I was let go from the aerospace industry at 59. Was unemployed for a while. Took a lot of useless training at Workforce then one day realized I was in denial about being retired. I've been teaching STEM part-time at a Community College for 4 1/2 years now and I'm 68. It's good walking around money and I enjoy it, but would never consider making a living teaching K-12 as a profession. My students are motivated and many of them are older as well. Part of the reason I can do this is we paid off all our debts by our early 50's and stuffed our 401k's to the gills and drove 20 year-old cars through our working lives.

Teaching k-12? My wife decided she would do that and after three months realized it was a terrible choice. Kids don't listen, are out of control, teachers are punished for trying to get kids to work on their studies, the internal politics is worse than anywhere else, it's a you stab my back I stab yours type of workplace, kids break the windows out of your car, etc. My uncle did the same and put his seven years in and couldn't wait to get out. Afterward when asked if he'd do that again he said he'd rather cut his nose off with a butter knife.

Before I published this video I spoke to a friend of mine who teaches in a Cleveland suburb and she enjoys teaching at her school. • @Grimenoughtomaketherobotcry

Everyone thinks they can teach because, "Hey! I went to school! I know all about it!". They find out otherwise very quickly.
Many "skills" can be learned, but people considering teaching need to understand that it's not about how "good" you are; it's about how good you are at bringing out the good in others, and doing so consistently under what can frequently be quite impossible conditions. If the voice inside you tells you after your first couple of practice teaching assignments that you don't have the temperament for it, you probably don't have the temperament for it. Spare yourself and a whole lot of other people much grief and draw the proper conclusions. If you do have the temperament, then, in the words of Chief Dan George's character Lone Watie in, "The Outlaw Josey Wales": "Endeavour to persevere!".

Non profits are a bit of a risk, because if your going for a job with them I assume that you already can't get a job. Therefore you have a unemployment gap! If this is an issue you wont get paid work so your next alternative is volunteer work. Volunteer work is only for people who can afford to give back to the community and don't expect paid employment. Besides that if you were to go for one of the positions within a non profit and your last job was voluntary than your application will be competing with others who have paid work on their resumes. Another issue with non profits is funding, so even if you are best employee that they ever had they can't give you the job because of a) funding and b) EE0.

Note about real estate - an agent is an independent contractor. You need money to get in. You have to have a broker and there is usually a monthly payment. You pay insurance and your own advertising. You have to take courses to keep your license. If you’re short of money, and need to earn right now, real estate won’d do that for you.one of my commission checks was literally $10 because I owed for advertising.

The 'second careers' in my top 10 list were added only after I did research which included looking at local and national statistics/trends. Whenever possible I also speak to people currently working in the industry or I have second hand familiarity with people who earn their living doing this work. In this video I didn't grind down on the fees/requirements for entering this second career because those vary by state. I also want to mention that I am personally familiar with this particular career because I have friends and a family member who are successful Realtors. I also know or am familiar with people who took their career as a Realtor and leveraged it to launch other successful second or third businesses. (Check out Graham Stephan on CZcams).

Evaluate carefully before investing in a business, additional education or getting into a lower pay industry. Depending on the income generated it will affect your retirement - you're talking 10-20 additional years of earnings. Lower earnings will lower your Social Security benefits, while the investment in additional education may leave you paying a loan, Both of which will affect your ability to save. The business may or may not be a good investment. Recommend you thoroughly evaluate the up front costs along with the continuing cost to maintain the brand name, the mentoring you'll receive, the profitability of the current business (if buying an established location) and the overall condition of the parent company before purchasing.

Hi Carol! You are not a nobody. You have a lot of work and life experience. Plus, you are only 60. Believe it or not, you are in your prime. It sounds like you only need some direction, focus, and a some new skills to move in a career and life direction you’ll enjoy. I love the fact that you would like to start your own business.
This story might help: Years ago I worked in a phone room making hundreds of calls a day selling magazines to homemakers. I considered it a horrible job. One day I told my coworker, who knew I was only working there till I got my new business of the ground, how much I hated that job. He looked straight into my eyes, and softly said: “It’s a means to an end, Lou”. I never forgot those words. To this day I know if I had to dig ditches it would be okay as long as it’s ‘a means to an end’. The point is do what ever you have to do while you are trying to do what you really want to do. Now, to learn about starting and scaling a small business consider subscribing to my Side Hustle Rules CZcams channel and consider Subscribing to my Side Hustle Rules Pro page on Patreon. It’s only a few dollars a month. Check them out to see if they are for you. You are also welcome to email me at lou@sidehustlerules.com if you have any questions. Good luck.

The course is only 8 weeks long and when I'm done I'm certified. Besides decent pay traveling CNAs also get a really huge stipend which is tax-free. Some of them are bringing home $1,800 a week. You are sent to all 50 states and they are paying extra to go to Hawaii right now. Assignments are usually 13 weeks long and between assignments you can take off as much time as you want. I figure if I do two assignments in a row then I could save $20,000 in 6 months and then take a few months off and travel like crazy.

Be careful throwing out the word teaching so casually. It is brutal. The kids are animals. Endless parades of administrators and coaches showing up unannounced. Between morning/afternoon hall duty and afterschool meetings, you're looking at 11 hour days, then how ever many hours it takes you to prepare material in time to do the whole thing over again at 6 the next morning. If you don't work nights to lesson plans, you work all weekend. Being a first time teacher is VERY difficult, especially if you don't have training in classroom management/discipline. If you're out there considering it, think twice!
