Gronk duo along with Coach Arians and the pro bowl receivers will provide some happy moments for Tampa in the 2020 season. The Bucs could definitely use them.
