- Welcome back to sketchup 101. Today is a great beginner/intermediate build. If you've never used sketchup before..here's a good place to start.
If you have any questions, leave a comment and I'll do my best to keep up with them, and don't forget to check out the actual build video for the workbench: czcams.com/users/edit?o=U&vide...

This is a great tutorial! I decided to try modeling a dining table on SketchUp this week after listening to your podcast, and now I'm in love with the idea of tweaking designs virtually before ever starting the build. Awesome tool.
Wow, this was a fantastic tutorial Mike - quite entertaining as well! I had absolutely had no experience with Sketchup, but after watching this and fumbling around for a few hours I was able to sketch up the design for my 13yr old son's desk we're gonna build together. Thank you so much for helping me learn a new skill!
Thanks for this Mike! Planning a garage workshop and this really helped me with designing the workbench and rolling tables I want in there. Can't want for more!
This was a great video Mike. I’ve been doing all my plans on paper, drafting style, for years. Thanks to you I’m going to transition to Sketchup. Thanks a bunch
Thank you. I watched a slower tutorial first and then I watched yours and it just clicked. I appreciate your tutorial style.
Really great job. you go fast, but are so clear that it is easy to pause and unpause to complete this even with no experience. Also you are the only one doing this on a Mac that I have seen and it is a big deal in terms of compatibility.
Thank you so much for doing this video!!! I didn't know where to start with Sketchup, and was just kind of winging it when it came to projects. This is awesome and I love you for taking the time to do this!!!
No doubt!! totally know how you feel. Glad I could help
Great vid. I'm getting back into SketchUp after tooooo many years away from it. You are helping me join the dots on so many mental planning and thinking processes. One of these with an occasional project would be fabulous. Thanks heaps.
Sweet! Thanks Bill
Brilliant. You can own this. Been looking for digestible tutorials forever.
Awesome!! I plan on doing more for sure!
I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great czcams.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.
Thanks for posting. This was a great video for me as starting point to decide if I want to use a application like this for creating new projects.
Looks great, Mike! You're going to love how much larger it is than your other one.
as a beginner user of Sketchup, your tips have been very helpful!! Thank you
thanks for the fast paced knowledge packed tutorial! I learned some new tricks! selecting from right to left vs left to right is a game changer!
Well I've tried sketch up a few times and gave up every single time. But after this video I was almost able to complete this build. I made a few mistakes along the way but now have a better understanding of it so thank you. For sharing.
8 seconds into this video, and I'm sold!
Love the video and actually made the sketch up right along with you. For the most part I followed your directions. Now I need to learn how to do a parts list.
thank you!!!!! i have been staring at my sketchup, lost for weeks just trying to figure out how to start! very helpful
Awesome! Glad I could help
Great job - save yourself a step by holding alt/option to copy and move at the same time. It’s a common function with Mac apps. Option + drag makes a duplicate.
Thanks for all your great shares - keep up the great work.
Excellent video. Very helpful where others make things very complex.
This is the best I've seen!!!
Nice tutorial! I didn't know about the selection, so thanks for that tip! Another quick tip is that you can use the move tool to copy an object, that way you can copy and position it correctly at the same time, saving a step. You do it by tapping the option key on the mac (or control on win/linux pc) while moving the piece.
For the top, you can "copymove" the first 2x4 to the other end and fill in the rest by typing a slash and a number, like /10, that will distribute 9 more 2x4s between the first and the last copy. But that works if you did the math, first of course, so you know how many 2x4s you'll need in advance.
If you don't, like in your case, you can just copymove it right next to the first one and type star and a number, like *10, and that will copy 10 2x4s right next to each other.
Cheers!
I just subscribed your channel because this awesome tutorial and the free plan. Thank you!
When you're making the table top, instead of continually copy and pasting the 2x4s you could have used the Move tool, hold Option when you move it to make a copy, after you start moving type "1.5 10x " this will move it over 1.5" (so it lines up directly beside the original one) and then 10x will make 10 copies each 1.5" further along the same axis.
Thanks for the great info Mike. Been teaching myself sketchup for a while and I just learned more in the past few minutes than in the past couple years. Just found out recently that free sketchup is now all online but I still sometimes use the old 2017 version because I can't find all the tools that were in the desktop version. I can also get very limited use of the online version on a mobile device but as I said, it's very limited. Maybe someday you can address that once you master it. I'll see what I can learn at this end
Great stuff! Good place to start. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial! I was dreading getting the learning curve with this until I saw this video. Now I'm ready to go. Thanks!
This is an incredible worth for money [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. I have been looking for something like this for quite a while now. I'm happy there are opportunities like this out there. This woodwork plan made a clear presentation with regards to building sheds. Much thanks to you.?
Awesome video, got me far enough to design my first desk. Thank you!
just found this sketchup series, exactly what i needed, been using Skillshare to take a few classes but this is more specific. Much thanks from a fellow okie. :)
Right on! Thanks Connor
These legs are a very good idea! Most workbenches you can only make if you already have a workbench to work on. But this is just a case of sawing planks to correct lengths. Simple but ingenious!
Very cool! I look forward to the cut list extension piece...
Ive used sketch up since high school but its a good refresher and enjoy another point of view
Sweet! Thanks Anthony
Been wanting to start using sketchup for a while now but didn’t know where to start. Very well done and look forward to part two with the cut list. Keep it up!
Sweet! I'm learning it now, should have it down for the next vid
Ditto. I’m a new subscriber for your second channel. Already was subscribed to your first channel. I’m looking forward to learning SketchUp, but I need to get a laptop first. It won’t work on my iPad.
Two key tips to Sketchup. Make components of everything discrete asap. Zoom in if you are struggling to draw/connect etc
Modern Builds I'm looking for the cut list too.

This is just my opinion, but you should make a this a video series for all your projects. I have tried to use sketch up a few time but had no idea what I was doing, and ended up frustrated. Really great video, I think your gonna get a lot of requests for these videos! Keep it up man.
As long as there's something new to learn in the modeling process, I'll keep doing tutorials
Beautiful tutorial! Thank you!
Thanks mate! This is very helpful ~~
ayyyy I didnt know you had a second channel. I just started messing around with sketchup this week. this was very helpful. thanks
Sweet! glad I could help
Excellent video!
Great video tutorial!!
Great explanation. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the help I was actually just starting to learn sketch up !!!!
perfect timing!
This is super helpful! Thanks a lot!
just start on sketchup, great help. thanks.
Solid tutorial!
Btw, there is a command to clear all the reference lines, so no need to delete them individually or explode everything.
Fantastic... Thanks Mike!
Well done. New user. You really helped me.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thank you so much this video will help out a lot once again thank you Mike
No Problem! Glad I could help!
Top menu>View>toolbars>select large tool set. for windows users to get the side bar tools
does it need to be sketchp pro? im using the sketchup app browser.
Thanks for the tip but I don't have a top menu. All I have up top is open model preference and saved.
hey ,if anyone else wants to discover quick and easy woodworking projects try Jadonite Wood Blueprints Buddy (just google it ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.
@Mike From Modern Builds I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else wants to discover house furniture plans try Jadonite Wood Blueprints Buddy (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my mate got great results with it.
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to learn about make money from woodworking try Bablim Woodwork Cash Booster (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my colleague got excellent results with it.
@rodney g
Great video! Was a bit fast for me to follow but would love to seem more of these.
cool to hear! I'll slow down a little on the next one
Thank you for the tutorial!!!
cool vid! thanks for showing this sketchup video :D
No problem, glad it helped
very helpful, thank you.
When are you making the cut list video?
Great video. Both the sketchup and table build. However, were is the video to detail how to get your cut sheet? That's what you need most when going from design to actual build.
great tutorial. thanks.
great work
Well done.
great tutorial :). triple-click is very helpful
Super useful! Thanks a lot
Great video! I've been wanting to start learning this program. I am not sure how to download it though. Is the free version only an online thing now? That wouldn't bother me so much but I couldn't see the same options you have in this video on my end.
Thanks for all your videos on both your channels! I'm a big fan!
google sketchup make 2017. the free version for 2018 is web based, but I used the 2017 version that's downloadable
Good video.
I need to sit down and work through more of these. Sketchup is my downfall in woodworking. And now that some people are moving from sketchup to fushion, it’s hard to know which to focus on
If you know what you want to make and you just need to get a model, sketch up would work. But if you want to iterate and change dimension and play with sizes, Fusion would be a lot easier. It does have a higher learning curve but its much more powerful.
I hear you man! The way I look at it, sketcher has a lower barrier to entry. That’s why I’m learning it. Once I get good at this, I can feel more comfortable moving onto learning fusion
Totally. I'm not knocking it and it is really fast. I was trying to figure out if I could get it made in Fusion in under 15 minutes like you did. I think it would be a challenge and you were talking us through it.
Mike, I'm getting started using the browser version of sketchup. I've been following along trying to teach myself this. I get to the step around 4:55. The Push Pull Tool will only let me pull. It won't let me make an indention/offset/dado or whatever you'd like to call it. Am I missing something? Please help.
Just can't give her up.. Great idea
How do you print out each component with its demension (just numbers, not the actual size) once you're done with the final model? This would help me to cut the woods. I am using Sketchup pro 2018.
Would you say sketchup is better suited for woodworking? I've been using fusion 360 but might consider switching over if there are more built in functions for woodworking sort of things.
Thanks to you my dear
sweet video
does the sofware provide a print postion with all parts with it sizes? reference for cutting the pieces?
After watching your EXCELLENT video (2X4 workbench) I liked it so much, but, wanted a shorter version. I looked up Sketchup only to find Google had sold it and the new owner is no longer offering a free version. Do you have any other software suggestions?
Super helpfull. I think im going to start using sketchup now. Just needed a teacher hahahha
Awesome!
this is a pretty good tutorial. but you skip a lot of short cuts, for example to get rid of your reference lines can click the edit menu and select delete guides. also for th legs there are programs or"extensions" you can add to streamline that. i have a mirror tool what will do those steps in a couple of clicks. good video tho. love listening to your modern maker podcast
Am I the only one who slowed this down to 75% to make this watchable? :) Great video but this guy is intense!
The answer is...SUGAR!
I had no problem following along
I hear ya. Guy going so fast, if you are a beginner, you would have to pause it. One thing that gets me on sketchup is how different the windows version is. You would think the front end of the program would look and run the same. But it's not, and all these vids out here are using apple. Not an apple fan, so tutorials are ok, but finding the buttons sometimes is a challenge.
Yeah, this kid needs to slow down before he crashes. I wonder if he is on meth in all his videos.
No, I typically speed up videos to at least 1.5x. Including this one.
Thanks this help a lot. Is it 1.25 or 1.5 for legs?
thank you
Great video! But I missed the one thing I went looking for a video on Sketchup for... how did you zoom in and out??
*TopFineWoodworking. Com* , is a very comprehensive woodworking book! It breaks every little thing down, utilizing words, drawings, real pictures, and different diagrams. It`s unbelievably informative and helps me feel like I could help my sibling while we make our furniture together.?
It's good to see the woodprix has new Instructions to save my money and energy to build it.
This is IT! Thanks
Great video! Was this the first time modeling it? Looked like it came together pretty smooth.
Thanks! Not the first one, I had made a rough model during the planning and design phase
Hammer and Neil I have been watching videos like these just to learn how makers view their digital workflow.
I don't really like these sketchup stuff my dad made me watch these stuff though and my brother picked this video as one of them
>:[
And not much subs
What version of Sketchup is this? I'm completely brand new to Sketchup and have played around a little with the basic free version - seems incredibly cumbersome and tedious. Just one difficulty is there seems to be no way to even scale a drawing - it seems to want to work in something like whole house size. I just want to design some small projects for now. To begin I thought I'd keep it simple by designing a pair of sawhorses, but I can't scale it down to something like 36-in. for a width. I just discovered that there is a so-called "Shop" version but apparently it's not free. Is this what I need?
what are the specifications your laptop in order to run sketchup?
You don't need to explode a component to make it editable. In fact, it's often not a good idea, since it could cause the content to merge with anything it's adjacent to that's not isolated in its own group or component. Instead just double-click the component and you can edit the contents. Click outside to exit the component, and prevent accidental further editing. All this is the same for groups as well.
Liked soon as I saw the Denog.
I was wondering if you can show us a tutorial on behalf of making the model you create on Sketchup 3d like, and converting it to life like image.
Question. How do you then print out the dimensions here for when you actually come to make this in real life?
I want to ask you if you could help me with a small question I have on SketchUp if I want to change the measurement from inches to cm how do I have to do this
When I click one of the legs to make it a component, it selects multiple legs. How do I disconnect those pieces from each other? Not sure what I did wrong but there doesn't seem to be a way to keep the legs independent from one another.
Is there a way to extract all the dimensions for all the pieces as a list? Many thanks
Thanks for the sketch up tutorial. I'm horrible with it!
Haha, just takes a little practice
Yeah a lot of practise
*practice
And lol
Did the bottle next to the computer contribute to typing issue?
@ 2:37 "im gonna tripple click it", if i tripple click it selects everything thats connected to that part?, so the whole table...
How did you change the dimensions of it?
I know this video is older but where exactly are you typing the numbers like the measurements so the program makes it in scale for you? I don’t see where your typed it, example when you typed the 72 inches for the length of the table I might have missed it everytime but that confuses me
Not sure why I’m watching this when I have 13 years Sketchup experience 😂😂
Never know what silly simple trick you might have somehow missed, right?
❤️
You can hold the middle mouse button in and drag to orbit quickly.
Good I like it 🙏🙏🤝👉🔔❤️❤️😁😁💕💕thanks
helpful...
Were can I get sketch up software for woodworking for a beginners ?
Can I download the same software which you are using
@mike would you be able to add some text in the video each time you say "inches" that gives the equivalent in centimeters please ?
