Thanks to Peter, we have a .45 Winchester Magnum Wildey Survivor to do some video with. I figured the best way to start would be to take it to a Backup Gun match, right? Unfortunately, I had continuous feeding problems despite having (I thought) gotten the gas system properly dialed in. Despite that, the match was still a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to doing more with this behemoth of a hand cannon. Enjoy!

They are actually decent guns when you have the gas system properly dialed in.
I thought backup meant 'kept in reserve in case the main gun fails'. Turns out it means 'back up a little, you guys, I'll be right back to the shootout once I clear this.'
If your backup gun is a .45 WinMag, what's the main gun ? Does it come on tracks ?

This is a really good gun to practice malfunction drills with.
I was thinking the same thing. I couldnt tell if it was user error or just one of the downsides of that firearm.

jjohnston94 Well he takes too long explaining the historical and engineering significance of the gun that bond can escape using a cleverly hidden knife from the rectal cavity.
The explaining of the gun is so bond isn't paying attention to him clearing the jam

This is a backup gun match, chances are that everyone else is running a revolver or Derringer or other gun that needs to be reloaded one round at a time. And yes, he's probably more skilled than most of the people there
ChaseTheStars Ian placed 4th/10 in the *non-compact gun division* , so I expect the others in his division had "normal-sized" guns.
I think that Ian incapacitated them with large amounts of whiskey.
I'm pretty sure I could have done better or at least as well with my Colt Walker. Of course, I'm not putting it into an ankle holster for a backup, but you're not stuffing that thing in your sock either.
Automatically ejecting, manual repeating handgun. Really a quiet forgotten design philosophy. ;-)
That's pretty much what some British guns are right now. Pretty much the most rapid fire they can get a full caliber AR (If I'm remembering correctly)
Indeed, this style of weapon will stay around for thousands of years though. If a design works, it survives.
And thats why I carry a 70+ year old S&W Revolver. When lives are on the line i will take reliability over capacity any day. O.o

I'd say most of us have seen at least one Death Wish film, but I don't recall Bronson wearing that particular getup. He was wearing a tan leisure suit when he used this pistol IIRC.
Look on the Death Wish III movie poster my dude, I'm fairly certain that was the look Ian was going for.

Thrawnmulus or they used numerous takes until they got one take without a jam. Lol. Those guns are unreliable at best.

That's why in Deathwish 3 he shows off its gas settings and his hand-loaded ammo.
That the ammo is expensive and time consuming to get is a plot point.
Mr. Kersey also used .475 Magnum.
The stage with the steel targets that you have to hit each before going back and shooting any that weren't knocked down was especially funny to me. Ian using a handgun that has absolutely no chance of NOT knocking down the target on a hit, and smacking the back of the slide after each shot was comedic.

I love how Ian does not care about winning at all in these different matches. He is trying to see how these (mostly historical) or some very different weapons perform under timed simulated courses of fire. I think it is excellent.
So "mechanically interesting" is Ian's euphemism for "jams every frickin time."

The Wildley NEEDS hot ammo in my experience but when the gas system is set right it's GLORIOUS to shoot.

My friend I have one of those and you have to adjust the gas system depending the grains of the ammo otherwise it will jams
IF you did adjust the gas than is the soft flat ammo because that happens to me Every time I shoots soft flat ammo

The leather jacket and well worn jeans make a perfect 80s TV police detective costume, which suits the gun very well.

I owned one a few years ago. It was accurate, very powerful, impressive to show off and just beautiful. Every time I cleaned it I would always end up with cuts on my hands from the sharp edges. And was the most unreliable handgun I ever owned. I was able to empty one full magazine without a failure in 3 years. And the ammo was expensive and hard to find at times. But its company literature stated the gun was made for '' Hunting, Collecting and Target Shooting. '' Its really just a novelty gun. But very cool.

Also, I think the best use for the pistol is as a prop in a sci-fi movie as a directed energy weapon. YMMV.
Damn you Ian! You got me hooked on unique gun mechanics and the backstories of their development. And two years later there's still no close-up video on the Wildey! I'm sure that the window of opportunity to have one in your hands is small and rare. I just really like the 'Gunsmithing Dare' aspect of auto mags. And the different approaches people take to try and handle these huge cartridges.

I really enjoyed this one. The camaraderie with match manager and the spectators was especially fun. "Do you want to re-enagage any of them?" lol.

Used to be. "major power factor". Unfortunately, it mostly acted as a handicap on the majority of shooters to keep the 1911 fanboys in the matches by ignoring modern ballistics and magazine capacity of most firearms. It's fallen out of favor for a reason. Those kind of things end up being less about shooting well and more about gameness. i.e. can I do the math on how many hits is required on all targets with major, vs how many hits on minor, then deduct mag change times and buy the gun which comes out ahead this year? - And hope that the stage designers don't slightly favor the category of gun I didn't buy. It becomes pay to win, but with a couple steps in between. The guy who can afford to buy or customize his whole setup every year can stay at the top.
They were for a while. It was the dominant IPSC/uspsa open caliber for a while. once they allowed "9mm Major" into the same category, it fell out of favor.
I had one in the 80s used full jacket it ran pretty good.

He stated that it might be the soft points, I see no reason to argue. My original point was that it was very impressive that he beat 6 people while having to literally strip the mag out to clear the gun several times, and rerack/hammer on the back of the slide even more. I still think it's a cool gun!
I don't think that thing ever cycled properly and Ian still placed fourth. Good job.

You should get your hands on a AMT automag. They made .50ae , 30 carbine, 45 win mag and 22mag. Maybe some others too. Defiantly a forgotten weapon. I had the .22mag and the crosman auto air2 bb gun look alike. I think the bigger calibers are rare but the .22 is easy to find. Also the automag was about as reliable as that survival pistol lol.
Honestly, the Automag is not that interesting, it's just an up scaled 1911.
Bruce Lortz yeah mine was really accurate too. The reliability of mine really wasn't bad enough to make it not fun but I'd say at best I'd have a malfunction of some type like 1 in 50 rds at best. I never tried to correct any issues with it I'm sure it could have been fixed.
I have an AMT Automag II in 22 WMR which is a one or two shot kind of gun, so I never shot it. I have a letter from the factory I got with the gun saying it won't run with CCI or Federal but will with Winchester. I have yet to try standard Winchester 22 WMR but tried some that where slightly heavier. Unfortunately that did not work. One of these days I will get it running. It would be a fun small game gun I think,
Garrett Evans yeah it may be good with Winchester, I bought 2 bricks of Winchester when I bought mine. it was not perfect by any means but I was able to get through whole mags without constant failure. That was the only ammo I ever tried in it. Usually it would fail to feed when it did fail.

I would love to see something like an AMT chambered in 440 Corbon. The weapon itself may not be forgotten, but the cartridge is.
