You are close, Kherson takes it's name from a greek "Χερσόνησος", which means "Peninsula". Many Ukrainian cities still bear ancient Greek names, Melitopol, Sevastopol, Mariupol (Literally Mare o Polis, a city by the sea), and Odessa comes from Odessos. These names are often leftovers from russian empire, empress Catherine loved giving Greek names to cities, so these are quite recent, from 17 hundreds. She did it to undermine the influence of ottoman empire in the Black Sea, it's called "Greek Plan"

In a battle like the first of the series I’d say to build a defensive position in the trees as they give in game bonuses to your troops defense and they block arrows, hide your cav and generals somewhere away from your main force and when they run out of arrows and charge, you should wait for them to get stuck in and charge your cav going trying to pin as many of their cav to your infantry as possible, then send attack orders to your infantry and voila, it doesn’t work in open battles aswell but if you get trees it’s pretty much a instant win Strat, I play way to much ancient empires for Attila as the Macedonians using pike focused armies, horse archers are the bane of my existence.

gotta love the bosphorans cant wait to see your main army setup lategame(dont forget your elite archers also come with a spear so if they get charged they become light spearmen)! btw please conquer the map i was actually always looking for a cimmerian campaign its 1 of those factions that nobody conquers the map with.

facing nomad factions without matching their armies will always be a pain and significant losses. gotta match with spears a shit ton of archers and alot of melee cav but even with that the micromanaging is tedious. i personally always go nomad and a easy way to get them is dragging their horse archers into a trap by engaging then basically feigning retreats and use melee cav to encircle and take them out cause their shock cav will be easy pickings without horse archer support

I was hoping you would do a Iberian campaign so I'm happy to hear you want to do one. Just had a long going war with Cimmeria in my current Egypt campaign where they caused more of a problem then I expected

horse archers specifically from the steppe dominated the world militarily across the globe until guns and royal scythia owned the western steppe(european part of the steppe) for a large duration of the period rome 2 was in so they are pretty realistically that good
