One time I was holding a puppy and opened my mouth wide. I was just playing with her, but she saw my open mouth and yawned. I did it again, this time intentionally, and she yawned a second time. Then she, I kid you not, CURLED UP AND FELL ASLEEP WITHIN SECONDS.

I feel like empathy levels are a lot harder to measure than with a "yawn test" video. I had zero urge to yawn but I definitely relate to other's pain and sorrows and tear up watching movies or reading novels and such regularly.

I think it depends on certain moods whether this affects me or not. If I'm in a better mood or not. If I'm mad I don't feel like yawning because I don't really want to be around people and I feel annoyed by them. But if I'm in a good mood I'm more liable to yawn because I naturally feel more empathic and engaged at that moment. I think this would probably vary multiple times throughout the day even.
I think it's more of a power of suggestion thing than an empathy thing.

Empathy is not a conscious effort to read emotions. It's an subconscious process where you see body language and literally feel the related feeling, tiredness, pain, etc. So if you are empathetic, people should stop feeling pain or tiredness or bad things because it's affecting you ffs damn those selfish guys. I had to laugh because as I opened up this message I yawned loudly!! I listen to a hypnosis app on my tablet every night. As soon as the hypnotist says " hi, this is Nick Wright" I yawn over and over again! I haven't yet managed to hear the end of the hypnosis either! I can recommend it!

Made me aware of how severely tired I am, but refused to yawn because of being primed to know this was a mind trick. I'm a very empathetic person - to the point it can be a hinderance, but I'm also strong willed.
Among all the meds they’ve given me in an attempt to control my migraines, most have been SSRIs. None have helped, but they all had negative side effects. With one in particular, I noticed that I was no longer feeling the need to yawn when other people yawned. I knew that was messed up and tapered off that med as soon as my doc gave the go-ahead. 😮
It's weird for me I guess. I consider myself pretty good at reading emotions, but yawns aren't contagious to me.

You can train it, evan to express your self easier. Sadly dear is not a lot of material floating around specifically garnered to people with a lot of empathy. But it will help you a good bit to navigate the world and your emotions better.
same, i tend to cry when i’m trying to help other people overcome mental health conditions such as depression, or just any other negative thing that has been affecting their life such as the passing of a family member. hearing their story just breaks my heart. plus it kinda makes it less awkward crying together rather than someone just crying alone

Thank you! I have autism and it annoys me that we're often seen as lacking empathy because we don't mimic or mirror emotions they way we're "supposed to" but I can relate to and understand an experience someone describes, even if I've never experienced something that I could use for a reference.

@Kurtis Gilmore both things happen with me on different occasions, and they probably both happen to you guys as well. we do have a hard time reading expressions or paying attention to them (the level varying from one autistic to the other) but we can also happen to read but not agree/relate/feel close to the person or understand why they're feeling something so deeply to empathize with them. but autistics also tend be hyperempathic, meaning that when we DO empathize, we are way deeper in it than other people. more compassionate, understanding and merciful, we could say, specially with animals and children.
