Itâs a fine line between Cloud Engineer & Dev Ops engineer. I searched every stone for Cloud Engineer. I realized a Cloud engineer must be very familiar with the DevOPS tools. However know one never says it. The Cloud Engineer should have the following skills .
1. Linux
2. Networking
3. Programming Bash\Python
4. Iac - Terraform etcâŠ.
5. Micro services Docker\Kubernetes
6. Documentation skills
7. CI/CD
8. Chose a provider and then learn multi Cloud. You might end up supporting different cloud providers end the future however the application and technology is still the same.
I would have to say its the opposite in most cases. Cloud Engineer would be level 1. DevOps engineer would be level 2. Cloud engineers don't all need to understand CI/CD, Microservices, and IaC. They are more likely to be required to know linux, networking concepts, and scripting (bash or python).
The titles are a mess. One companies "Cloud Engineer", will be another companies "DevOps engineer", which will be another companies "Software Engineer - Infrastructure", which will be another companies "Platform Engineer", which will be another companies "Site Reliability Engineer". Look at the job descriptions and just see if it's something you want to do.. that's my biggest advice for you
Hey, Nick! Thank you much for this! It really helped to give me some reassurance, as well as a much needed confidence boost. I'm a seasoned IT pro but, primarily private, on-premises infrastructure. I'm in the process of trying to take my knowledge and experience and transition into a cloud-based role. Spent the last several months obtaining related certs to help. Fortunately, I have most of the items on your checklist already under my belt. The parts holding me back, IMO, are, 1.) my lack of basic scripting/coding experience, and 2.) lack of hands-on. However, working on fixing that now -- taking a Python class and doing The Cloud Resume Challenge. Hopefully, once completed, and w/ some luck, I'll be on my way! [fingers crossed] Thanks, again! I greatly appreciate it!

Thank You so. much Nick. I have a degree in ICT but ended up working in Media, Fashion & textiles department on the creative side of it, now that I dont see any scope in what I do, I have decided to go back to IT and Cloud Computing. Since, i Have lost the touch, it seems i'll have to do a lot when it comes to learning the basics in order to get up the speed. This video was a very good to boost my confidence in doing so, although it will be a bit difficult for me to gain the 100% confidence in being able to learn. thank you once again.

I am an exp soft. Eng. who want to switch career to the pure cloud engineer (no devops) and already done some cloud certification . Because for cloud engineer somewhere you need system administrator exp.
So please guide me over this ? It would be really helpful đ.
You don't always need to kno systems go get into cloud engineering. A lot of cloud engineering is software defined and can be built using code. I would focus some of your attention on the infrastructue but you could be really successful if you learned Lambda or Functions.

Working on python now then I was gonna start with some azure Certs I was wondering if I should take a few security Certs before I do the cloud Certs
Hey Todd, thanks for the comment. Security and Cloud are isolated tracks so while one may help you obtain the others you will have much to learn from going either paths as a first choice. If your goal is to become a cloud engineer and you'd like to focus on networking and architecture, than stay the course with your cloud certifications because you have a really good foundation. I'm just asking i wast start learn ccna 200-301 and i' was search about how to be a cloud engineer "entry level" some videos told me learn this (ccna -> vmware vcp-nv ->chooce one of thees compTIA cloud+ or cloud fundamentals ->next ->AWS certified SysOps or AWS certified solutions ) after all of this they told me you can go to AZURE later "if the market wants me learn AZURE" , after i see your video its look different way about what you say so i don't know what is the right direction , But i think they talk about certifications , I'm from EGYPT btw i know its far away :D but i need little help to start a real job and start my life i''m Dump.

Hi, how are you ? Iâm honestly so confused on where to start my journey with everyone telling me so many different things . My first plan was gonna be ccna the vmware to get a good grasp on networking and virtualization but now Iâm not sure if itâs to overkill and I should just go net+ , Linux + then learn python with the google automation with python course . But I guess for me Iâm wondering what other jobs would be a good prerequisite before the cloud than a systems admin? Just so I know what all I can apply for before trying to get hired in the cloud . So would those 3 certs give me a good grasp to maybe get a mid level job then take the aws cloud practitioner and Microsoft azure admin?
It all depends on what you want to do with your interests. There is no set path. Follow your curiosities!

I'm studying for my AWS cloud practitioner cert currently and I was looking for entry-level jobs that could help me get my foot in the door while I continue to learn more. most of the jobs I'm seeing are saying they are "entry-level" but the requirements are nowhere near. I wanted to know if you had any suggestions on job roles or just advice in general.

Thats an excellent question and honestly a common problem in this industry as HR and recruiters typically make up these job descriptions but as you know, they have little understanding of relevant details because they don't work in the technical space at all.
I would advise you to look around for things like 'cloud support engineer' or 'QA engineer' where the description mentions you'll be working in a cloud environment. This way you can grow in your experience and be able to market yourself as having such experience on your resume and Linkedin.

I would continue your studies in networking and pursue certifications. This will help build your confidence in cloud networking.

I am considering Cloud roles after having been an IT Sys Admin for 11 years in the US, but I would also like to pursue a career that I can take with me. Given that I would be working with company data and other regulatory issues as Cloud Engineer, as a US citizen am I stuck with jobs in the US as a Cloud Engineer?
You may find less opportunities native to countries abroad because their technology may not be as advanced... But you could always try working a US job remote.

Go for a degree at WGU and pursue the Cybersecurity or Cloud Engineering BS track. You'll get your degree and certifications all at once. You should also pick up a part time job in the process so you can gain experience!

Yeah the Bachelors in Cloud program at WGU is a good program to get into for this career path. I'm not sure about a masters program in cloud at WGU but maybe there is another program out there.
Hey Nick this was a really informative video. I did have a few questions as someone who is not in IT but is looking to make a career change into a entry level cloud position. Do I need to get the A+ and start off in a help desk position before trying to study for a cloud position? Or can I get an entry level cloud position with the network+, Server+, Linux+ certs and basic Bash skills? Or would I need a bachelor's to start off in the field? Any thoughts or info would be much appreciated. Thank you.
You do not have to go through the helpdesk but it may take a bit more time and effort on your part to go straight into the cloud. The biggest issue for newcomers in the cloud is that you need to have the underlying information and need to prove that in your interviews. Getting the Network+, Security+, and Linux+ would help with a lot of that underlying info you'll need. Then I'd begin working on your cloud certifications and gaining opportunities through internships, personal projects, and part time gigs.

I would get an associate level certification and begin building your applications using only cloud services... especially serverless. Do that and you'll have some interest in your future job applications!

Is python the only programming language one needs to know. I have been a mobile developer for the past 2 years. I already extensive knowledge on kotlin and Java. Unfortunately, there arent many mobile jobs in my area and someone advised me to research about cloud computing.. i have so many questions and am completely green about this field. But it seems interesting enough to take it as a career
Python is very robust but I don't believe everyone needs to know it to be successful in cybersecurity or cloud engineering.
1st minute of this video was on point! I'm going after my AWS SAA cert no degree, teaching myself Networking, Python and Linux and hoping after getting certified I can get an entry level job somewhere. Just want to get my foot in the door for experience not even wanting a high salary just experience really.

Great info and thanks for sharing. I have an internal interview tomorrow for a associate cloud engineer. I've only just started my studies for aws cloud certification. I have the the years of working in a live broadcasting in environment, engineering skills to investigate issue, IT skills, mindset, ability to ask questions and the thirst for knowledge, but not the cloud skills.
