Thank you, shaggy! Now I can play flight of the bumblebee on cello.
LOL Shaggy got you covered on that Act III from Le Conte du tsar Saltan! Yes, I will be teaching it
Now, learn a piece with more musicality! XD
@@ninjaaron wow throwing shade on bees like that?
Awesome, thanks so much. I am 33 years old and just started playing cello 4 months ago, also learning to read music for the first time. Your videos are very helpful, I look forward to more!
I wish you all the best in your musical journey. The cello can be such a reward, and frustration too. Just yesterday, I was playing my arrangent of Bizet's Carmen and for the first time in years, enjoyed playing it! Hope you too find joy with cello and in life.
I've been playing cello for five years but I often get confused trying to shift quickly, this was so helpful! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Jonathan your effort is much appreciated, I've watched your fingering tutorials again and again, it helps me a lot. You are amazing!!!
You're welcome, Rosalia!
As a basic connoisseur of music I find your lessons are really insightful. You really point out things I always needs to be told
I play violin, but nobody made sense, so I just watched yours.
Thank you, so helpful! Your entire channel is great for a beginner cellist such as myself.
Thank you so much!! I have recently started cello and couldn't find someone on CZcams that explained when to change to different positions.
I cannot tell you how helpful this was for me. Thank you!!!
You are welcome, JoAnn Lambert
Thx u so much my teacher just s not yelling at me any more because of you
Greetings from Brazil! Love this video . Thanks
This was so helpful!
I know that I am getting ahead of myself but this is a great instructional video.
Hi Jonathan, there is any book where I can find this 2 Types of positions in 2nd and 3rd positions?
wow tysm!!! you really helped me understand the different positions on the cello!!

Thanks! Now I can play Humoresque!😀😃😄😁😆🥰😇😇😇you are an angle!
OK!
Is there a video that explains your tape marks? I would like to mark my positions as well.
Very helpful
Dear Jonathan, this is very useful. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
My pleasure, Federico. Would you please consider subscribing?
Jonathan Humphries thanks for reply, already subscribed! ;)
Dear Jonathan, I would like to buy one of Your books to improve my skills of fingering and combining positions. Please recommend me which one would be the best.
Excellent video.
Glad you liked it!
Hi Jonathan! I’m dying to know, WHEN do you decide to switch positions on cello. I’m confused as to how decide which position to play in when reading sheet music. HELP!!!
Can you do a video on how to hold your fingers on a note on for e.g. G string when you are playing a note on D string? To be more specific, how to hold your 1st finger on a E note when you need to use your 4th finger to play a C note?? Many thanks!!!
Pointed observation, Angela. You are clearly serious about your learning. This will be added to the upcoming video on "Thumb Placement in 1st Position" and "Why Cellists play Before, During and After the Note"
Jonathan Humphries Thanks a lot!!! I love that you are so clear in your videos!! Love all of them! Really appreciate it.
Hi Jonathan! Thank you very much for your awesome videos! I'm just starting the cello for 1 week and I was wondering where do you get your sheets with finger positions? Are you editing them with some soft? Thank you!
It depends on which sheets you are referring to.
@@CelloCoach I mean generally. I have discovered the amazing free software LilyPond these days! Are you using it?
Aftee i learned 1st postition, i learned 4th position. Now I'm learning 2nd position from this video, because I think there was a bit of miscommunication between me and my teacher. I think he assumed he had already taught me 2nd position and gave me a piece with 2nd position xD
What happens when there’s no indication that you have to play in different positions? Do I just play in first position?
There is never any indication for a different position. Your knowledge base and personal competence will define the position you play in, among other things.
Bonjour Jonathan
I am about to buy & learn Cello
I have found you today & love what I see & hear.. which beginner not expensive Cello would you suggest? Gracie Jonathan
Anything with ebony pegs and fingerboard.
Jonathan, a question just ocurred me: what app do you use for this captions with the sheet? Maybe I can use the same to make harshly, terribly critical political analysis videos.
I sue an iPad and Quicktime
So tell me about the tiny bow..... haha I've never seen anything like it! Does it go with a baby cello, or is it a tool to help with bow management? I'm intrigued!
It's just a small bow, no tiny cello that I recount. Then again, the little elf I stole it from wasn't too happy about it so we may never know the truth ;-)
"Little monster," hahah. Fun!
Glad you had a giggle
Very nice explanations. What does one do when there are no numbers for hints? I'm not a beginner but never learned the lower positions.
Good question, one I will answer in the next Q&A. The short answer: most music can be played in places relative to the 1st position. Different positions grants us ease of play. I will expound on this later. Good question!
Can't wait :)
Great explanation. I only know first position, and am working on upper second. Do you suggest learning one position at a time or learning all of them at the same time?
one at a time
When you're looking for cello sheet music, they don't write the fingerings or the brakets indicating position shift. How do you play those pieces? Do you just know with practice? It's kinda overwhelming for me as a beginner 🙈
You have a good teacher who helps you think like a cellist. Consider online lessons with me
If a piece doesn't give you fingerings how do you know if you should shift or not?
This is a question I am working on answering in a video. Great asking!
Thanks so much. I am just learning at 73 years old and just began shifting and this really helps. What do you use for your digital music? I do want to get rid of the Suzuki fingering and my pencil marks are getting pretty sloppy.
I wonder though, why finger in the 1st is actually UNDER the tape while in next positions is clearly on the tape? Is there's a reason for that? Going on half-position makes you put your 2nd finger ON the tape so maybe why? 🤔 Is there a reason why not put on the tape where the actual sound in 1st position is? Anyone? My daughter is learning in music school and feel so lost... 😅
what do you mean by "under"? Like closer to the bridge? That could be a misplacement of the tape in accordance to the string. the further from the bridge a note is, the wider the length of steps are on the fingerboard. Hence, slight alignments are more noticed in the 1/2 position
I understand that but how to do you read that on paper did it say it I dont understand how to read that on paper I can read first position ofc but beyond down the string I dont understand
Secure a solid understanding of the 1st position and the associated numbers with each note. When ready, try Upper 2nd.
May l know what is and where is half position? Thx a lot
Think already found it ;-)
I see that you put tape on the the fingerboard....is it something you recommend to all your students?
🙏❤️🙏
;-)
J.adore vos vidéos mais je n’arrive pas à tout comprendre. Pourriez vous activer les sous titres en français. MERCI d’avance
tu peut metre une transduction automatique
My fingers are short😢 it's hard to position them. Help
As are mine, are you using a 4/4? If so, consider a 7/8 cello
Dommage que je ne comprenne pas entièrement la langue anglaise ! Sinon, je comprends que c'est pédagogique ! Merci.
De rien Andreé. En tout cas, si tu as des questions ou veut pendre leçons en ligne, je peut t'expliques en français.
For beginners it's hard to understand that.
But thank u anyway
Maybe this will help - czcams.com/video/HDaFPzaxzPo/video.html
I still can’t read it thook
I still don't quite understand
Care to expand on your confusion?
@@CelloCoach I dont understand how to read anything beyond 4th position in getting better at reading it bc of the songs I'm playing but
Thanks, I hate it (the nonsensical names of the positions)
