  • I hope today's tutorial helps! I know that a lot of beginner cellists struggle with understanding how finger placement works. In this tutorial, I don't talk about anything outside of first position. Fortunately, most beginner cello pieces stay within this position, so you shouldn't have any problems. :) Let me know if you have any further questions!

When I started with the Cello about a year ago, I didn't really hear the difference between slightly too flat, slightly too sharp or right on the note. I did hear it in comparison with another note, so I started by playing an open string and then putting down finger 1. Slightly off the right spot was easier for me to hear, that way.
In time, my hearing became better again, and it became easier to distinguish between slightly off and right on the spot, so I no longer need to play the open string now.

I really appreciate watching your videos because they give me an idea of what might lie ahead.

Also I have a fifth line which is very useful (especially with high melodies on the A string, which can even go beyond it a little). This plays the same note as the next open string. When alternating two adjacent notes quickly and one is an open string it is easier to just play it on one string instead of two. And it is a quick way to check all of your strings are in tune with each other.

I know it's very late to answer but it could be useful for other people. My cello teacher made me buy a 4/4 cello instead of a 3/4 which would have been better for my little hands. The first months of practice I had a champagne cork between my forefinger and middle finger to stretch them. And it did work! It's uncomfortable at first but it helps a great lot when learning how to position the left hand on the instrument.

Solfege (do, re, mi, etc...) is all about what key you are in, unless you are using "fixed do". If you are using fixed do, C is do, D is re, E is mi, and so on.

Enharmonics work in equal-temperamental tuning, but not in well-temperamental tuning. I think I have that right.

I've heard the recommendation that beginners should not not use tape to help them learn, because it hinders the progress long term when you get used to using your eyes instead of ears and hand coordination. What is your opinion to using aid tape vs not using it, despite the learning threshold becoming a bit higher? I'm not using tape, but its a bit frustrating not having a visual reference point. I do come from guitar, so I'm used to being able to "cheat" with visual aid.

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  Před 6 lety

+Wanessie I think using tape is just fine. :) I used it when I was learning, and it helped to develop my ear. Once my ear was more trustworthy, I took off the tapes. Past that point, the journey of refining your intonation goes on for the rest of your life.

    Hey Sarah!
I‘m 15 years old and I registered at a music school to learn the Cello. I come from a musical family ( Dad plays Bass and Guitar, Mom plays Piano) and I play the piano too, but I cant read notes. Im scared that I’m too old to learn the Cello. All the musicians i know, started to learn they‘re instruments as a young child.
Do you think im too old to be a good musician in the future? Lots of Love from Germany!
Sorry for my bad english :)

      Hallo!
No, you’re not too old!! You may have to work a lot harder than students who started younger, and perhaps some career options might not be realistic, but go for it if you think can be disciplined. I’ve found that sometimes the most passionate performers are the ones who started at an older age. They don’t take music for granted and they’ve had to really work for it. It means more to them and that comes across to the audience.
Your English is great! Ich spreche Deutsch ein bisschen. Meine Aussprache und Grammatik sind furchtbar. 😬

Hi from North Germany. I just started learning and am twice your age. Go for it, but most of all enjoy the music/sounds you make :)

Thank you a lot for your supporting words, Sarah! That means a lot to me ☺️ I talked to my mum about what you wrote. She thinks it’s true, When musicians, who started in an older age had to work harder and they didn’t take music for granted and do it with all their heart are sometimes more passionate.
My mum played the piano because her parents wanted her to do it and she just started to like the instrument when she was playing a while. My mum said that I’m more passionate by playing the piano than her, because it was my decision to do it. And now it was my decision to learn the cello and playing piano because i love it and it’s somehow in my blood. But I don’t know why I didn’t had the wish to play those instruments when I was younger.
      Have a great day!
Dein Deutsch ist wirklich gut 😊

Well, the cello has a deeper tone and is a much larger instrument. But there are quite a few similarities in playing technique.
