They were called Easy Company because they were Company E of their Battalion. A company has anywhere from a few dozen to 200 soldiers. It’s a tactical-sized unit that can perform a battlefield function on its own. A company consists of three or four platoons (a platoon being approximately 36 soldiers, commanded by a lieutenant), and is generally commanded by a captain. It can also go by different names, depending on the function: Company-sized artillery units are called batteries, while in armor and air cavalry units, they are called troops. During WWII, the military alphabet used somewhat different words for each letter; Easy was used for the letter E. In the 1950s the military alphabet was adjusted to become more uniform, since it was to be used by all NATO forces, and the American and British militaries before that had utilized different words for each letter. Sometimes it matched, sometimes it didn’t, and this caused confusion in communication in the postwar period, so they updated it. Today, we still use this updated military alphabet across all types of communications. Today, Easy Company would be called Echo Company.

Just remember that this is a true story, it’s not made up. They got some small details messed up but for the most part, what you see is what actually happened. This is not based on a true story, this is a true story! Much love to you guys! You complement each other very well. Keep smashing it! Blessings and love from Wales, UK.

The captions at the end of the episode were a real letter handed out to Allied Forces on the eve of the European invasion (D-Day). The Airborn divisions were sent in ahead of the landing craft with ground troops. It was the Airborn's job to take out targets behind the beaches, weakening the enemies and cutting off reinforcements while working their way back to the beachhead. Given how new paratroopers were in the concept of warfare things did not go entirely to plan, but from the start, the mission was to be dropped behind enemy lines and be surrounded by the enemy. They knew that would be the outcome no matter what.

The spaghetti thing had a purpose. They're going to be dropped behind enemy lines on their own until ground forces can get to them. They have to eat whatever food they can when they can and could have to fight right after. The weird part was Sobel looking peeved when they started to sing. They're gelling as a unit, that's exactly what he should want.

Having served for 20 years in the Military I will tell you that the Spaghetti was yes a test, but an evil one directed at Winters by Sobel because he was promoted on the same day. have you ever ran long distance on a full stomach? Its not recomended as the cramps will be very bad on that run as well making most people sick as seen in the show. Another thing on that run they sang as a FU to Sobel by the group for what they were going through and Sobel was pissed he did not get what he wanted. For sure most people watching the show may not understand what Sobel represents and most have a hard time moving past the actors Friends Character from the past. As a molder of Troops many understand that he has to be the apparent bad guy to get the troops to bond together as a unit, as we see from easy company he did his job well.

There are a few modern vets who have made videos about running up Currahee since Camp Toccoa. It was a 12 mile RUN, not march, almost straight uphill.
Easy Company was a group of ABSOLUTELY different kind of men. Sobel was an asshole but he created one of the most effective company’s of soldiers the world has ever seen.

  • @janak132
    @janak132 Před rokem +1

It is my impression that the way Cpt. Sobel is portrayed in the series he was afraid of jumping and afraid of combat and that's why he worked his men harder than anyone else did. He wanted his men to be so good that he at least had a chance at surviving himself. Unfortunately his nervous personality led him to make several leadership mistakes as well as taking out his insecurities on the men under his command.

Those planes were the legendary C47 transport planes. First introduced over 80 years ago, they were so successful that hundreds are still flying. The civilian passenger version was the DC3. Very sturdy and reliable, because they had the capability of landing and taking off on dirt runways, they are still an industry standard in undeveloped air strips. Remarkably, the shots of the planes taking off were of real, serviceable aircraft, not CGI.

The messed up part about that extra paratrooper pay, is IIRC glider infantry were still just "Infantry" and not "Paratroopers".
So even though they got towed in with the Airborne, had to run the gauntlet of AAA with the Airborne, had to crash land and fight cutoff behind enemy lines with the Airborne, etc, because they didn't physically use a parachute they didn't get the extra pay.
They were taking 90% of the same risk, but without any of the benefits paras got.

"it's about to get real real"... You have no idea. You saw Saving Private Ryan so you're prepared for the next episode... I think in many ways this is harder because they start each episode with the real survivors. I read that of E-company only like 40% of the initial men survived to the end of the war... And that's actually a good number, there were some army companies that only had like 3 survivors out of 100+ in the original company (not counting reinforcements). At the start of episode 2 you'll hear the one guys voice crack over his lost comrades, probably 50 years later it still was emotional for him.

Oh, and there's no discipline for messing up on a training exercise. We do an AAR. An After Action Review. It's a debriefing of what we did right, and what we did wrong. 3 of each. Someone always says "good crosstalk" as a positive. Running army joke. You get to the negatives and that's when the ballsy guy suggests that maybe someone they don't name probably made a mistake and we should have maybe done this instead. So the punishment nowadays is just public humiliation in a room full of all your people where a moderator is asking questions and your commander is not in command until class is dismissed. That's also why that gentleman had a white band on his helmet when he graded the death count. Those are OCs. Observer/Controller. They grade performance in the highest levels of training.
(More editing: Off by a full grid. They're talking about grid squares. That's 1 kilometer by 1 kilometer. So he is at minimum a kilometer out of place)

Clearing up some stuff. The blonde dude, Buck Compton, didn't replace Captain Sobel, he took the spot of the Lieutenant that took Sobel's spot. Also, Bill wasn't supposed to see that letter, but he did due to accidentally wearing the wrong jacket. Also, from what I know, Sobel didn't try to push responsibility for his failures onto Winters with the court martial. He was just a very harsh disciplinarian, which is why he was the CO of Easy while there were being stood up (first formed). Winters just so happened to make a judgement call that didn't exactly please Sobel, and Sobel felt he needed to set an example. He gets a lot of bad rap in the show due to his harshness.

The reason for this bad rap being that a lot of the first-hand accounts used to form the depiction of the man in the show were from interviews with men who had grown to dislike if not outright hate the man. Partly due to his harshness, but as Nixon implied, he wasn't the best tactician and it almost looked like he would have lead them into Normandy and gotten them killed if not for the NCOs all but mutinying, and submitting notes that basically said they would actually mutiny if Sobel lead them into combat.

And Winters wasn't the one who was leading the exercise where the company lost. Sobel lead the company out of position, and then in an attempt to fix this error, lead them to get "killed", for the purposes of the exercise. Winters, as proven later in the series, was an excellent tactician, and a master of ambushes. Which is why he said "We are in textbook ambush position."

My great uncle (RIP) flew a P-47 in Europe and my grandpa (also RIP) was an infantryman over there. This was one of my favorite series when I watched it, The Pacific is also really good and is based on the war on the Asian side (no offense Asia :D) vs the Japanese
