  • Another signal display update at the Exit 0 ramp and Joseph Howe Drive in Halifax, NS.
The right turn signals have finally been switched to display protected only rather than a shared thru/right. The right turn signals are now overlaps instead of being on with phase 4 so they’re more versatile.
The Joseph Howe Dr crosswalk is no longer rest in walk and must be recalled prior to the signals turning green, which means the right turn signals can be displayed with the thru signals. The opposing direction now has a leading left turn rather than a lagging so the right turn arrow can transition into the ramp phase.
If there is a ped call, the right turn signal will remain red until the ped clearance interval finishes.
The last things I’d do here, would be to separate the opposing thru/left signals into separate displays, add left turn arrows on the ramp signals, add bicycle signals at each crossing and reinstate the no right on red signs.

100% agree with everything you said! I really don’t like that shared signal arrangement for the protected-only left.
4:58 Yeah, the off-ramp signals really should have left arrows, instead of just the green ball. But that’s the least important thing to fix! 😂

I've never seen a sign like that before in Canada, haha! Super cool!

Problem is, the LEFT ON GREEN ARROW ONLY sign is in English only. So if they're a French-speaking driver, they won't know they're not supposed to turn left without the green arrow (ils ne sauront pas qu'ils ne peuvent pas faire la virage à gauche sans la flèche verte). They need the red arrow (la flèche rouge) here.

You have to put all of this in a miniature form with hot wheels on a toy road map for me to understand everything lol

I suggest turning lights shall use the red, yellow and green arrows, rather than red ball, yellow ball/arrow, green arrow. and never flash the green arrow for 3-light protective turning phase.

That is what we would do in the United States. We would use the red arrow for both left and right turns, and flashing green is not allowed in the US. In a pinch, the Australian 6-section signal could be a possibility, with 3 vertical sections and with the circular and arrow indications for each color side-by-side, with red on the top, yellow in the middle, and green on the bottom. Regardless of what they do, they would need to determine whether the existing mast arms can hold the weight of the new signals, and replace them if necessary.

@@TheTrafficTech And Bedford Basin bound J Howe Drive left turn signal and thru signal should also be separated. Since some drivers (including me) may misinterpret the four head traffic lights as a permissive left turn with protective phases.

@@user-rj4xo6vj7x I absolutely agree. I’ve seen setups using the red arrow but we don’t use that in Nova Scotia yet. There’s no reason why this can’t be separated into a dedicated thru and left display.
