Warrior vs Bauer Goalie Chest Protector and Pad Review

- In this week’s video I put the Warrior G5+ chest protector and GT2pro pads head to head with the Bauer Elite chest protector and 3x pads. There were pros and cons to both - knee stacks, mobility in the chest protector, protection, etc. But there was one clear winner.
Let me know if you’ve ever used any of this gear and what you like about it and what could be better.
HERE'S where you go to download that free mobility program that gives you a 2-4" wider butterfly flare in the next two weeks:

Every 2-3 years I give bauer a try. They do a great job of sucking you in but I’ve never really liked them enough to actually switch. I think it’s great to test the waters from time to time so you know what like and don’t like but sometimes that ole reliable is the way to go!
... so what you're saying is you're a two-timer sometimes as well - - ha ha. Looking forward to checking out your new "What's in my bag video" too!
@@goalietraining haha I make sure to keep it on the hush hush. But thanks! Got a few new pieces of gear to show off before the new year.
I love you , you helped me so much with my equipement choices and training as à starter goalie thank you for your vidéos
Amazing - - thank you so much, it's my pleasure to help. Excited for you!
The garage!!! I love it. I'm totally stealing that phrase 😉 you rock!!
Love to see those pucks parked in the garage 😉
@@goalietraining gotta get the 3 car garage going 😉
Warrior is so underrated. Haven’t tried True, but I’ve worn CCM axis Pro and Bauer Hyperlites and Warrior beats them both easily IMO.
Yeah - Warrior has it goin' on. Would be interested to try Trues at some point
Love me my G4's. Sweet review!
I am going to seriously check out those G6s when they come out. Glad you liked the review.
I loved my warrior RGT pads but just changed to a Bauer 3X and love them
They are nice and light aren't they?
As a beginner goalie, I went for Bauer GSX for the chest protector, and I'm happy with it, fits perfectly. The choice was purely about price (it's the cheapest you can find), I didn't think the ultra fancy ones are worht the up charge. But for the pads though, I went for the Warriors G5, decided it was worth investing a bit on that part, and I love them.
The Bauer chesty is nice and light and delivers great mobility doesn't it? Glad you like those G5s ... I am excited to see what the new G6s look like next season.
@@goalietraining Yes, I basically don't feel it while skating. I can drink from my bottle no problem, but I'm tall (1m87) and have long arms ;-)
I switched from RBK Premier 3s to used Bauer Ultrasonic pads. These pads are freekin ridiculous! They are soooo fast on the lateral push and I haven't been beaten 5 hole all year. Which is a whole new experience for me lol 😆
That is awesome - I bet they are so much lighter compared to your RBKs.
I’ve also been a little on the fence about my Bauer chesty for the exact same reason you mentioned, except for the rebounds, I haven’t really had that issue yet. I was a little worried you’d love the pads and I’d have to take my Brian’s gloves back so I could get the Bauer ones and the matching pads. Glad I get to stick with Brian’s lol
ha ha - - You are safe for now... I was really surprised I didn't like the pads more. Glad you get to stick with those Brian's too - - they are siiiiick!
We all get comfortable with what we use and how it performs for us. Kudos for trying new gear and being open minded to try new things. Bauer isn’t for everyone and most will say negative comments and that’s fine. You could get two straps and connect them to the bottom inner strap to connect them further to your shin area to get that swaddled feeling. Jamie Senn used those additional straps to get the connection he wanted. Also the 3X pads are more of a synthetic leather so the sliding won’t be out of this world compared to other brands, aka you get what you pay for.
Thanks for your input - I agree with you pads are a lot like shoes - we can be at the same level, get the same shoes and one of us loves them and the other one can’t get comfortable. I sure did like how light they were and I really expected to LOVE these pads. I think you are right that the extra strap would probably help with the knee cradle issue, but I also feel like - ‘I have to pay more money to get my pads to fit?’ Gear is always fun, always fun to see what companies do differently and how it feels.
@@goalietraining I have two small Bauer straps (A&R has them too for 5.99 USD) you can have for free. I think you can also dial in that first strap by taking some slack out of the straps where they hook on the inside leg channel unless you already did that. But like you said your new shoes only looked good on the rack or in the box.
@@cw2lido Thanks so much for the offer - that is so kind of you. I am going to stick with my Warrior and CCM's for now because they both feel so good without needing extra straps, etc that I don't really feel the drive to make the Bauer's work. Nothing against Bauer, these pads just aren't for me :)
Goalie gear is obviously down to preferences. But yeah. I get your problems with the Bauer Elite. The sternum plate has been changed on the vapor series (at least on the hyperlite) so it dampens pucks instead. the hyperlite also has great mobility. Costs a bit though. But if you can't find a senior model that fits I would stick with the warrior. Intermediate gear is not made to face adult shooters. I play in the 3s pads and i love them. I'd probably have the same issues as you if they didn't come with the professor strap that just absolutely locks the knee in without feeling uncomfortable. I also came from pro laces and had the same issue. I actually broke one by stepping on it several times during my first and second skate with them. Then I realized the bauer toe ties are made so you can adjust them yourself. I just cut them to the same length of the pro laces and made a new knot. What i like about them vs the pro laces is that you can buy a few yards of high quality bungee cord for a fraction of the cost of a pair of pro laces and replace whenever one gets cut or starts losing its flex. Also my experience is that the warrior knee pads are too bulky to fit in the bauer knee cradle. but in the end the gear is personal and it all comes down to how you feel in it.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with the gear, that is great! I totally agree and I tried to make it clear in the video that I wasn't saying the gear was 'bad', it just wasn't for me. Great points how how personal a decision it is and I think you might be bang on that the Warrior knee pads are too big for the Bauer knee cradle.
Would love to see you try Brians Optik X2 or Gnetik. Warrior and Brians are the brands my daughter switches back and forth on
I would be keen to try Brians as well. When I got my very first set of Warriors it was down to them and a set of Brians. I really like the Brians gloves too.
Did you try the professor strap to keep from falling off the knee cradle? Mine would fall off occasionally and I threw the professor strap back on and it fixed the problem.
Yeah, but then I didn't like the way it felt behind my knee, like if I got it tight enough my knee felt good, then I felt it across the back of my knee. I am sort of like the Princess and the Pea in that regard - - ha ha
I have Bauer pads, and I think it’s common to come off the knee cradle IF you strap to the calf area the way you would in warriors. I switched to strapping across the back of the knee and problem solved. That switch for me was worth it, I couldn’t slide in my warrior GTs at all. Sad to hear about the lack of protection in the Elite. I was looking at it to replace my rg5 chest..too stiff, weird shape….small torso, long arms,
Makes sense. Thank you.
You might want to try a Vaughn SLR4 chest protector. I took one for a test drive and it delivered great protection... but felt less boxy than my Warrior for sure. I still like the Warrior, but I'm considering a switch.
Great to see comparison videos. Were the pads not strapped tight enough? Weird that you fall off the knee stacks. Quick question, do you still love the Can Ice? How is it holding up? 6 month review?
Yeah, they were tight enough - - or at least I would not want them any tighter. It was weird. I do still love the Can Ice - - good idea for a updated review - - stay tuned!
@@goalietraining Thanks Maria. Always enjoy your POV.
I have that knee cradle problem with my Bauers also... Only an issue when the ice starts getting rough.. I found the straps just had too much stretch
I think you raise a good point - could be that the straps were just a bit too elastic-y.
I have a Warrior ritual G2 chest protector and the same thing happens to me too. When I take a puck to the chest area it drops straight down between my knees and the back of my pads.
I LOVE that!
I had a Bauer Elite Senior … it was comfortable and good mobility, however it did not offer enough protection. I now have a Brian’s Optik 1 … great protection and arm movement better than anything else’s I tried before I bought it. I had all Bauer gear and have been moving away from Bauer.
I have heard good things about Brian's chest protectors too. I really like the Brian's gloves when I try them on at the shop.
I have the 3x I do like them There very light a lot better than the G3
So light - that's what I liked the most about them - crazy light!
I have Hyperlite pads and I had the same problem until I ran the strap straight across the knee
I think you are right - I switched the strap to straight across the knee too and that did seem to fix the problem... but then I didn't like how it felt (I'm a bit of a princess that way).
@@goalietraining i will admit i didnt like that there was the knee cradle issue on the bauers and yes the two ways to fix it are a) use the across-the-knee strap method and or b) use a tight professor strap (my preferred method since I can then use the price strapping setup). That said, everything else about the pads are really fantastic. Amazing sliding throughout the entire game, great rebounds, doesn't feel "cheap" like warriors do sometimes. I have heard excellent things about brians but I dont like their gloves, and excellent things about True but they're expensive and the sizing is weird. I would definitely put Warrior over Bauer when comparing budget pads, but I lean towards Bauer when talking about pro pads
@@ma-tn7lz That's one thing I like about gear - - it is so personal and it is all about personal preference. Glad you are having great success with your Bauers - -I would be interested in trying Trues as well, but like you said - gotta save lots of allowance for those.
@@goalietraining I agree that is not my preferred way of doing it but I got used to it pretty quick and love how they perform even better
What about taking sleeves off the bauer to use on the warrior?
I actually thought about that Ed. The Bauer's are velcro'd on whereas the Warrior sleeves are tied on with a lace. I am sure I could get the guy at my hockey shop to make a robo-chesty for me... but I also feel those stingers in particular on the biceps when I wear the Bauer... not sure.
Did the Bauer’s not come with the professor strap? I imagine that would help with keeping your knees from falling off the blocks
Sort of - you can either bring the strap from the knee block straight across behind the knee or angle it down to the calf. I did try putting it straight across the back of the knee which helped me not fall off the knee cradle, but I also didn't like how it felt across the back of my knee.
The 3x do not but it can be purchased.
My hyperlites came with a professor strap, which would definitely help. But I didn't like the way it felt so I just strap the knee strap across
@@thatguy8514 mine came with a professor strap 🧐
@@goalietraining not the elastic from the knee block. There’s 2 tabs in the leg channel just below the knee block that you can add a set of straps to. I guess you have to buy it separately
Check out brown sports for your next chesty! Top notch!
Okay - thanks! I appreciate that.
I paused the video to comment that the Chesty that won was a Brown Hockey Custom Chesty in all forest green. 😀
ohhhhh - - that sounds lovely!
It's really annoying to me that they don't even sell the professor strap with the 3x pads. Like I don't want to have to buy $1500 pads to get a $50 pair of straps 😡 I am in warrior 33+1.5, they're still a bit short in the thigh rise for me but going lundy loop really helped. I think I might look into 32+2 slr3's. I think they have the same knee block attachment and their professor strap is the best.
Yeah - that is weird that you would have to add another strap to make the fit better.
I love my Ccm premier pro chest and I'm not going to change it, and I use a pair of Baurr S190 pads and i like them, I want true L20.2 to be honest hehehe.
The problem with your kneww is how you're strapping it.
Those True pads look very nice. What issue do you see with the strapping?
@goalietraining I had the same problem with my bauer s190 and a friend lend me his 3x and I had the same problem but then I found this video czcams.com/video/a5QlMSyxU4I/video.html
And the problem stopped.
@@aept208 That's awesome - I'm glad you got them all sorted out. Thanks for sharing that.
its slr2 carbons for me all the way, but i got a pair of hyperlites and they are sweeeet. 33+2 vaughn, M hperlite and the bauers sit an inch shorter. I had g5 pads, loved everything about them but hated the smaller knee landing pad, knee felt way to cramped and unbalanced in that thing. v8 carbon chesty all the way.
The first pads I ever had were old used Vaughns - and naturally they were heavy (because they were old) and now I always assume Vaughns are heavy, which is silly, I know. I will have to take a set for a rip one of these days. The factory is about a 5-minute drive from my house.
@@goalietraining the pro carbons are considered to have the best sliding of all the brands, but for some reason I dont find vaughns comfortable. still worth a try though, but I think if youre happy with warrior just stick with them. they are great pads
@@ma-tn7lz I haven't used modern Vaughns - - I started out with a few sets of old used Vaughns. I do like the Warrior and will stick with them, but always fun to test drive other options.
Not sure how you can compare a Bauer intermediate chest protector to a senior warrior +. How about a senior Bauer to senior Warrior. Like you said, even in the warrior intermediate you had before you felt stingers. With your knee falling off the stack, thats why need the strap behind the knee instead of going down to the calf.
Would be happy to do a straight up review - - you can send me a senior small and I am all over it - - ha ha. Unfortunately when I put the strap across the back of my knee (I did try it), in order to get it tight enough to sort of keep me on the stack, then I felt it on the back of my knee and it bugged me. Not saying the pads/chest are no good... just not for me personally.
Try the Vaughn Velocity in adult small in C/A.
Really.... hmmmmmm... what do you think I will love about them?
@@goalietraining
I got them to replace an older unit. I’m 5’5”, similar to you. They have good mobility and great protection.
I 2nd this. I love my Vaughn C/A. I'm 5'5" tall also and the senior small works but next time I will go with an XS to make the fit perfect. It protects very well and gives predictable rebounds. It's not as light as some other brands but it's a tank and I trust my safety to it completely. I also like that I could remove the extra belly pad since I didn't need it. It also integrated well with suspenders.
Garage eh?
Yup... park those pucks in the ol' garage!
So get this and go to the local store and beef it up for 100-150 or so is what you're saying
Do you mean the pads? Yeah, I am not keen on buying an extra strap so my knees stay on the knee cradle.
@@goalietraining meant the chestie. Needed uo chestie helps a lot.
I thinks there are differences pro pads va the regular versions but never felt a shit or bruise on cheap pads so not a fan of spending more than I should for pads.
It’s over😂😭
It's over....
Only way to go is BROWN. Same with knee pads. They’re unreal! Won’t go to anything else.
Awesome - good to know. What other brands have you used in the past and what do you love about the Brown compared to the others?
I’ve tried on several brands but never played in them to compare. The reason I went with Brown is because they’re made for your measurements and once you communicate with them the attention to detail is unreal. Right now I use his knee pads, suspenders, jock and older chest protector. Im in the works for a new one with JB. Give them a try you won’t regret it!
@@notenuf2do If you find what you like - why try anything else right? I am actually getting a Kenesky made to measure in the next few months, so it will be cool to see the difference.
@@goalietraining you’ll have to let me know how that feels and works for you. I’ve never tried them but here good things about Kenesky, kind of like JB. I’m former equipment manager and just getting back into playing net again after taking time off from injury. Love the videos and information! Be nice to chat and pick your thoughts sometime. What’s best way to do this? Thanks!

If you had something else specific you wanted to discuss, you can email help[at]goalietrainingpro.com
The same thing happens to me with the 3Xs when going into my butterfly and my knee would fall off but, it would really only happen when I would do more exaggeration like a big slide.
Glad it wasn't just me :)
The problem is is the pad is to big and you don’t have the top Velcro tight enough or you could also just buy the strap that comes separately from the pads that helps with that problem
@@thiasauchenberg yes, that's what other people said. The pads are definitely not too big for me - my knee lands right in the cradle, I could probably fix the problem by buying a strap to make the new pads work better, but when my Warrior and CCM pads already work great without the need to buy additional straps to make them work... I think the Bauers just aren't the right pads for me... not that they aren't great pads for someone else.
I started to use professor straps and it helped me to get rid of that problem👋🏻
@@tiiapajarinen2079 That's what a few others have said too, but since I don't need to buy any extra straps to make my CCMs or Warriors feel great, that has moved me away from using the Bauers.
