Never played these, but I'm a big Etrian Odyssey fan, and I've played some other classic dungeon crawlers like this. I may have to pick this one up!
As a big fan of the Wizardry, Bard’s Tale; and Might & Magic series growing up I loved Class of Heroes and am excited to see it come back.
My only issue with a lot of these Japanese revivals of j traditional Western RPG’s is they could add voice lines for my party members so the game feels less mechanical and lonely.
I love just relaxing with an old school dungeon crawler that doesn't go overboard and try to make things way too complicated. I passed on the PSP, but these look like a good time.

Class Of Heroes 1 and 2 were made by the same dev team who made Wizardry: Labyrinth Of Lost Souls, by the way! I also recommend The Dark Spire on Nintendo DS, and I also recommend Elminage: Original and Elminage: Gothic on Windows PC!
If you liked Class of Heroes then you will definitely enjoy those as well. Highly recommended.
I recommend you Operation Abyss and it's sequel, they are the best of the genre i've played so far, check them out. Actually my brother says that Undernauts is even better but i haven't played, it's from the same team (Experience), they are very good at these games (except stranger of sword city, avoid that one lol).
@@Re-PhantomZero I love Stranger of Sword City, it's one of my favorite dungeon crawling RPGs next to Wizardry and Elminage. I find it is easily the best one of all of Exp Inc's games.
This is actually the game i'm most hyped for 2024 i'm not kidding. this was my first first-person dungeon crawler, i played the first on PSP and i loved it.
I would love if people would support the game so we can get CoH3, we need more first-person dungeon crawlers, lets go 👍

Old school dungeon crawlers like this can have blisteringly brutal difficulty, but they also definitely have a special charm. I've only played a handful of them (never these ones, though it does pique my interest!), but they're always fun as long as you're prepared for the difficulty.
It looks like these have an auto-map feature, which takes away a lot of potential frustration. Though I still have some of my ancient hand-drawn maps from the 90s floating around for some of the games I played then.
This was a pleasant surprise! I only managed to play the first Class of Heroes game on the PSP back in the day. Can't wait to get back into these gems again.
The race/alignment mechanics on top of the usual class decisions has my interest. Helps it stand out among videogame RPGs. Might have to keep an eye on this after catching up on my gaming library.
I still have both lol I just happened to be in GameStop when they were stocking them, just like when Chulip first came out.

Yeah, even the class system is straight-up lifted from Wizardry. I wonder if it's actually the same devs? The later games on the Wizardry series (the non-numbered ones) are actually Japanese-developed and have a markedly more anime design, such as Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land for PS2.
Quite on the contrary, at least when it comes to dungeon crawlers, IMO. If it looks cute, the names are funny and the lines are witty, then the game will surely KICK YOUR SORRY ASS hahaha

I'm a fan of Wizardry, Might and Magic and Elminage games so these games are right up my alley.

Considering I love first-person dungeon crawlers where I can make my own characters, this is really up my alley. I picked up Stranger of Sword City a few years ago, but I really hated how the art was so inconsistent between player-made characters. One reason why Class of Heroes appeals to me is how all the drawings all make it seem like these characters all live in the same world.
I did just get Etrian Odyssey Collection for Switch for my birthday and I'm still not done with those yet! XD
As an Etrian Odyssey fan, this definitely piques my interest. What makes me sad is that it comes out literally the day after SaGa: Emerald Beyond comes out. I will DEFINITELY get it when I get the chance.

PQube sent me review codes of these on PS5 as beat the 2nd game, still working through the first game but almost done. Should have my review up sometime this week. The 1st game I find is a bit rough to get through, but the 2nd is such a massive improvement and really addictive once you get going. Also there were some dialogue and quests that made me burst out laughing

I played the first one back in the day and I liked it a lot but the random dungeons wore me down and I usually had a playthrough of an Etrian Odyssey game I'd be working on. I could never find the 2nd one either. Thanks for bringing it up, I'm super interested in it.

Playing the first one, quite hard to get used to at first but once I got the ball rolling I haven't put it down.
Got the physical copy preordered since last year I missed my chance to own these back in the day
I played both of these games on psp and enjoyed my time with them, I didn't get a chance to play the post game of either games but wanna get the chance to sometime, tho the fact there's an easy mode on the 1st game sounds nice so I can sorta breeze through it. Still I'm really happy to see these games come back and I really hope if it can do well to get the 3rd game that had been missing in the west

I played 2G on the PS3 waaaay back in the day, and it didnt really grab me, but ive definitely gotten more into dungeon crawlers since then so this collection is a good reason to give these games another shot.
The last dungeon crawler I played was Dungeon Traveler 2 😂

I still own these games digitally on my Vita and PSP (1) and PS3 (2G) respectively. From what I remember, 2 plays better than 1 in the beginning, but then, there is a huge, unbalanced difficulty spike in 2 the likes of SaGa Frontier Bad in at least one early dungeon map (I.e. the monsters are suddenly super hard) once you get to a certain point in the story that really annoyed me. I kind of liked both, but I preferred 1’s portability.
I don’t know if 1 or 2 is still cheap on the Vita or PS3 store, despite Sony’s current efforts to make buying anything on there nigh impossible, so I guess buying the Switch version or others is the far more practical option for new people. (Plus, I’m hoping that PQube has re-localized 2’s translation - if so, hopefully, it is is less Working Design-ish - the guys who ran that company localized 2/2G under another company entity - I didn’t hate it, but its goofiness and eccentricity may grate by modern standards.). I may buy the Switch 1&2 bundle someday to show my support.

I love dungeon crawlers, and I loved Working Designs so I tried the 1st or 2nd game in the series. And it was DIFFICULT! But I’d love to give them another try.

This is my favorite genre of games, and I never got to play COH2, so I'm happy these are getting a new release. Maybe this can lead to a potential release of the 3rd game!

They're both very similar, though I would say that this series is a tad bit harder

Played a little of it on my Vita and didn't quite grasp the 'intended' way to play so found it a little insufferably tough so I didn't get far in it. I've played some Etrian Odyssey so I'm more familiar with this style of RPG and looking forward to it in the not too distant future.
I haven't been fully able to get into one of these old first person dungeon crawlers yet despite trying out a bunch like Bard's Tale Trilogy and several Etrian Odyssey games and Persona Q.
So I don't know if I'd drop...come to think they don't show the price for these at all for pre-ordering, so I don't even know if it's gonna be stupidly overpriced like the EO 1-3 collection or not.

I’ve literally never heard of these games until now. And part of me wants to play it since I enjoy dungeon crawlers. But part of me doesn’t because I don’t like things that are difficult. So what should I do?
I never played the first one, but I like the idea of the random dungeons and choosing difficulty. I thought the second was a bit easy and there was some glitch on the PSP version. Still, I did enjoy the second game. I didn't know they put it on Ps3. Now if they'll just give me a Steam release of Dungeon Travelers 2!
Okay! So as I think of dungeon crawlers, Labyrinth of Touhou 2! It's on steam now and man! It's good! I mean, it's different from the normal, but once you dig in, it's very rewarding in so many ways. If you put it on hard mode, be prepared to hate life, because you have to fight bosses on a specific level. This means that you have to get the right team for each boss. How you explore dungeons has such a different graphic style than the usual which just draws me in as well.

This is brilliant! I love the Wizardry series in particular, and this seems almost like a spiritual successor. I was even getting to the point where I was downloading and playing older games in the series because it didn't seem like anyone was making anything like it. Awesome stuff David!

Never played but I dropped out of Etrian Odyssey quick when I was in middle school. I fear that these games are too hard. I do like the sound of this though but I’m worried lol

I have beaten both 1 and 2. the first one is arcaic and shallow, the second is better but still mediocre, and both are mechanically busted and endlessly save scummable due to save anywhere.
I love the artstyle and vibes, but as far as RPGs go you aren't missing anything of note by skipping them.

Thanks for the info on this set of games, Davidvinc. I am a fan of the old school dungeon crawler style, and I am glad jRPGs have kept the style alive. Never heard of these. You mentioned that the version of the second game getting ported to the new gen systems. If I am able to get my hands on the physical edition before it disappears, I will certainly purchase it.
